Subj: Cipro and Zithromax
Date: 6/21/2006
Hello I have taken Cipro and Zithromax the night before a piss test, I don’t smoke marijauna but it came back with a high level of THC, could the meds cause false positive for that?
TRA
AskDocWeb: Cipro and Zithromax are not listed as causing false positives, sorry.
Subj: Ibuprofen
Date: 6/21/2006
Hello, I have read that it depends on which method taken the test it could be positive on marijuana because of ibuprofen, I got a friend who did him 2 test and he turned positive on one and negative on another one. He told me that he got 2 ibuprofen the night before the test (1000mg) could you tell me if this it can be true or which method it can cause false positive and which doesn’t…thank you very much.
Rafa
AskDocWeb: Ibuprofen can cause a false positive for marijuana if they use the EMIT test.
Subj: Albuterol?
Date: 6/26/2006
I was told by a couple of friends that albuterol in its liquid and inhaler form can screw up your drug screen, is that true or was I doing illegal activities when I’m sleeping?
R
AskDocWeb: We haven’t heard that it will cause a false positive, but we are still collecting information on false positive testing.
Subj: Nexium
Date: 6/28/2006
Can Nexium cause a false positive for THC
Pbilliar
AskDocWeb: No, Nexium has not been reported to cause false positives.
Subj: Positive for cocaine
Date: 6/28/2006
I have a friend that is coming up for cocaine. He just had eye surgery 16 days before the UA. We are not sure what could cause the false positive in the medications that they gave him. First is there anything that can cause a false positive 15 days later (426 ng), because we know cocaine is gone after 72 hours. And is there anything we can look for in the eye drops that would lead to the faults positive? was and is taking FML, zymar, quixin, percocet, ambien, mepergan fortis, alcaine (in eye drops), ibuprofen, xanax, and todradex. If you have any information that could help please let me know. Thank you, Jason
Jason
AskDocWeb: Percocet may test positive (not false) for opiates.
Subj: Questions about drug screen
Date: 6/28/2006
Hello, I had 2 questions. Does dilantin have false positives results in a urine drug screen? If so what is the minimum dose that shows up. Secondly, does lamictal show up and if so as what?
Evan
AskDocWeb: (answer revised 6/30/2011) Any dose can show up in a urine test for drugs. Dilantin is on the list as being able to cause a false positive. Lamictal may show up as a false positive for PCP.
Subj: Tested positive for THC
Date: 6/30/2006
I have given up marjania recently but I have been taking hydrocodone and nabumetone for a knee injury that I received and my tests came back positive for THC in it could these drugs cause that to be false positive.
Peki
AskDocWeb: Yes.
Subj: Tested positive for THC
Date: 7/1/2006
My husband was hurt at work and they did a drug test. It came back positive for THC. How can that be cause he doesn’t do any drugs. He has Hepatitis C and takes lots of herbs and he had a bad knee and took 800mg 4 times a day. He also takes a B complex. Do you know of any herbs that would make it read a false positive? Thank you
Deb
AskDocWeb: We suggest your husband take a complete list of the herbs (and medications he takes) to his doctor. Explain the situation to the doctor and ask for his help. If your husband’s job is in jeopardy, find out what kind of test the employer used along with the name of the laboratory that did the testing. You may be able to contact the laboratory directly and inquire about their accuracy.
Subj: Terrible shock
Date: 7/2/2006
I got a terrible shock when I was tested positive for amphetamines. All I did was took some medication for flu, and allergy. 1. Respolin 2p PRN x 1, Amoxycillin 500mg tds, Zyrtec, prednisolone and later another round of Erethromycin 400mg, Benadryl exp. Would this always lend me in positive drug test? I need these medications periodically. Thanks.
Ian
AskDocWeb: The medication you took for the flu could have caused false positive, depending on what it was. Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) has been reported to show up as false positives for Benzodiazepines, PCP, and Tricyclic Antidepressants 2-4 days after a single use. (Reference 45). If you are being drug tested, make sure to tell your doctor about the drug tests and that you do not want to take any drug that could cost you your job due to a false positive result.
Subj: Albuterol inhaler
Date: 7/4/2006
I was using an albuterol inhaler, nyquil and “sudafed,” all together 2-3 times daily. My inhaler, was more often. My baby’s marcomium test was positive for methamphetamines. Yet I was not at the same time or within 24 hours. How is this possible? And how do I prove this is not a result of street drug use? Before I loose my parental rights and my baby?
K.
AskDocWeb: It sounds like you were overdosing on Nyquil and Sudafed. We suggest you take a list of the drugs you are taking to your doctor and ask for his help, both for your situation and for the proper use of these products.
Subj: False positive
Date: 7/4/2006
I had a drug test come back for amphetamines and I am not taking anything on the list that they said could cause a false positive. I am pregnant and on vitamins, zantac and an albuterol inhaler twice a day – and I used it the morning of the test. I have not taken any cold meds… please advise! thanks
Maureen
AskDocWeb: The Zantac could be a problem. Ask if you could be re-tested for a confirmation that the results were actually yours and not someone else. You need to find out if they are relying on the cheap EMIT test process, which is far from accurate and a confirmation is needed from a GC/MS to prove your innocence. This test is more expensive but it’s virtually error free.
Subj: Ovarian cyst
Date: 7/6/2006
Can ovary cyst cause false result for genital herpes. If not can anything else?
Nikki
AskDocWeb: No an ovarian cyst cannot cause a false result for genital herpes. Sexual contact causes genital herpes. Go to your doctor and have an examination, test and bloodwork done.
Subj: Albuterol
Date: 7/6/2006
Could the medicine albuterol cause a false reading showing meth on a drug test?
Abby
AskDocWeb: No, Albuterol shouldn’t cause a false positive.
Subj: Tested positive for cocaine
Date: 7/11/2006
I am a mother of two, and a non drug user. I was recently turned in to DHS for drugs. The police raided my house, and found nothing; DHS did a hair sample on me and my kids. I came back positive for using cocaine, and one of my sons came back for exposure to cocaine. I heard that Amoxicillin can cause a false positive hair test. Is this true, as my son was on it at the time he was tested? Also I had oral surgery 3 months prior to this whole mess, and was on pain pills and antibiotics for 2 to 3 weeks, as well as was given Novocain. Could this be why I tested positive? I would really like some answers as DHS has taken my kids, and I feel no one really knows why we tested positive.
Sara
AskDocWeb: It is possible that they used the EMIT test which is known to produce false positives. And yes, Amoxicillin can cause a false positive on that cheap EMIT test.
Subj: Tested positive for cocaine
Date: 7/16/2006
I tested positive for cocaine, but had been recently treated for a kidney infection and take prozac daily. Did this cause the false positive?
Marie
AskDocWeb: Prozac is not on the list for causing a false positive but if you took an antibiotic that could cause a false positive.
Subj: Way to prove a negative?
Date: 7/18/2006
I came up positive for cocaine, though I have not used the drug in years. I have been taking amoxicillin and my drink of choice is Gin and Tonic. Is there any way to prove I did NOT do cocaine?
John
AskDocWeb: There is no way to prove a negative. You need to turn things around and realize that they have to prove that you did use cocaine. Find out where their proof came from what test they used. If it’s from a cheap EMIT test then you can contest it. Ask for a confirmation test using GC/MS. It’s more expensive but far more accurate.
Subj: Tested positive for cocaine
Date: 7/27/2006
I recently tested positive for cocaine. I have never used it. Could any of the following cause a false positive – chocolate, mocha drinks, iced tea, any fruits like peaches, blueberries, grapes or could methadone cause you to test positive for cocaine? I am really confused.
Carol
AskDocWeb: Methadone could have tested positive but not for cocaine.
Subj: False positive for cocaine
Date: 7/29/2006
From the site here I see that amoxicillian can cause a false positive for cocaine. Why am I being told by pharmacist and doctors amoxicillin can not cause a false positive. Is there any documented writings on this? I am facing being fired due to me taking amoxicillin before a drug screening and coming up positive.
Fred
AskDocWeb: The pharmacist and doctors that you talked to may not be aware that the old EMIT test is still being used. If a GC/MS test is used it would not of come up false positive. If you insist on a GC/MS test you may be able to prove your innocence.
Subj: Bronch-eze
Date: 8/2/2006
I was taking bronch-eze for my asthma and I failed a drug test for methamphetamine now my probation officer is trying to violate me. What can I do to stay out of jail? I have 4 kids that need me.
Rachel
AskDocWeb: Your doctor may be able to help you with this.
Subj: Energy drinks?
Date: 8/3/2006
I actually have a question. How do I find info on how I received a positive hair follicle test for cocaine when I haven’t used in almost five months? I have also had weekly u.a.’s since March 23rd, 2006 and everyone of them has been negative since I quit my cocaine usage? I paid for another hair follicle test at another location and another lab(Quest) since the false positive I got was from the lab that is also owned by the Counseling center that I attended for treatment. Is it possible that I drink energy drinks constantly could be the reason?
Christopher
AskDocWeb: You would need to take a close look at the ingredients in the energy drinks to find out if they could cause a false positive.
Subj: Amox and drug test
Date: 8/7/2006
Recently got a DUI don’t know test results yet but had taken amox for a boil on my side for a least 2 days prior was told that when they took my blood sample it could come back positive for cocaine is this true.
Chris
AskDocWeb: Amox may test positive for cocaine, sorry.
Subj: Baclofen
Date: 8/30/2006
My husband hurt his back and I take baclofen and gave him a couple and now he has to take a urine test in the morning for odot and can’t have anything in his system that he don’t have a prescription for so I was wondering how long baclofen stays in your system, thank you.
Corrina
AskDocWeb: It will still be in his system in the morning. It can stay in his system for 48 hours.
