UA for alcohol
Date: 4/24/2012
I tested posituve on a UA for alcohol and have not consumed any. I had the results GC MSed and they said it still came back positive for alcohol how is this possible?
Mark
AskDocWeb: The GC/MS test pretty much guarantees that the alcohol was in your system. However it does not explain how it got there. It is possible that you may have consumed alcohol and didn’t realize that it was in your food, drink, or absorbed it through the skin from one of the following:
- balsamic vinegar
- beauty product that contains SD Alcohol 40
- breath drops
- cooking Vanilla (30% alcohol by volume)
- extra sour dough bread
- fake alcohol such as O’doull’s, Near beer, and Fre’ wine products
- hair dye
- mouthwash
- soy sauce
- teriaki sauce
- waterless hand soap. (Proven by recent clinical study)
Other product may also contain alcohol. The only other possibility is that you are not being honest.
I got called in
Date: 4/24/2012
I RECENTLY TOOK A URINE DRUG TEST GC/MS AN TESTED FOR POSTIVE FOR amp/mamp, i had been at my mothers taking care of her for 4 months an i used what she had for what ever ailed me instead of going to the dr, she had broken her hip so i had no time to pack everything, an wasnt working or worried about work till all of a sudden i got called in. what could i have got into?
ANN
AskDocWeb: What you got into has two parts. The first part is a medical problem that depends on what medication your mother was prescribed. The second part is a legal problem that may result from using anyone else’s prescription medication. In most places that is illegal.
Tested positive for methamphetamine
Date: 4/24/2012
I am trying to do some research on these medications. I take 60mg a day of amphetamine/dextroampetamine, along with 40mg of paroxetine hydrochloride, and daily use of flunisolide. I tested positive for methamphetamine. I am a fireman and an emt. I am a single father of two boys. I wouldn’t touch any illegal substance and risk my family and everything I worked for. Was trying to figure out if these would cause the false positive. Figured why not ask the FDA. Any information on this would be great. Thank you.
Justin
AskDocWeb: The medications you list have not been associated with false positives on urine tests for drugs of abuse. However, you might check to make sure that the test that was used makes a distinction between amphetamine and methamphetamine. Some of the quick tests do not make that distinction.
Klonopin
Date: 4/24/2012
I am on three mg of klonopin daily. I recently took a drug test and showed up positive for oxazepam. Can anyone please explain to me how and why this would or could happen?
Anita
AskDocWeb: According to two drug testing laboratories ( Redwood Toxicology Laboratory Inc. and Blue Grass Drug Screen, Inc.), Klonopin may test positive for benzodiazepine. Oxazepam is a benzodiazepine. Some urine drug tests are not accurate enough to tell the difference between Klonopin and benzodiazepine.
False negative
Date: 4/24/2012
I am taking Ritalin and had a UA, and the results came back negative. I have been taking my medication and my Dr. said “the results state that I’m not.” I am wondering why this is happening.
Brandy
AskDocWeb: It is called a false negative. This may occur if the drug is masked by diluted urine (drinking too much liquid), too long a time passed since ingestion, your body metabolizes the drug faster than expected, too low a quantity ingested, or the laboratory’s established threshold limits may be too low. Each of these possibilities has such a low probability that they are typically not considered. However, even if only one percent of the tests turn out false negative results, that means that it is happening to someone – maybe to you.
Imatrex – Imitrex?
Date: 4/25/2012
Can imatrex test positive for anything on a drug screen?
Kristin
AskDocWeb: On urine drug tests, Imitrex may show as a false positive for lyseric Acid diethyland (LSD).
Morphine
Date: 4/25/2012
I am in a sobriety court program and recently has a positive urine screen for 100ng/mg of morphine. I have not taken any illegal drugs ever and had only taken an excedrin migraine and some advil in the two days prior to this. Can either of these cause a false positive test? Just to let you know, I did a test 2 days prior to this one that was clean and the day after that was clean as well, but the one in the middle came out with this trace amount of morphine. Any advice? Thank you.
Kristen
AskDocWeb: We can tell you that neither of your pain medications have caused a false positive for morphine but beyond that would just be speculating. That level is far below the cut-off level for morphine on most tests. For example the US DOD has a cut-off value of 4000 ng/ml for morphine in their drug monitoring program.
Fetanyl patches
Date: 4/25/2012
My mom currently just got prescribed 100mg of fetanyl patches. The directions she has to take is that she have two patches on for 2 days. She currently just went for a test to receive her next prescription and for some reason cocaine popped up in her system. Is there an explanation for this? Thanks for the help.
Ashley
AskDocWeb: Fentanyl has been documented to sometimes show up on urine drug tests as a false positive for LSD but not cocaine. There probably is an explanation for her test result but we don’t know what that is.
Tested positive for meth
Date: 4/26/2012
I tested positive for meth and was wondering if taking sudafed and nyquil could have affected the outcome. It was gc/ms lab test. Thanks for any reply.
Doug
AskDocWeb: No, the GC/MS test eliminates false positives caused by Sudafed and Nyquil.

AskDocWeb: The only med on your list that has been reported to cause problems on urine tests is trazadone, which has shown up as a false positive for amphetamines (Sources: New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services and IT Laboratories, an ISO-certified drug testing laboratory ).
