E-cig false positive?
Date: 4/6/2012
I tested positive for methamphetamine after using a e-cig. Can you tell me what herb or chemical in it can cause this? Are there any e-cigs out there that won’t test positive for any kind of drug that would cause an issue with probation. I’ve been clean and sober for 2 years and never used meth so the positive test came as a suprise to me.
Billy
AskDocWeb: There seems to be a number of these on the market. If you send us a list of the ingredients in the e-cig that you are using we will check it out.
Faint lines
Date: 4/6/2012
If the at home drug test I took has faint lines on it but they are definitely there is there any way that is positive?
Jesse
AskDocWeb: It may be but you would have to read the instructions that came with the kit to find out. Unless the kit is really cheap it should tell you how to interpret the results.
No, Tramadol is an opioid, not an opiate. Opioids are synthetic products with chemical structures that are significantly different from that of opiates.
False positive for heroin metabolite?
Date: 4/6/2012
I’m applying for a position with a company that does a hair follicle testing. I DO NOT use drugs and my test came back stating that I was positive for the metabolite of heroin. I have migraine headaches and I was in the hospital where they prescribed me hydrocodone tablets for pain and they gave me an IV fluid called toradol. Can this show a false positive on my test? I’m really devastated over this and I’m not sure what to do at this point.
Felicia
AskDocWeb: If you believe that your test result was a false positive then we suggest getting a GC/MS confirmation test. Information in your medical records will follow you around for years so is worth getting cleared up.

Date: 4/6/2012
I dont smoke marijuana or havent even been around anyone that does. But I keep testing positive for it. I’ve had a heart attack in 2009 and I have seven stints in my heart. I also have type 2 diabetes and COPD. Here is a list of all my meds that I have to take daily. Plavix, Aspirin 325 mg. Daliresp, Lisinopril, Isosorb Mono, Centrum Silver vitamins Pravastatin Sodium, Glimepiride, Carvedilol, Bupropion, Gemfiroz, Fursoemide (Lasix), Ranexa, LortaB 500 MG. as needed,ProAir- HFA (Albuterol Sulfate) inhaler, and flaxseed oil 1,000 twice a day. I desperately need to find the cause for this testing positive. Can you help me?
Carrie
AskDocWeb: None of the drugs and supplements that you list have been associated with marijuana false positives however, some people with diabetes have been known to test false positive for marijuana. This was discovered when additional testing was conducted by GC/MS as the results came back negative.

Decavol RDe?
Date: 4/7/2012
First of all thank you for the false positive list but I need to know if decavol rde will cause a false positive for amphetamines opiates or anything else. I’m aware of the positive for steroid use but that is not the concern. I’m under supervision and dont want to go back to prison. I lift weights for stress release and am not some sort of roid head lol please get back to me asap. Thank you so much.
Andrew
AskDocWeb: Aside from the steroid issue for athletes, Decavol Rde? has not been reported to cause any false positives for drugs of abuse.

Date: 4/9/2012
Will any of the ingredients in a tweaker energy shot show up as a positive on a drug screen?
Shelly

False positive urine for THC?
Date: 4/10/2012
My son is on probation and went to do his urine test today at the courthouse. He tested positive for marijuana, but hasnt done it for a while. He was put on effexor for depression and they just recently increased his dosage. He also takes motrin for back pain from his physical work at his job. Would either of these cause a false positive urine for thc? This is a matter of him going to jail for 2 years. Please advise me of the outcome a.s.a.p. Thanks.
Karen
AskDocWeb: We apologize for taking so long to get to your post. Our computer crashed and we had to do some data recovery.
According to a Legal Bulletin from the Lewisburg Prison, PA, in drug testing the prisoners they found that Motrin may show up as a false positive for marijuana on urine drug tests. Whenever there is doubt about a drug test, additional testing is recommended on the original sample by an independent laboratory to confirm or deny the results.
Please Note: If you sent feedback between April 10th and the 15th it did not reach us due to a computer system crash. Please try again.
Hair alcohol test
Date: 4/15/2012
Pro-Air HDA…I have had asthma for years and am currently on probation. If my probation officer asks for a hair alcohol test, will my daily inhalations register a false positive for alcohol since there is ethanol in the inhalations? I know it can do so for a breathalyzer so how about the hair ETG tests?? Thanks,
Wheezy
AskDocWeb: Although we don’t have a specific reference for ProAir that does seem likely, which is another reason to disclose all product you use that contain alcohol at the time of testing. Hair strand testing for alcohol has been shown to produce false positive results: i.e. they have established the presence of EtG above the LOQ (level of quantification) in those who have not consumed alcoholic beverages. About 10% of ETG hair tests for alcohol result in false positives and 10% false negatives. (Source: http://www.familylawweek.co.uk/site.aspx?i=ed71271)
Note that a false positive reading for alcohol on a hair test may also result from using hair treatment products that contain alcohol — or even having champaign or beer poured over your head at a victory celebration.
