Custody battle
1/11/2013
I am going though a custody battle to get my son away from his father who is on drugs and I asked for drug screenings and I tested positive for Amphetamine. I do not take that at all. I had a seizure and had my scripts for anything else that may have shown one was a narcotic so that was ok but I do not know how I tested positive for the other.
My son is ADHAD and takes a medication but I do not get it. I have also been sick with the dlu and taken different things to help none did but what do I do? They throw out the urine so how can I fix this to prove it was false? It is very frustaring and I really need advice thank you so much.
Michelle
AskDocWeb: It sounds like you need legal advice. For that you would have to ask a Lawyer.
Positive UA for PCP
1/11/2013
I had a false pos+ on an UA for PCP. I take saboxn, HYDROXYZINE(450mgs a day) docusate, quetiapine(300mg daily) I never have taken PCP in my life!!! My Rx provider thinks it may be the HYDROXYZINE. I really need to find out how I popped + because this mistake can cost me everything. So PLEASE HELP? Or point me in the right direction.
Charles
AskDocWeb: The list of substances that have shown up as a false positive for PCP is pretty short:
- Benadryl (Diphenhydramine)
- Diazepam
- Doxylamine
- Effexor Tablets (venlafaxine hydrochloride)
- Ketamine
- Lamotrigine (Lamictal®)
- Theraflu (formulas containing diphenhydramine)
- Tylenol Simply Sleeps (Diphenhydramine)
If you have a false positive from one of the above, getting a GC-MS confirmation test should rule that out.
Hair test
1/11/2013
I am taking Trazadone and Celexa. I have been having serious migrane problems and have been taking Motrin 800mg every six hours as directed by my doctor. Can it making my hair test come back positive for THC or will the lab that does it (which is a DCF lab) know that it is Motrin?
M.P.
AskDocWeb: Hair tests are subject to false positives caused by many of the same substances that cause them on urine tests. That is why it is important to get the results confirmed by additional testing. In many cases the confirmation test is performed upon receiving a positive test result as a matter of policy but always check to make sure.
DCF stands for 67 things but most often refers to Department of or for Children and Families.
False reading on a drug screen?
1/12/2013
I tested positive for methamphetamines on a drug test and have NEVER done this in my life. I’m prescribed Lortab, Prednisone, and an Albuterol Inhaler! Before the test i had taken over the counter cough syrup (an off brand of thera-flu) an off brand of zantac for acid control and benadryl! Would any of these cause a false reading on a drug screen? I really need some help with this, thank you very much!
Travis
AskDocWeb: The only candidate that we see might be a cause is the Zantac. According to Redwood Toxicology Laboratory (Reference 33) and Blue Grass Drug Screen, Inc. (Reference 52) Zantac (ranitidine) may test positive for methamphetamines. Assuming you have a false positive, if you get a GC-MS confirmation test that should clear up the test result.
Sniffs heroin?
1/13/2013
If someone sniffs heroin and you have sex with them, can you test positive on a urine test for opiates.
Sarah
AskDocWeb: There are several reasons why having sex with a junkie is bad for your health. Although they may claim that they are not junkies, they are deceiving themselves, probably because of the myth among users that sniffing heroin is less addicting – not true. It is just as bad as shooting up. Although we have no data on the risk of testing positive by a person who has sex with someone who sniffs heroin there are other risks. By having sex with a person who sniffs heroin you are at considerable risk of getting HIV, hepatitis, and other serious diseases.
There is also the problem that some people sniff heroin in combination with cocaine so you might test positive for that. See National Institute on Drug Abuse.
False-positive for COCAINE?
1/14/2013
Will any of the following meds cause a false-positive for COCAINE? zolpidem tartrate, sertraline hcl, or trazodone hcl? your quik reply is appreciated.
Darlene
AskDocWeb: There is a possibility that those medications may show up for other drugs of abuse but not for cocaine.
DHR drug assessment
1/15/2013
My husband and I had bath taken promethazine the night before and roughly 3 hours before we had to take a drug test and it came back positive for anphethamines. DHR considered that a fail and now to get our child back home we are having to go through a drug assessment and let some stranger decided if we can have our child back. I have never did an illegal drug a day in my life and now I am having to go through he!! to prove to a stranger that he and I are good parents. I have read that promethazine can casue a false positive and was wondering what your thoughts were on this?
Carrie
AskDocWeb: There are reports of Promethazine showing up as a false positive for marijuana (THC) but not for amphetamines. We suggest demanding a GC/MS confirmation test when dealing with DHR.
Positive for oxazepam
1/15/2013
I take Xanax and Clonazepam, I’ve recently taken a drug test that came up positive for oxazepam. I’ve never taken Diazepam. How could Oxazepam come up in my drug test?
Dezarae
AskDocWeb: We don’t have an answer you as this has not been studied in the past. There are a few reports of false positives for oxazepam but a causative link has not been established. If more of these start showing up on drug screens maybe someone will do a study. We’ll keep you posted.
False positive for Fentanyl?
1/16/2013
Hello. I am currently on Methadone and must have weekly urine drug screens. I’ve been on it for about 3 months now and my screens have continuously come back positive for Fentanyl. I have never used or taken Fentanyl in my life. Of course the doctor doesn’t believe me, which is why I’m looking to you for help. I am on quite a few medications: Gabapentin, Baclofen, Respiradone, Lorazepam, Clonazepam, Mirtazapine, Celexa and Clorazepate. Is it possible that any of these or mixture thereof is causing me to test positive for Fentanyl?
Danny
AskDocWeb: Sorry Danny, our database doesn’t show anything that would cause a false positive for Fentanyl.
Suboxone
1/16/2013
Will or what will suboxone show up in a SAP-10-50 GC/MS?
Elizabeth
AskDocWeb: Yes, Suboxone will show up as Buprenorphine HCl and naloxone HCl. Buprenorphine is a narcotic under the Controlled Substances Act due to its chemical derivation from thebaine. Naloxone is an opiate antagonist that is structurally related to oxymorphone.
