False positive for THC?
Date: 3/18/2013
I take plavix, lipitor, coreg and bayer 81 mg on a daily basis. I also have taken on a regular basis, generic ibrupropen, generic naproxen, vicks nasal spray, and even midol to kick the pain and no help. I have had a recent urine drug screen and it showed positive for thc. I am not a user and don’t understand how this happened and want to know if any of these or a combination of these could have caused a false positive for thc? Please help as my job is in jepardy because of this. I am requesting a retest, but they will only retest the sample they have already retrieved. I was ask for a list of all medications that I have taken in the last 90 days and these are what I have remembered taking.

Carolyn

AskDocWeb: Most likely it was the Ibuprofen. Several sources say that Ibuprofen can test false positive for THC (References: 1, 14, 16, 18, 20, 26, and 29). In order to prove that your test result was a false positive they will need to do a confirmation test, usually GC/MS, on the sample that they already retrieved. That is generally referred to as “additional testing” rather than a “retest”.

Favorite?

Will favorite show up on a standard urine drug test?

Mrs. H.

AskDocWeb: Favorite what? That depends on which favorite you are talking about and who manufactures it. If you can give enough detail to identify the product we will check it out.

Creatine level
Date: 3/19/2013
i was drug tested and there telling me that it was positive for creatine and amphetamine so now there talking about taking my child. if creatine is for the mucsles and yes it can give energy why would i take that when i could come out poitive for amphetamine. i was told that it is to much water or i used something to cover up my urine from testing positive for methamphetamines.

Cindy

AskDocWeb: You MUST have a certain amount of creatine in your urine to pass a urine drug test. If the creatine level is either too high or too low, that makes the specimen suspect because that is the most common way used to try to mask drug use. Drinking unusual amounts of water will dilute the urine and a drug may not show up – but – it also lowers your creatine level. Some people tried taking a creatine supplement to cover up their attempt to dilute their urine. However, this often results in levels that are unusually high so that also makes it look like you are trying to hide drug use.

Ketoconazle
Date: 3/20/2013
I recently took a drug test and failed. I tested positive for cocaine. I had been taking ketoconazle for three weeks prior. Can this drug give a false positive for cocaine? Thanks

Al

AskDocWeb: Ketoconazole is a synthetic antifungal and antiandrogenic drug used to prevent and treat fungal skin infections. It does not cause false positives for cocaine.

Failed for THC!
Date: 3/20/2013
I was reading your false positives page and would like to ask a question. I used to smoke marijuana and quit on January 9th. I took a pre-employment drug test on March 13th and failed! I have been clean and havnt touched the stuff and hadnt been smoking long anyway, what wouldve caused me to fail? Any ideas? I ate a gardenish omlete the morning of but Ive done all the research possible and cant figure out why I failed…it was a 50ng/ml test I think….I dont understand the numbers…Please I quit smoking and never EVER am going back so it stuns and kills me inside to fail and not know why. It was THC in the test… Thank you for your feedback I greatly appreciate it. Sincerely,

Callie

AskDocWeb: There are over 70 products on the list that might cause a false positive for THC. In addition to that, those with diabetes, kidney infection and/or liver disease have also tested positive for THC. If you aren’t taking anything on the list then you may want to get a physical.

Weight gain supplement
Date: 3/20/2013
Hi can u please help.me out. i been takin a wieght supplement to gain weight.and i believe that this product had made me test positive for cocaine in a uririn sample.theres about over 50 ingreduants in it.but it seems like all of the ungrediants is not comparing to the ones on your page like “echinacea, dodeca, undeca, echinacea angustfollia, undeca, lecithin, isobutylamides., gelatin. can this be the cause why i hade false results?

Wayne

AskDocWeb: Caution, this is going to be a short rant. Our first impression of those ingredients is one of suspicion for two reasons.

1. Some businesses choose arcane or uncommon names for their ingredients in an attempt to fool customers about their useless products. For example undeca is NOT an ingredient. It is a prefix meaning the number 11. Likewise dodeca is also not an ingredient. That term is used chiefly in scientific and musical terms, which means twelve or having twelve of something.

2. Putting over 50 ingredients in a supplement is one way to overwhelm potential customers with detail so that they get a false sense of the product’s effectiveness.

With that said, if you are going to put unknown substances into your body then you need to be prepared for unexpected consequences. Hopefully a GC/MS confirmation test would come back in your favor. Good luck.

Clartin D
Date: 3/20/2013
Can Clartin D 12 hour cause a false positive on drug tes?

Donna

AskDocWeb: That would be a yes for two reasons. Clartin D is a combination drug consisting of loratadine and pseudoephedrine. The generic drug loratadine has been reported to show up as false positives for morphine, meth, and ecstasy (References: 1, 11, 16, and 18). It is also sold under the brand names Claritin, Alavert, Claritin Reditab, Claritin Hives Relief, Clear-Atadine, Clear-Atadine Children’s, Loratadine Reditab, Ohm Allergy Relief, Tavist ND, Wal-itin, and Dimetapp ND.

Pseudoephedrine may be detected as amphetamines (speed) (References: 3, 11, 18, 21, 36, 48, and 57).
