How long do they keep urine specimens?
Date: 1/30/2012
How long after the urine sample was collected I can ask for the split specimen to be retested at an independent lab? I had a pre employment drug, tested positive for marijuana and there is no way I can test positive since I have never used illegal drugs in my life. Of course I wasn’t hired and q month and a half passed from my test. I want to clear my name and maybe file a lawsuit. Do you know for how long they keep the split urine specimen? Thanks.

Marina

AskDocWeb: Some labs keep them for a year but there is no established industry standard so it depends on the lab. A quick phone call to the lab would reveal that. If you want to file a lawsuit then you may want to find an attorney that specializes in employment law. And if you do that be sure to let us know how it turns out. Good luck.

Mucinex DM?
Date: 1/30/2012
Can musinex dm cause u to fail a drug test for meth?

Chris

AskDocWeb: Although Mucinex DM contains dextromethorphan, which has shown up as opiates, it has not shown up as meth.

False positive for alprazolam?
Date: 1/30/2012
Hello. I was recently given a drug test and tested positive for Alprazolam which from my understanding is generic for xanax. I have not taken any xanax and I cannot understand what could be causing this. The only medications I take are Ambien, Celexa, I had a bad virus that turned into an infection and was given amox-clav and valtrex (the doctor was unsure if I had a cold sore that got severaly infected from the original virus and prescribed me that because my entire bottom lip was severly swollen and infected). Other than that I sometimes take benadryl for allergies. Could any of these medications given a false positive for alprazolam?

Dawn

AskDocWeb: Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) would seem to be the most likely explanation as that sometimes shows up as a benzodiazepine on urine drug screens (Alprazolam is a benzodiazepine). This type of false positive can only be ruled out with a confirmation test.

Serax
Date: 1/30/2012
I just tested positive for serax and up until this point I had no idea what serax was. The only thing I have taken is multi symptom allergy relief with tylenol, imodium ad and benyadryl could these mixed together caused me to show up for this serax? I am now facing jail time for this and I need answers and help.

MB

AskDocWeb: Serax (oxazepam) is a benzodiazepine. See the answer for Dawn above.

Another Benadryl false positive?
Date: 1/30/2012
I recently took a random drug screen for my job, and I tested positive for benzodiazepines in my urine. However, I do not take Xanax, the only thing I have taken lately was Vicoden ES, later Lortab, and then Tylox because I had oral surgery and it got infected. The only other thing that I have taken recently was over the counter benadryl sinus. I need to figure out what caused this or I lose my job! Please help me!

Derrick

AskDocWeb: This is the third post in a row about a false positive involving someone taking Benadryl. Please see the answer for Dawn above.

Fighting to get my children back
Date: 2/1/2012
I am a recovering heroin addict fighting to get my children back. My youngest daughter is only 4 months old and CPS took her from me at the hospital. I have been on Suboxone and just recently started a new anti-depressant the generic form of Wellbutrin. I have been clean other than what has been prescribed to me for more than 8 months now however they are telling me that I have failed 2 different tests on January 20 and 23 for cocaine. CPS has already filed an order to take my daughter from me completely and sever my rights. Please help!!

I have NEVER had a problem with cocaine and would NEVER risk losing my daughter forever! I’m at a lose though because they say that a test I took on the 27 of January was clean for all but my Suboxone. I have asked them to retest however they tell me that the tests they give me already have a confirmation test with them. I also take a multi-vitamin w/fiber and dietary supplements for joint support (Glucosamine HCI 1500 mg w/ MSM 1500mg), mind health (Ginkgo Biloba 120mg), sleep (Melatonin 5mg), and a chewable pill for digestive health with some kind of bacteria in it. I do not take my vitamins and supplements everyday like I do my Suboxone and Wellbutrin. Could any of these things cause a false positive for cocaine?

Melissa

AskDocWeb: Sorry Melissa, none of what you list has been reported to cause a false positive for cocaine on urine tests. Have you requested a copy of that confirmation test? Otherwise how do you know for certain that it exists?

Delganex
Date: 2/2/2012
I would like to start delganex. But I am about to get a new job, so my question is if they do a drug test, would it come out positive? If so, how long should I wait to get it off completely out of my system? Please help me.

Lisa

AskDocWeb: Delganex appears to be one of the foreign copycat drugs for Meridia. Counterfeit drugs are not listed in our database. However, if it is some kind of brand name (legal or otherwise) for Meridia (sibutramine hydrochloride) then the longest lasting metabolites may persist for about three and a half days.

Please note that on October 8, 2010, the manufacturer of Meridia announced a voluntary withdrawal of that product from the market in the USA. This action was requested by the FDA following a review of new data about the risk of adverse cardiovascular events.

Suboxone
Date: 2/2/2012
How long does Suboxone show up in urine?

Meg

AskDocWeb: Hi Meg, welcome to the forum. You may have found a lot of conflicting statements about the half-life of Suboxone. That’s because it varies so much from one individual to the next as well as variations in dosage, frequency of use, and time since last used. Using the best case scenario of a single dose taken by a healthy adult, it could show up in urine for up to 3 days after ingestion. However, that is not typical.

One way to estimate how long a drug will be in the body is with a “half-life.” That is the length of time it takes for the body to eliminate half the drug from your system, for Suboxone that can range from 24 to 72 hours. It generally takes 5 half-lives to completely clear a drug from the body. The shortest length of time would be 24 times 5 equals 120 hours or 5 days. The longest time would be 72 times 5 equals 360 hours or 15 days. Since the liver metabolizes Suboxone, any problems with the liver (reduced function) could increase that detection time.

Supplements and testing
Date: 2/2/2012
I have to go for a Norwegian Medical Certificate soon as part of my new employment. This will be sometime in the next few months but I will know in advance. Part of the test will be drug screening, which I’m guessing is a urine sample.

I currently take 2 supplements for my weight training and cardio and would like to know if any of them would create a false positive due to ingredients. Also if it is a possibility, how many days would it take for traces of these to be out of my system before any tests.

I know most of the products are fine but I’m not sure about the geranium. I’ve also read that higher levels of carnitine can be seen as your trying to dilute your urine.

Kris

AskDocWeb: It appears that you may be confusing carnitine with creatine. One of the ways that drug abusers attempted to mask their drug use was to drink copious amounts of fluids, particularly after ingesting a diuretic. That dramatically increases urine production and dilutes samples, which reduces drug concentrations. It also results in very low creatinine levels. Of course that no longer works as SAMHSA now requires creatinine be measured on all urine samples submitted for drug testing. Samples with creatinine levels below 20 mg/dL are not acceptable and reported as diluted, invalid, or substituted depending on the creatinine levels when compared to the urine density (specific gravity). Note that diluted samples may not be intentional as that can occur for reasons other than a conscious effort to subvert a test.

The concern about geranium has to do with 1,3-dimethylamylamine, which is also known as DMAA. That made from geranium stems and is known to sometimes show up as a false positive for amphetamines. A confirmation test would eliminate that kind of false positive but not all employers do a confirmation test. That is something that you will probably want to find out when they do your test.
