Subj: Adderall and Zantac
Date: 9/22/2007
I had a routine drug screening at the pain clinic I go to. I tested positive for amphetamines. I told them I was taking Actifed (OTC) for my allergies. They told me the GCMS confirmed my results and it was likely due to Adderall. I have never even heard of this drug. They discharged me from the clinic and I don’t know how to get them to believe me. I also take Zantac 150mg per day.

Subj: He was using cocaine and pot
Date: 9/25/2007
My son tried to commit suicide 3 weeks ago. We discovered at that time he was using cocaine and pot. He maintains that he has not used any of those substances since before the suicide attempt but tested positive for cocaine today. He takes Lexapro, Depakote and topical benzoyl peroxide for acne. He also took a large amount of Motrin, Advil, Hydrocodone and Zyrtek with the suicide attempt. Could any of these drugs cause a false positive?

Debbie

AskDocWeb: If he was actually using cocaine and pot then it wasn’t a false positive.

Subj: Tested positive for methamphetamines and amphetamines
Date: 9/25/2007
I recently had to take an immediate court ordered drug test because my ex wife was accusing me. The results said that I tested positive for methamphetamines and amphetamines. The lady said that I would have been on speed while I was in the courtroom according to those results. I have not done any of these whatsoever. I did have some Ibuprofen for a headache the night before, and a large Vault energy drink the day of. I went on my own and had a hair sample done. It just came back and said that I failed for methamphetamines, but had no trace of amphetamines in the hair. Why wouldn’t I fail for the amphetamines too, like the court drug test said?? I did take 2 oc sinus pills a week before the hair test, but not before the court ordered one. Any suggestions about what the heck is going on. The judge revoked my rights to have any visitation with my daughter and my lawyer seems to think I’m sol. Can the fact that the hair sample was negative for amphetamines help to prove the test was invalid???

Chad

AskDocWeb: That’s a question for your lawyer but if he thinks you’re SOL then either you are or you need a better lawyer. Several people have reported problems with energy drinks. Did you request a GC/MS confirmation test?

Subj: False positive for meth and amphetamine
Date: 9/27/2007
I would like to know if wellbutrin, buspar, and Asthmacort could cause a false positive for meth and amphetamine.

Matt

AskDocWeb: Wellbutrin and Asthma medications have been reported to cause a false positive for Amphetamines.

Subj: Prozac
Date: 9/28/2007
Can Prozac cause a false positive for THC on a urine drug screen? Thanks for your help!

Richard

AskDocWeb: Prozac is not on the list for causing a false positive in a drug screen test.

Subj: Positive for cocaine
Date: 9/29/2007
Recently I tested positive for cocaine in a urine test. I am taking Tegretol, Neurontin, Vistaril, Amoxicillin, Cialis and drink plenty of energy drinks. Can any of these cause my test to be positive?

Corey

AskDocWeb: Amoxicillin has been reported to show up as cocaine in urine tests.

Subj: Benadryl
Date: 10/1/2007
Can Benadryl cause a false positive on a urine test?

Pam

Subj: Oxycontin and Percocet
Date: 10/6/2007
Can Oxycontin and Percocet cause a false/positive for amphetamines or methamphetamines in a urine drug test?

Nancy

AskDocWeb: Percocet will test positive (not false) for opiates.

Subj: Tested positive for phenobarbital
Date: 10/8/2007
I recently tested positive for phenobarbital. I have never taken it. My current meds are Ibuprofen 600, tylenol codeine 3 for migraines, flonase and claritin and medical marijuana for pain. I have a prescription for all of these. HELP!

Christina

AskDocWeb: You need a GC/MS confirmation test to show what is really in your system.

Subj: Drug test for the police academy
Date: 10/10/2007
For the past year I have been taking (MSM) Methylsulfonylmethane 500 mg, Glucosamine 1500, for joint health, also I take NO2 (nitric oxide reactor which contains: Arginine Alpha-Ketoglutarate, creatine ethyl ester malate, glutamine alpha-ketoglutarate. Can any of these cause me to fail drug test. I’m due for a drug test in 2 weeks for the police academy. The clinic will test for anything including liver function. Please send me any valuable information.

Ned

AskDocWeb: No problems have been reported with those products so you should be fine.

Subj: Albuterol inhaler
Date: 10/11/2007
My x told me she UA tested positive for meth. She used albuterol inhaler the day before the test. They swabbed her the next day after the dirty and did a second test as well as another UA. Came back clean. Is this possible?

John

AskDocWeb: The chemical name for albuterol sulfate is (alpha) 1 [(tert-butylamino) methyl]-4-hydroxy-m-xylene-(alpha), (alpha)’-diol sulfate (2:1) (salt). It may be possible that the meth part of that is showing up in your drug test.

Subj: How likely to get a false positive?
Date: 10/12/2007
I’ve been sick for a few days now and have been taking amoxicillin, mucinexDM, and wal-tussin congestion (cough medicine). I also have chronic migraines for which I take roughly 800-1200mg of ibuprofen a day. How likely am I to get a false positive on a drug test?

Lara

AskDocWeb: There is no way to know that without knowing which test will be used but that wouldn’t do you any good here anyway, we don’t have data on the rate of false positives for every test. If you know the name of the test that will be used you might be able to do some research on that test, maybe on the manufacturer’s website.

Subj: Anti-inflammatory
Date: 10/16/2007
My husband tested positive or benzodiazapine he was taking an anti-inflammatory and antibiotic drugs he received from a Turkish Hospital. He tested positive two weeks in a row. How long could the anti inflammatory drug stay in his system?

Jody

AskDocWeb: It could take up to two weeks.

Subj: Cipro
Date: 10/16/2007
I have had a bladder infection and a kidney infection for three weeks I just recently started taking Cipro the day before I had a drug test, I have not taken any other medications or drugs and my test came back positive for opiates at a level of 400 and the cut off is 300, can my infection or the Cipro has caused this? Why did this happen? I have not used any opiates.

Tricia

AskDocWeb: The antibiotic Cipro has been reported to cause false positives for opiates.

Subj: Need answer right away
Date: 10/16/2007
I really just have a question needing answer like right away… I recently went to an interview to Wal-Mart, and was sent to get a UA done… well shortly after the test was done, I was informed that it was positive for cocaine… which I know I didn’t use… I am pretty much asking if there is any way you can help me prove that there are other ways to have a false positive other than using cocaine… I was taking soma, hydrcodone, and oxycodone, and had been drinking… I heard that tonic water, kidney infections, and stuff like that could cause the results, but I need to be able to bring proof to Wal-Mart so that I can try and get the job I was after… Please help!!! Best of regards,

Denise

AskDocWeb: Sorry Denise, we are not set up to give fast answers. For help, see the answer for Dee on 3/14/2007.

Subj: Cold medicine or lexapro?
Date: 10/17/2007
My son was in a pre-release center and doing very well. About 8 days before he was to be released they did a random urine drug screen. It came back really high for a morphine substance and they sent him directly to jail. I’m not naive but, I really don’t think he did that kind of drug. It’s really not his drug of choice. He had been sick with a bad cold and had been taking over the counter cold medication. The employee at the center said it was not possible for it to be a false positive that he would of had to take a gallon of cough medicine. He is also on Lexapro for depression. Could you please tell me if the cold medicine or the lexapro could have caused a high level for morphine substance on his test? I don’t know what test they use but I do know that the other residents handle the specimens. I would appreciate any input. Thanks,

Nancy

AskDocWeb: If the other residents handle the specimens, what’s to keep them from switching samples?
