Tested positive for Amphetamines
Date: 7/13/2013
I recently tested positive for Amphetamines and have NEVER in my life done anything like that. im currently taking a few different medications and was wondering if any of them or any combination of them could have created a false-positive? i take Mirtazapine, Buspirone, Quetiapine, Venlafaxine, Clonazepam, and Furosemide and also take 800mg Ibuprofen as needed. Any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated as this is a very serious matter.
Meghan
AskDocWeb: The only med you list that might show up as a false-positive for amphetamines is Quetiapine (Ketipinor) (Reference: 48).
Of course Clonazepam is a benzodiazepine so they would expect to see that. However, there are a few others that could also cause problems. Buspirone may show false positive for LSD (Reference: 47). Several sources say that Ibuprofen) could show up as a false positive for THC or marijuana (References: 1, 14, 16, 18, 20, 26, and 29). Venlafaxine hydrochloride (Effexor) may show false positive for PCP (Reference: 52).
Any time that you get what you believe to be a false positive on a drug test, you need to get a confirmation test, usually a GC/MS test. That will eliminate any false positives that might show up on the initial urine drug screen.

AskDocWeb: There is a list of possible causes for a false positive here. Neither fortesta nor inositol are on the list so you might check for other causes.
MY BABY IS ON THE LINE
Date: 7/16/2013
I am on Seroquel, Zoloft, Buspar, Xanax and as needed flexeral. I also was taking adepex(which I am no longer on) I also recently took some night time cold and flu drink. About a month ago I tested positive through a swab test for hydro morphine and morphine in addition to amemetaphines. Today I was given a urine test that came back positive for opiates. I have NOT used in over a year and MY BABY IS ON THE LINE HERE!!! How can I test positive for these things when I have not used!! PLEASE, if anyone has any answers or direction to give to me I really need it!!
Dianna
AskDocWeb: You need to know that false positives on initial urine tests do occur and the results should always be confirmed by more accurate testing. If you do not contest the results by getting a confirmation test (usually by GC/MS), you will likely be considered guilty of drug abuse.
Lorazapam
Date: 7/17/2013
I tested positive for THC but I do not smoke cannabis. I am currently taking anxiety medicine lorazapam. Could this have caused me to test positive for THC?
Leenita
AskDocWeb: Lorazapam (Lorazepam) has not been reported to cause false positives for THC however, there are about 70 other possible causes so check the big list.
St. John’s wort or 5-HTP?
Date: 7/17/2013
I have been supper depressed, anxious and not sleeping because of personal reasons. I started doing research on herbal supplements that help with all those things and found 5-HTP and St. John’s Wort both help. I started taking St. John’s Wort and it really seemed to help but I am getting ready to be drug tested on a regular basis and I have read multiple views saying that it does and does not show a false positive so I stopped taking it. Will St. John’s Wort or 5-HTP show a false positive?
Mikhael
AskDocWeb: St. John’s Wort contains at least 10 pharmacologically active constituents so the possibility exists that might show up on a drug test but as far as we know that has not been documented. It would be a good idea to tell the technician that you are using it when you take the test so that St. John’s wort can be screened out from the rest of the test.
There has been some confusion about whether or not 5-htp (5-Hydroxytryptophan) would show up on drug screens. This results from the fact that 5-HTP is peripherally metabolized to serotonin, which is then metabolized. This might cause a false positive test in tests looking for carcinoid syndrome. However this type of false positive relates to whether or not a person has a medical condition, not whether or not they are abusing drugs.
Gingko biloba
Date: 7/19/2013
Will gingko biloba cause me to have a false positive on a drug test?
Kael
AskDocWeb: Gingko biloba does not cause false positives on drug tests for drugs of abuse.
Mouth swabs?
Date: 7/21/2013
What level is considered positive for cocaine. I am on gabapentin and a mouth swab came up positive with a 0.2 and 0.4 level. I have always come up negative with urine swabs. How can this happen? I really do not understand. My psycologist hassaid that this has happened before in his practice, but I cannot find any documentation. Is it the mouth swabs?
David
AskDocWeb: Sorry David, most of our data is limited to urine tests. You might try looking up the manufacturer of the mouth swab test to see if they list cross-reactants.

According to the Merck Manuals, Seroquel may test false positive for amphetamines (Reference 48). For an extensive list of possible causes for a positive test see the big list.

Kidney infection
Date: 7/24/2013
A female friend of mine was given her 3rd driving under the influence due to a toxicology report, She had a severe kidney infection and is also on depression meds. She was also on antibiotics for the infection. I am not sure what she tested positive for but she has been convicted of 3rd dui when there was no alcohol involved or insinuated but could the antibiotics and or the kidney infection have anything to do with false readings?
Joe
AskDocWeb: Yes, both kidney infection and kidney disease may cause problems for those who take drug tests for drugs of abuse. Kidney disease is known to sometimes show false positive for cocaine (References: 3, 16, and 20). Kidney infection has shown false positives for amphetamines, THC, ecstasy, and opiates (References: 3, 16, and 21).
