Subj: Some and Ranitidine
Date: 11/9/2007
Could you please tell me if somas will show a positive urine test for benzos? And how long on average do somas stay in your system? Last time I used somas was on Saturday night and on Wednesday my test came back + for benzos. That was the first time using somas in months. I do use no other drugs nor prescription drugs other than rantidine. HELP PLEASE!

Renee

AskDocWeb: It is possible that the Soma you are taking has Codeine in it, ask your pharmacist. Ranitidine has also been reported to cause false positives for Amphetamines.

Subj: Levothyroxine, Dimetapp, Tylenol PMS, Airborn and CVS Airsheild
Date: 11/11/2007
I have just got a job offer, and am about to start work for this company. But, before I do so, I am required to pass a drug test. I am not sure how this drug test will be taken, for example, urine or hair, etc… But I do take some medications such as…I am prescribed to take 50 MCG of Levothyroxine every morning, because of an under active thyroid. I also have been sick so I have been taking Dimetapp about 4Tsp a Day. I have been taking 2 Tylenol PMS at night. I also have been taking Airborn and CVS Airsheild to boost my immune system, contains a lot of vitamin C and other things. I am very nervous now as to wheather or not I will have a false positive on my test, what should I do? Will these cause a false positive? And how long will it take to get a drug test result? I need an answer to this ASAP!! Thanks you so much!

-Everett

AskDocWeb: Tell the testers what drugs you are taking and if you get a positive insist on a GC/MS confirmation test.

Subj: Djurum brand clove cigarettes
Date: 11/12/2007
Djurum brand clove cigarettes gave me a false positive for cocaine. After researching about clove cigs, I found out it has toxicol, eugenol and prolyzed cloves in it. The toxicol and eugenol use to be used frequently in dentistry for pain killers. I am a nurse and have NEVER done drugs. And after 30 years of being a nurse, I started smoking clove cig 1 month ago and applied for a new job and failed. The clove cigs are the only thing it could be. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You,

Brenda

Subj: Tested Positive for Opiates on Urinalysis
Date: 11/12/2007
Hello I just tested positive for Opiates for a urine test this morning. However I haven’t used an opiate like Vicatin for years. I also had an everything bagel for breakfast before the drug test. I have been trying to learn as much as possible about why I failed the drug test, however are there new tests that can detect small or large amounts however I do not now which test was used. I have asked the employer to run a GC/MS in hopes of clearing this up. Is there anything else I could do thanks?

Shaun

AskDocWeb: We know of nothing else you might do. Readers who have successfully fought a false positive are encouraged to share their story.

Subj: Topical corticosteroids
Date: 11/13/2007
I have read that prednisone will cause a false positive for cocaine. Can topical corticosteroids such as clobetasol cause false positives as well?

Rs

AskDocWeb: We have found no evidence that would indicate topical corticosteroids maight cause a false positive.

Subj: Tylenol PM
Date: 11/13/2007
Would an excessive dose of Tylenol PM cause a false positive for THC?

Kay

AskDocWeb: No.

Subj: Pre-hiring drug screen
Date: 11/13/2007
Hi, I went to a pre-hiring drug screen today and was under the impression it would be a urine test which it turned out to be a hair test. I am on several meds and I wonder, can any of them give false positives… Busbar, depekote, pherphenizine, xanax, anitriptiline, ibuprofine clonzapine, wellbutrin vicoden and was givin morphine in the hospital about 5 months ago and lamictal tylenol 3 with codine and robitussin with codine? Should I have given this info to them… or at least try catch it before they send it out?

Heather

AskDocWeb: Taking a list along may be a good idea in some cases, it certainly can’t hurt.

Subj: Medications that might cause a false-positive?
Date: 11/14/2007
Will the following medications cause a false-positive result with a drug screen: Benadryl, Diovan, Synthroid, and cimetidine (antacid medication). Thanks.

Trisha

AskDocWeb: Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) has been reported to show up as false positives for Benzodiazepines, PCP, and Tricyclic Antidepressants 2-4 days after a single use (Reference 45).

Subj: Soboxne?
Date: 11/14/2007
I was wondering if the drug soboxne would show up in a drug test or show up as a false pos. Please answer ASAP.

Scott

AskDocWeb: If you have been abusing it, it might show up but not as a false positive.

Can acute renal failure /renal insufficiency cause a positive for cocaine on drug test, also can cocaine be absorbed thru the skin.

Keith

AskDocWeb: According to some sources kidney disease can cause a false positive for cocaine. The powdered form of Cocaine can be absorbed through the skin although most readily through mucous membranes such as the mouth, nose, lips, eyes, etc.

Subj: Anti anxiety meds
Date: 11/16/2007
Are there any over the counter anti anxiety meds that would give a false positive for benzodiaphine?

Beverly

AskDocWeb: None have been reported but be careful with mixing over-the-counter anti-anxiety meds with prescription drugs. Some, like St. Johns Wart, shouldn’t be mixed with prescription medication.

Subj: False positive?
Date: 11/16/2007
I have been taking Clonazepam for 3-1/2 years daily. I was told today by my MD (osteopathic) that I tested “positive” for a a “benzo-diazepine. I did not ask which lab did the urine drug test; a copy of lab (urine) results; and/or the amt. of the “other benzodiazepine” in my system. Frankly, I simply thought nothing of it until I was on my way home. Then it dawned on me what kind of “consequences” this may mean. He kept asking me if I took any other “sleep aids” (I have been on regular Zyrtec for so many years until several weeks ago). After MD left office I realized several times in past few months I had taken melatonin (1 mg.) from Life Extension. I told my MD’s nurse Karen to please be sure my MD got the information re the melatonin. Then I also realized I had been taking Benadryl (non-generic) on and off for several months due to my allergies – did not relay the Benadryl info due to fact I didn’t realize until I got home and looked in medicine cabinet. I gave another urine sample today at MD’s office. Do you have any info as to why my urine lab results may have caused a false positive? The more I am thinking about this, I am very concerned.

Teresa

AskDocWeb: Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) has been reported to show up as false positives for Benzodiazepines, PCP, and Tricyclic Antidepressants 2-4 days after a single use. (Reference 45).

Subj: Amoxicillin
Date: 11/16/2007
Hello I am currently taking VI-Q-Tuss and Amoxicillon. I have to take a drug test for a job. Do you think that this will cause a false positive?
Jahmeek

AskDocWeb: It is possible that the Amoxicillin could cause a false positive on a drug test as well as the cough syrup. If it does make sure they follow up with a GC/MS confirmation test.

Subj: MRO not a doctor
Date: 11/17/2007
I have recently lost my 100k a year job due to a positive on a hair follicle test that showed 956 pecograms in my system I have never even seen cocaine. I am currently taking zoloft, wellbutrin XL, provigil, and a z-pack and vick’s inhalers in the last month any of these cause a false positive on a micro something test and also found out the MRO on my test is not a doctor, does that matter?

ANTHONY

AskDocWeb: MRO refers to a “Medical Review Officer” and in all cases must be a medical doctor (MD). The MRO helps protect both the rights of the employee being tested and the employer requiring the testing.

Subj: PharmaGenX
Date: 11/20/2007
I recently purchased a supplement to help me gain muscle weight/mass. It’s called pharmagenx (Finigenx Magnum). I read some on-line and have difficulty deciding for myself whether it’s safe to take and will not provide false positive on urinalysis. By the way, I am in the military and random urinalysis is always being conducted. Please response as soon as possible, thanks.

Elizabeth

AskDocWeb: We didn’t find any first hand evidence that PharmaGenX would cause a false positive but there seems to be a lot of talk about problems with Aromatase inhibitors causing false positive test results. With something this important, you may want to contact the manufacturer directly. By the way, thank you for your service to our country.
