Lab screw-ups
Date: 7/2/2013
Unfortunately gc/ms doesn’t prevent lab screwups. Drug testing labs are a growth industry and lab techs make mistakes. Lab procedures aren’t always what they should be either. I worked in two of them. I’ve seen urine mixups, spills, all kinds of things.

AskDocWeb: That is so true, which is why we always recommend using a SAMHSA certified lab for a confirmation test. At least that minimizes the chances of human error. For a list of SAMHSA certified laboratories see page 185.

can methacrylate polymer acrylic nail powder cause a false positive drug result?

AskDocWeb: We have not seen any scientific literature suggesting that methacrylate polymer acrylic nail powder might cause a false positive of tests for drugs of abuse.

Hard lesson
Date: 7/3/2013
I was given something for energy & I didn’t know that it was an Amphetamine, I was told it was something that you can get from a gas station etc… I took them & later that day I was drug tested at work. When the lab called me to ask about my med’s & then told me what they had found I still didn’t know, until later! Found out I was actually given 3-70mg Vvyanse. I have never done drugs before that were not given to me by a doctor so I’m lost on what I should do from here! My job hasn’t called me back yet. Do I even bother with telling them what happened? It sounds like a yeah right, story! Thank you for anyone’s opinion!

AskDocWeb: Vvyanse is a brand name of L-lysine-D-amphetamine. Hopefully in the future you will keep in mind that taking a prescription drug that is not prescribed for you is against the law.

I have just had a drugs test for work and as always i wasnt worried bcause i am clean, however i had taken diclofenac a few weeks ago and now taking naproxen and my test showed amphetamines and ephdrines so i had a blood test done…can naproxen have affects on my testing as am afraid i will lose my job.

AskDocWeb: Naproxen (Aleve) has shown up as a false positive for THC (marijuana) on urine tests but not amphetamines (References 3, 16, and 18).

Amphetamines and methamphetamines but no THC
Date: 7/4/2013
I was in an accident 3 months ago after falling asleep behind the wheel and was pretty concussed and confused afterward. I was not at all under any influence but i couldnt remember anything which made the officer suspect i was under the influence. he brought me in for a UA and a few weeks later i recieved charges in the mail for DUI saying i tested positive for amphetamines and methamphetamines. The only things i ingested in days previous to the accident were methylhex 4.2 and various pain relievers for my joints. i know this has to somehow be a false positive, not only because of this but because im a fairly regular pot smoker and thc never appeared in the screening. i know these pills are the only thing i took within 72 hours prior to UA. connection? how else can it be explained?

AskDocWeb: One possibility is that your sample became switched with another, although that is highly unlikely, it is possible.

Testosterone replacement gel
Date: 7/6/2013
Yes, I was enquiring if Testosterone replacement gel can cause a failed urine drug test?

AskDocWeb: There are no reports of false positives on urine drug tests for drugs of abuse in the published literature on Testosterone replacement gel. Of course if you get what you suspect is a false positive then additional testing is indicated.

Alcohol tests
Date: 7/8/2013
I am going through a nasty divorce. My ex is a life long alcoholic, hence the divorce. I drink socially and responsibly. He’s had DUI’s and has been in and out rehabs throughout our marriage. I am fighting for sole custody. I asked that he remain sober and test through TASC with etg to have visitation. He insisted on me testing as well. I agreed.

On 6/25/2013 we had a court date and the judge reduced the testing for both of us due to 2 months of negative testing. On that same day my ex tested positive for etg. On 6/26/13 I brought my new paperwork to TASC to switch to twice a month testing. I voluntarily tested that day because my old color had not come up nor had my new color come up so I didn’t want to have a missed test somewhere in between. I assumed I would probably get called in again on 6/27 and 6/28 as my new testing was twice a month and it was the end of the month.

On 6/27 I did get called in. My 6/26 test was negative and my 6/27 test was positive. The ONLY thing I did in less than 24 hours was spray out my city trash cans with Lysol. I have since sumbitted for a GC/MS test but I’m concerned that if the EIA/ETG came up positive for the ethanol that is in Lysol, will the GC/MS test also show ethanol even if it was from incidental exposure? I will test for PEth if my GC/MS comes back positive because I have not drank at all.

Warning to everyone, read your products. Lysol (mine is actually walgreens brand) has 30.8% ethanol and my exposure was extensive as I was practically inside the trash can and it was all over my skin and I inhaled it and then less than 24 hours later after a negative test I test positive for ethanol. I plan on looking into the class action lawsuit the doc mentioned and I will sue TASC if I have to.

AskDocWeb: Unfortunately the GC/MS test can not identify the source of a substance, only whether or not it is present in a sample.
