Which tests prove it?
10/4/2012
I recently tested positive for amphetamines when all I take is folic acid, prenatals, and methyldopa 500mg/ daily for high blood pressure. How can I prove I dont use drugs. Never have. I dont even drink soda! I am a little over 7 months pregnant and would never harm my baby. Which tests actually prove what it in your system?
Stephanie
AskDocWeb: There are two main choices for a confirmation test. The GC/MS is considered the “Gold Standard” and is used most often. GC/MS stands for Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. A part of your sample vaporized into a gas and a spectroscopic analysis is done on the components of that gas. The color spectrum of the substances when combined with its specific mass identifies exactly what is in the sample.
The other test is LC/MS/MS, which stands for Liquid Chromatography with tandem Mass Spectrometry. This is an analytical technique where the sample first passes through a mass filter, which allows only the drugs being tested for to pass through. The sample is then broken apart with an argon gas stream. Those fragments then pass through a second mass filter and are identified and measured. The LC/MS method is sensitive enough to detect and identify concentrations as small as 10 parts per billion.
Up & Up Migraine Relief
10/4/2012
Can migraine relief over counter Med called up & up cause me to have positive ua for barbiturates?
Cindy
AskDocWeb: It took a while to find the ingredients in Target’s store brand of Migraine Relief. It does not appear to be sold online. Anyway, Migraine Relief is a combination product containing acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine. None of those three are on the list of possible causes for a false positive urine test result. If you are sure that your positive UA is incorrect then getting a GC/MS confirmation test is a good idea for a number of reasons. Not contesting the results is effectively the same thing as admitting that you are guilty of drug abuse.
Lyrica

Will lyrica test positive for anything in a drug screen?
Rebecca
AskDocWeb: No, Lyrica (Pregabalin) is not one of the possible causes of a false positive on urine drug screens.
Zanax (Xanax) use during pregnancy
10/4/2012
I am 26 weeks pregnant and I have been off zanax for awhile now. Recently I have not been able to sleep and I have tried everything. So on Monday I took some zanax that I had and it helped me sleep. I kept taking it till Thursday. I do have a prescription and my dr was well aware of me taking this right when I found out I was pregnant but told me to cut down. So… with that being said will this show up in the meconium test they do at the hospital and will my baby be taken away from me? I am a nervous wreck!!
Amanda
AskDocWeb: The Meconium test is a 10 panel drug test. It can detect maternal drug use during the last 4 to 5 months of pregnancy. This type of test typically detects the following drugs: cocaine, amphetamine, methamphetamine (Ecstasy, meth), marijuana, methadone, opiates (heroin), phencyclidine (PCP), barbiturates, tricyclic antidepressants, and benzodiazepines. Since Xanax is a benzodiazepine it will probably show up. It sounds like you need to have an honest talk with your doctor about your use of Xanax and what you might expect after delivery.
Positive for methamphetamine?
10/5/2012
My name is Sarah and im currently on probation. I have been for the past 13 months and have never failed any drug analysis. Last Tuesday I came up positive for methamphetamine. I have not used meth. I am terrified of the consequences I am facing. I only have 5 months remaining until i complete my probationary sentence and have 2 children that are 2yrs old and 1yr old. No medicine im taking has changed except for now im prescribed Vicoden 5mg and aside from my prescribed Albuterol inhalor im taking walgreens brand bronchial asthma medication (primetine tablets, bronkaide, etc). Researching related information is what led me to you. If you can please provide me with some helpful information I would be extremely grateful thanks,
Sarah
AskDocWeb: Hi Sarah, welcome. Some of your meds may cause false positives but not for methamphetamine. However, your test result may still be a false positive. The problem with urine tests is that positive results are presumptive. That means that if you get a non-negative test result, you are guilty until proven innocent. The only way to prove your innocence (that we know of) is by additional testing of the original sample to confirm the results. If the confirmation test comes back negative then you are clear. Good luck.
VPX Redline
10/5/2012
I drank VPX Redline supplement that contains B-PEA. I drank it twice in the last week. Can show up positive on urine drug screen?
Christopher
AskDocWeb: A little research turned up the following ingredients for the VPX RedLine that comes as a drink:
- Proprietary Blend: 910mg
- Caffeine Citrate
- Caffeine Anhydrous
- Evoburn? (Pure Evodiamine)
- Octapomine
- Guggulsterone E & Z
- Yerbe Mate
- Green Tea
- Synephrine
- cAMP (adenosine cyclic 3′,5′-monophosphate)
- Vinpocetine
- Yohimbine HCL
Other Ingredients:
- Highly purified water
- lecithin
- polyethelne
- glycol
- glycerine
- propylene glycol
- sucralose
- natural flavor & colors in VPX’s proprietary liposomal matrix
The drink we found did not contain B-PEA. However we did find a supplement called VPX Redline Ultra Hardcore that is sold in capsules that does contain B-PEA. It is listed as Iphoric® Potent Methyl B-PEA Matrix (315 mg). This is VPX’s name for their PEA / phenylethylamine complex, which has not been reported to cause false positives on urine drug screens.
Please note that a lot of “dietary supplements” show up on urine drug tests as a “clouding agent” which makes it appear that you are trying to hid your drug abuse by tricking the test. We are not saying that this is one of them but giving a false impression of guilt can be as bad a false positive.
False positive for cocaine
10/5/2012
I have just been released from the hospital for pancreatitis. Prior to going into the emergency room I had been using Bengay excessivly for pain relief for about 6 days. I used it over my back & shoulders constantly for at least about 15 hrs. a day. Sometimes I would have it put on immediately after a very hot bath. It went straight into the pores and it hurt terribly but then the relief would come & last for hours. While in the hospital it said in my blood tests that I tested positive for cocaine. I have never in my life taken cocaine. I had not been anywhere for 7 days prior to being admitted into the hospital. Could the excessive use of bengay make it seem like I used cocaine? Please give me advice. I am so bothered by this blood test reading. I DO NOT use any illegal drugs.
Laurie
AskDocWeb: The main ingredient in Ben-Gay is methyl salicylate, which may cause some types of false positives but not on drug tests for drugs of abuse. If you face legal consequences ask a Lawyer. At a minimum we would contest the results and get a confirmation test to prove that the result was a false positive, assuming that it is. Keep in mind that the results are also entered into your medical records and that can follow you for a long time.
