Subj: False positive for PCP
I would like to know what drugs that would cause a false positive for PCP could it be a seizure med or an antidepressant or a non-narcotic pain med?
AskDocWeb: The only drugs that have been reported to cause a false positive for PCP are Diazepam, Ketamine, Diphenhydramine, and Effexor Tablets (venlafaxine hydrochloride).
Can the IBS drug hyoscyamine cause a false positive result in a urine test?
AskDocWeb: Neither Hyoscyamine Hydrobromide nor Hyoscyamine Sulfate have been reported to cause a false positive.
Will acetaminaphen cause a failed urine test for pain killers?
AskDocWeb: Acetaminophen sold as Tylenol with codeine has been reported to cause a false positive.
Subj: Tested positive for methadone
I tested positive for methadone on an instant test, and it was sent to a lab and also had a positive result, I have not used any drugs in months. I was taking nyquil, shouldn’t the lab have been able to tell the difference?
AskDocWeb: That depends on the accuracy of the lab and what test they used. The more expensive tests show what products are in the system but the cheap ones do not.
Subj: Cross reactivity
I am a review officer for a number of drug testing programs. A pre-employment drug test for an applicant showed up (+) for Oxazepam. He denies using any of the prescription drugs, but does recall using propoxyphene 2 weeks ago and Valerian Root. In my review of the literature, I have not seen where Valerian Root metabolizes to oxazepam. Propoxyphene will not cause this result. Are you aware of any cross reactivity of Valerian Root with Oxazepam on drug testing?
AskDocWeb: No, we have seen nothing that would indicate any cross reactivity.
Subj: False positive for Methadone
I was given a drug test today and it came up with a false positive for Methadone. I take Effexor 300mg, Daypro 600mg, Estrace 2mg, a Docusate Sodium 100 mg, some times two every morning. I wear a Fentanyl Transdermal Patch 100 mcg/h which I change every other day as for some reason I have to change the patch more frequently then most because it seems my body soaks out the medicine more quickly. Through out the day I take Endocet and once in a while a Klonopin 1mg. At bedtime, I take Trazadone 200mg, Klonopin 2mg, another Daypro 600 mg, two Baclofin 40mg and one or two more Docusate Sodium 100mg. I spray my nose every morning with Instant Ocean. I have not taken any cold medicine. Yesterday, I did take two Excedrin Back and Body. What caused the false positive for methadone?
AskDocWeb: Check your meds against the list provided on this page.
Will Lexapro show up on a drug screen as a false positive?
AskDocWeb: It is not on the list.
Subj: Albuteral or xopenex
Can the inhaler albuteral or xopenex cause a false positive for amphetamines?
AskDocWeb: Neither one has been report to cause a false positive.
Subj: Tested positive methamphetemines
I have been a patient at a methadone clinic for 7+ years. I have not taken any illicit drugs since the first day I walked thru the doors… I have NEVER had any problem with my drug screens. Which I take 8 per year. And now I have tested positive methamphetemines, this is the second time in six months… I have always taken my nose spray since the day I started the clinic so I don’t think its that…I do take (OTC) zantac everyday, 150mg pills times 2-4 for heartburn…can this be the problem?
AskDocWeb: It is possible, Zantac is now on our list.
Subj: Advil and Aleve
My husband was just recently tested after sustaining an injury at work. He came back positive for THC. He has not smoked in quite a while and we do not understand how this is possible. He has been suffering with a cold/flu for a few weeks prior and was taking an off brand over the counter medicine equivalent to Dayquil. Also because we are in the winter months he takes Advil and Aleve on a daily basis for his aches and pains. I see the Advil and Aleve in the list but how likely is it and what is it that causes the false positive readings? Please help.
AskDocWeb: Sorry Tania, we don’t have enough data to know how likely or often this occurs. We suggest you get a GC/MS confirmation test to document this false positive and keep that documentation.
Subj: Got caught
My boyfriend got caught high at school (marijuana) and now he has to take drug tests every 2 weeks. He’s failed 2 already. He swore up and down that he was clean but now his 3rd one has come back and he failed miserably. It’s doubled what it was. He swears it was the bag of cough drops he ate. Can they cause a false positive?
AskDocWeb: That depends on what the ingredients are in the cough drops, check the false positive drug list.
Subj: False positive for t.h.c.
I have had a false positive for t.h.c. and I recently went to the emergency room for an infection, they give me a shot substance unknown, an antibiotics. Is there anything they could have gave me that could have caused this? I had the split specimen tested and it still come up positive.
AskDocWeb: Yes, it may be possible. Some antibiotics have been reported to cause false positives. (See reference numbers 13, 16, 18, 20, 21, 26, and 29)
Will a shot of Ultram show up on a drug test as positive for benzodiazapine?
Subj: Positive for estascy
I had strep throat and was prescribed a throat and pain medicine with morphine in it. I also take Estadiol(a hormone replacement) and buspirone for panic attacks. I also had taken Claritin “D”. My urine results came back positive for estascy? but not the hair test. I am a 57 year old woman. I do not even know what estacsy is? Did anything that I am taking cause this? Thank you!
AskDocWeb: It is possible, that sometime happens with the initial urine tests but a GC/MS confirmation test will clear that up.
Can Flexeril cause a false positive for benzo’s on a urine drug screen. Also taking prenatal vitamins and Tylenol.
AskDocWeb: Flexeril has not been reported cause any problems on drug screens.
Subj: Failed for cocaine and THC
I’m about to go to jail if I don’t get some help… I Please help me! I have been prescribed pain pills from the doctor and I took them the day I went to probation, and got the results back and I failed for cocaine and THC but did not fail for opiates. I was wondering could the pills cause a false drug test? Please help soon.
AskDocWeb: The only thing we can suggest is to get a GC/MS confirmation test.
Subj: Positive for Meth
I recently had an employee take a drug test and we found out today it came back positive for Meth. She assures me that she does not do meth in fact she is not 3 months pregnant and I truly want to believe her. Her father has been arrested for making meth and she visited him over the weekend to tell him she was pregnant and ate dinner over there and came to work on Monday and had to take a standardize drug test that all my employees took. My question and hers as well is could she have come in contact in any way to the meth to make her test come back positive? Example…eating dinner from a plate, bowl in which he used to make meth? She said the only other thing she could even come up with is that she is taking an allergy medicine right now. Please help!
Curious in AR
AskDocWeb: Allerest has been reported to sometimes cause a false positive for Meth. See references 1, 2, 3, 7, 11, 16, and 18.
Require your help ASAP please. I was informed that I would need PROOF of amoxicillin causing a positive for cocaine. Tested positive on a recent urine screen. I am a paramedic and I do not use illegal drugs. At the time of the test, I was on Amoxicillin therapy for an infection. Could this cause a false positive for cocaine?
AskDocWeb: Amoxicillin has been reported to cause a false positive on urine screen tests. It may be easier to prove your innocence with a GC/MS confirmation test than it would be to prove that amoxicillin could cause a positive for cocaine.
