Subj: Provigil
Date: 8/28/2007
I have been taking Provigil to help me stay awake. I had a RX for it about a year ago. I recently had to take a non-dot return to work screening. Do you think that Provigil will show up?
Cristina
AskDocWeb: There have been no reports that Provigil showed up in a drug screen.
Subj: Going to take a drug test
Date: 8/30/2007
Hello, going to take a drug test tomorrow. I take NO chemical medications, although I have taken stacker 3 without ephedra, and I take burdock root — will either of these cause a false positive? Also, I fast very frequently, out of curiosity, if I was in a period of fasting, would liver and/or kidney excretions be different due to a fasting purge and would that effect a test?
Jen
AskDocWeb: Fasting is not likely to affect the test, nor burdock or the Stacker 3 as long as it doesn’t have the ephedra in it.
Subj: Can’t figure this out
Date: 8/30/2007
I recently had a random drug screen. I am a nurse, and cannot figure this out, nor can my doctor I’ve used for four years. I take Lortab, Flexeril, Lexapro, Xanax, and Lunesta. I also had been taking Nyquil for at least a week at night before this test. I tested positive for darvocet, paid 190.00 to have the urine retested. Of course, it showed up darvocet as well. I have never taken darvocet. And I can’t figure out why dcn showed up and Lortab and Xanax didn’t. I took a Lortab and Xanax the night before the test. Could any meds I take cause this false positive result? I am at risk of losing my license and everything I’ve worked for over the years?
Jackie
AskDocWeb: That is strange, it sounds like you need to talk to a toxicologist.
Subj: Suboxone
Date: 8/31/2007
Suboxone (a relatively new drug). I am on parole in NY, and periodically submit urine for analysis. The method Parole uses is a stick. On several occasions, the final confirmatory line, which is for cocaine, has either been very light, or has taken additional time to indicate negative. This week, the line did not appear, indicating I was positive for cocaine. I know I am clean, and have been for three years. I demanded another stick, which I was given. There was very little urine in the cup to begin with, nonetheless, the test again indicated positive for cocaine. The test was sealed and sent to a lab for confirmation. I do not know the consistency of the stick method, but after seeing it indicate the same results twice, I am very concerned. Questions: Has anyone ever indicated suboxone returning a false positive for cocaine? Also, are these sticks accurate?
James
AskDocWeb: Sorry James, we have no data on the accuracy of the sticks used in your test. Suboxone is an opioid or opiate, which means that it contains or is made from the narcotic opium.
Subj: Takes many medications
Date: 9/4/2007
My father was recently placed in a correctional facility for DUI, and had been doing good out there. He was due to be released in about a week, but was tested yesterday morning for drugs and tested positive for methamphetamine. He doesn’t do drugs and never would have risked getting into trouble like this. They hauled him down to county jail and put him into solitair and are saying that they may take his good time away and add 20 some more days. My father takes many medications, some of which include prednisone and albuterol. My brother is trying to say that those two together may have done it. The thing that I can’t figure out is why he tested negative when he went in to begin his time a couple weeks ago but now is testing positive. Before he went in, with his albuterol he only took it as needed but the correctional facilities nurse makes him take it so many times a day. I don’t think he took his prednisone as often as the past couple weeks either. He has tried to request that they give him a blood test to prove to them he hasn’t done drugs, but they said they can’t because it’s too much money wasted. If he took a blood test would it show positive too? But my main question is WHY is he testing positive for anything when he’s done nothing? Could his medicine do it?
Leslie
AskDocWeb: Prednisone is not on the list for causing a false positive. Several people have asked about albuterol and we’re beginning to wonder about that inhaler. To rule out the possibility of a false positive he may be able to get a GC/MS confirmation test if he agrees to pay for it.
Subj: Tested positive for cocaine
Date: 9/5/2007
I tested positive for cocaine at my court ordered rehab… I currently take lortab, percocet, amoxycillan, ambien, lexapro, zyrtec, ibuprofen and I had a cortisone injection recently as I have a broken back. I know the amox will cause a false, but would any combo of the others cause one and if I have a gc/ms test done would it cause a false on that one as well? I have no idea if I have kidney or liver problems but I did drink alot of alcohol in the past.
Scott
AskDocWeb: False positives have been reported with ibuprofen. The percocet may show positive for opiates (not false). Lortab is an opioid analgesic. The GC/MS test is much more accurate and false positives with this test are very rare.
Subj: Ephedrine
Date: 9/6/2007
I’m in the service and we always have random screenings….I have been taking ephedrine about three times a day to control my weight…because body fat standards is a must in the service…I recently failed a drug test…I showed positive for meth, and amphetamines…did the ephedrine cause that?
Godina
AskDocWeb: Yes, ephedrine has been reported to do that.
Subj: Trouble
Date: 9/6/2007
My younger brother, who is 55 y/o. He got in a little trouble a few years ago, which had nothing to do with illegal drugs. He had went to see his parole officer and they did a urine test and the lady that did the test ask him could he explain how Marijuana and cocaine got in system? He told them he has never used illegal drugs. And I know my brother, he hasn’t! He takes medication for cholesterol. For the last two or three weeks he’s had a nasty cold and has been using a cough syrup. What, if any medications could show up as Marijuana or Cocaine. His p/o told him to go to a Lab down the street, he had a urine test there, it showed negative. The nurse there told him “don’t say I told you, but some medications could cause that. Any help you can give will be appreciated.
William
AskDocWeb: Yes, it may have been the cough syrup that did it but, it could also have been one of the cheap tests. Some are not as accurate as we would like.
Subj: Hydrocodone
Date: 9/7/2007
Could doxycycline hyclate 100mg or hydrocodone/apap 7.5 mg/750 mg test positive for cocaine?
Joel
AskDocWeb: Doxycycline Hyclate is a semisynthetic broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic derived from oxytetracycline. It does not show up on standard urine tests. However, hydrocodone is an opioid.
Subj: Oxycodone
Date: 9/7/2007
Can oxycodone come up positive for cocaine on a pee drug test?
Darlene
AskDocWeb: I believe any opioid can come up positive for cocaine, and Oxycodone is an opioid.
Subj: Depakote
Date: 9/8/2007
I take Depakote for BiPolar Disorder and am a truck driver who is subject to random 5 panel drug screens. Is it possible for the Depakote to register a false positive for any of the drugs they are testing for?
Mike
AskDocWeb: Depakote has not been reported to cause a failed drug screening.
Subj: Tested positive for benzodiazepines
Date: 9/8/2007
I just again tested positive for benzodiazepines and what I take for bipolar and anxiety is buspar, trileptal, seroquel and abilify. If I continue to test positive they will put me in a 30 day inpatient detox program where I cannot even have visitors. This keeps happening and it’s been several weeks since I was injected with ativan by the hospital… My doctors are really believing I have some other source for benzo’s.
Cindi
AskDocWeb: None of the pills you are taking are on the list for causing a false positive.
Subj: Is it possible?
Date: 9/9/2007
I have a family member who his Dr put him on Dexadrin for ADHD. He just got out of prison and is on parole but he takes urine tests his P.O. says his test came back with some meth below amount to be reported but it is there. My brother claims he isn’t using and that he checked with the pharmacist. He told me that the pharmacist said it can test positive for meth but the P.O. told me he thinks he is just masking it with his medication. Is it possible that my brother is using again or can dexadrin test positive for meth along with amphetamines.
Heidi
AskDocWeb: Either is possible, if by dexadrin you meant dexedrine, it is an amphetamine.
