Suboxine
7/18/2012
Can you test positive for suboxine if you take hctz medication?

Carla

AskDocWeb: Suboxine is a common misspelling of Suboxone (buprenorphine and naloxone). It typically does not show up unless they do a specific test for it. The standard urine drug screens do not test for it. However according to an article from Clinical Chemistry (volume 55), there is a small chance that it may test false positive for oxycodone.

Diazepam
7/18/2012
Can diazepam give a positive for barbiturates? For butalbital?

Chris

AskDocWeb: No, the drug tests make a distinction between benzodiazepines and barbiturates and diazepam is not cross-reactive for barbiturates.

Positive for meth
7/19/2012
My daughter was given ephedra four times during the delivery of her premature baby. The baby tested positive for amphetamines, the mother did not. Hospital collected stool sample from baby on day two and sent for gc/ms testing. The result came back positive for meth. How could this happen?

Barbara

AskDocWeb: It does not make sense for the first test to show amphetamines and the confirmation test to show meth. That appears suspicious, like something is going on but we are reluctant to speculate. Ephedra has caused false positives for amphetamines and ecstasy but not for meth.

Naproxen (Aleve)
7/19/2012
Hi, im Cindy I am taking the medication for HIV called selzentry, prezista, norvir, and isentress for my problem. I have taken these for a while no problem has come up I’ve been drug tested and no sign of positive until I took naproxen can the mixture of these medication cause a false positive? I have not used I am just concerned. Please help.

Cindy

AskDocWeb: The problem is unlikely to be caused by a mixture of the medications. Naproxen all by itself has sometimes shown up as a false positive for marijuana (References: 1, 3, 16, 21).

Test shows ecstasy
7/19/2012
I am so upset. I have had 3 back surgeries and got addicted to pain pills. After being a slave to this drug for years, I finally got fed up. I went and got help. My results to my urine tests are very important to me. I got the results to my last test and it shows that ecstasy was detected in my urine. I HAVE NEVER TOUCHED THAT DRUG IN MY LIFE!!! WHAT COULD HAVE DONE THIS??

Tricia

AskDocWeb: Okay, take a deep breath and calm down. False positives can be eliminated by additional testing with a GC/MS confirmation test. If they can’t confirm it then it is not in your system. Unfortunately there are over 60 substances that may show a false positive for ecstasy. Some of these are over-the-counter and include some anti-depressants, cold medications, asthma and allergy meds, diet drugs, even kidney and liver problems have caused false positives for ecstasy. Check the big list to see if anything you are taking might be on it.

Zantac
7/19/2012
I recently took a drug screen and failed 9 hours prior to that i took a zantac pill 150 mg. the lab said i tested positive for amphetamines and opiates is this possible for someone who never used these drugs.

Allen

AskDocWeb: According to IT Laboratories (a certified drug testing laboratory), taking Zantac may result in a false positive for amphetamines. However, it has not shown up as an opiate on urine drug tests.

Fluticasone Propionate
7/20/2012
Will Fluticasone propionate Nasal Spray show false positive on UA?

Wendell

AskDocWeb: Fluticasone Propionate Nasal Spray is not known to show false positive on urine drug tests.

What’s the difference between LC-MS/Ms and GC/MS?
7/22/2012
Begging for your help in fighting to prove my innocence before my children are removed from my care forever! I was recently arrested and charged with dui. I have been on numerouse prescription medications due to my health. I was taking the following medications on a daily basis some of them up to 4 times a day: Vimpat, Keppra, generic roxycodone, generic morphine, amphetamine salts savella and loratidine. I had recently dealt with a terrible cold and had taken nyquil by mouth one day prior to my arrest. I tested positive for methamphetamine and have never touched no such drug in my life. What is the difference between LC-MS/Ms and GC/MS?

Veronica

AskDocWeb: GC/MS stands for Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry. In this test a portion of the sample is vaporized and a spectroscopic analysis is done on the components of that gas. The color spectrum of the substances present is somewhat like fingerprints for each substance since each one has a unique spectrum. The results of the GC/MS test specifically list exactly what is found in the sample.

LC/MS/MS stands for Liquid Chromatography with tandem Mass Spectrometry. This is an analytical technique where the sample first passes through a mass filter, which allows only the drugs being tested for to pass through. The sample is then broken apart with an argon gas stream. Those fragments then pass through a second mass filter and are measured. The LC/MS method is sensitive enough to detect and identify concentrations as small as 10 parts per billion.

In the last ten years the LC-MS/MS has seen a rapid rise in use for forensic and clinical applications. Part of this is due to the reduced specimen preparation time compared with the GC/MS test and no compound matching is required as in gas chromatography. Either one of these confirmation tests will eliminate false positives.

Barry

AskDocWeb: Since you don’t smoke pot it is likely that you’ll want to get a confirmation test. There are about 70 possible causes for a false positive for pot.

Omeprazole and zofran
7/23/2012
I am currently in a methadone maintenance program. I am 9 months pregnant and although I have been in the program for three years, I had not had a positive drug test. My doctor put me on omeprazole for heartburn and zofran for nausea. Well I had a urine test and it came back positive for benzos. I had another a week later and it tested positive for alcohol! And I honest to god don’t do either. Can someone pls tell me why it is showing up false positives? Thank you,

Heather

AskDocWeb: PPIs such as Omeprazole may test positive for marijuana but not for benzos. And Zofran has not been associated with false positives on tests for drugs of abuse so we have no explanation for you. However, it is important to protect yourself from accusations of drug abuse that can result from false positive test results. In order to do that you need a confirmation test to show that the original urine test was an error. The confirmation test must be done on the original sample and unfortunately that is not always possible because that sample may have been discarded.
