Subj: Tested positive for cocaine
Date: 2/2/2008
I took a drug test that tested positive for cocaine. I was on robitussin with codiene, tramadol, sudafed, antibiotics, zoloft, phenagrin and take vitamins from gnc with no iron or shell fish. Could these cause my positive for cocaine?
Tanya
AskDocWeb: Yes, the list has just been updated.
Subj: Suboxone?
Date: 2/3/2008
I tested positive for opiates in a laboratory urinalysis. I take suboxone and have not taken any opiates. Is it possible to test positive for opiates while taking suboxone?
Terrie
AskDocWeb: Suboxone is an opioid or opiate, which means that it contains or is made from the narcotic opium.
Subj: Tested positive for Opiates
Date: 2/4/2008
I am a drug and alcohol counselor. I have a referral who has tested positive for Opiates(vicodin-rx’ed), Benzodiazepines (xanax-rx’ed) and Barbiturates. She states no use of Barbiturates EVER, She is taking Ambien, Vicodin, Xanax, Seroquel, Lamictal, Effexor by Rx. Is there any of these or combinations of these that COULD possibly cause a false positive for Barbs? Thanks,
Tami
AskDocWeb: Yes, Xanax contains benzodiazepines and Vicodin ES contains synthetic opiates.
Subj: Second hand smoke?
Date: 2/5/2008
Is it possible to fail a UA for THC with out smoking? Some of my friends smoked in the same room as me though.
W
AskDocWeb: If you were in the same room where multiple people were smoking then it is possible that you inhaled enough second hand smoke for it to show up on a drug test.
Subj: Zoloft
Date: 2/5/2008
I would like to know if Zoloft could give a false positive for Benzos in urine test. I do not use benzos and take 200mg a day of Zoloft. I was told it was positive for Benzo.
David
AskDocWeb: There has been some talk of that happening, see reference 31.
Subj: Tested positive for Oxycodone
Date: 2/5/2008
Dear AskDocWeb, I’ve been a Methadone maintenance program patient for just over two years now and I am currently on 100 mg of the drug, taken orally mixed in orange juice daily. Throughout my two years at the clinic, I have taken generic Tylenol-1s with 8 mg of Codeine almost every day, therefore my weekly urine samples are obviously turning up “dirty.” My habitual Tylenol-1 use is not a problem with the clinic doctors and staff. They are fine with this and everything’s been fine until today when I was told that my urine sample had tested positive for Oxycodone as well as my regular Codeine positive. I can tell you HONESTLY and SINCERELY that I did NOT take anything with Oxycodone in it. My current medications are as follows: Ranitidine, 150 mg twice daily… Zoloft, 100 mg twice daily… Clonazepam, 0.5 mg twice daily and a multivitamin (Centrum Forte) once a day. The clinic is aware of ALL of my medications, including my daily use of generic Tylenol-1s and the fact that I’m a smoker. I haven’t changed anything and I have been on these current medications for approximately the past two months and never before have I tested positive for Oxycodone. The urine tests are supervised and are done weekly. From the information that I’ve provided, is there anyway that a false-positive could have been rendered?.
Sincerely,
Jonathan
AskDocWeb: Clonazepam, Ranitidine, and Zoloft are all on the list of drugs that have been reported to cause false positives but not for showing up as Oxycodone.
Subj: Dilantin
Date: 2/6/2008
My husband takes dilantin and other headache medicines. He is on probation and gets drug tested monthly, he has not smoked marijuana but on his drug test THC and barbituate came the first drug tests he has taken so far, needless to say he did get arrested this past time for the THC but he doesn’t smoke marijuana. Can dilantin cause a false positive for THC they already know it can for barbituate???
Kelli
AskDocWeb: No, that has not been reported to happen.
Subj: Diluted UA?
Date: 2/6/2008
My daughter is currently involved in CPS and was 1 week from getting overnight visits with her 2 year old daughter. She had been very sick and was put on prednisone, flonage, Phenergan, and amoxil 500 mg. She drank about 1 1/2 qt of water and a diet coke before giving her UA. Her case worker told her it was diluted and now she is having problems getting her daughter back. Could the amount of water she drank and the meds she was taking cause a diluted UA? She is only 5 feet tall and about 130 lbs. Thanks,
Karen
AskDocWeb: It sounds like there is more to this than just a diluted UA. What drug did she test positive for?
Subj: Drug test showed positive for THC and Cannabanoids
Date: 2/6/2008
I recently had surgery and was recovering under the medications of Oxycontin, Oxycodone, Advil and Phenegran. I just lost my job due to a drug test that showed a positive for THC and Cannabanoids. It was a ten drug band yet the pain pills did not show, just THC. I’m appealing it, but it is hard to prove. Can you offer any information or a person that could testify what would cause this false positive. This will black ball me from my profession, one that I love very much. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
GM
AskDocWeb: If you go to court, you need an expert witness, someone who can provide unbiased and accurate information in a way that a jury can understand. In this case an expert witness is a qualified forensic toxicologist who can perform an independent review of the data. A forensic toxicologist can evaluate the data, procedures, and records to interpret the test results. Finding a toxicologist is no easy matter. Your local poison information center probably has one on staff but if it is like the one we have here, they don’t do outside work. It would be nice if you could pick up a phonebook and look them up in the yellow pages but there is no listing toxicology or toxicologist. You might try your nearest university hospital for a referral.
Subj: Hair test for cocaine
Date: 2/6/2008
My son tested positive through a hair test for cocaine use and was told he is a frequent user. He has severe allergies and the doctor put him on a two month supply of amoxil/Clavul 875 MG/125MG. He was tested during the time he had just finished taking this med and has just started taking Cephalexin 500 MG. Also using a Veramyst Nasal Spray and Allegra D 12 hour pills. Could any of these have caused a false positive for cocaine? They want to put him out of school for this and he only has three months to graduate. Any help would be appreciated!

Subj: Second-hand marijuana smoke
Date: 2/6/2008
Can second-hand marijuana smoke lingering around a room, cause a person to test positive for marijuana?
George
AskDocWeb: Yes, marijuana smoke is readily absorbed by hair.
Subj: Positive for THC and opiates
Date: 2/7/2008
I recently took a urine drug screen for my parole officer and it came up positive for THC and opiates. I haven’t did any drugs at all. I am on prescription medication such as seroquel, benztropine, neurotin, and amitripyline. Could anyone please tell me how this could happen?

Subj: False positive of cannibanoids?
Date: 2/8/2008
I recently took a urine screen for probation and it came back positive for cannibanoids, marijuana. I haven’t smoked marijuana since 2004 and don’t understand how this result is possible. I’ve read many of the postings from many sites but I would also like a response concerning myself. What can specifically cause a false positive of cannibanoids?
Eric

Subj: Positive for benzodiazepines
Date: 2/8/2008
I came up positive for benzodiazepines at an outpatient drug program. I haven’t taken Valium well over a month, took a 10mg over 4 weeks ago, and they are aware of it. Before that- Valium free for 4 months. I am shocked over this. It was painful to be physically addicted to those things. I test every week and have for a total of 6 months. In the last week I used Midol and Advil for obvious reasons (menstrual cramps). I am awaiting lab results but can’t figure out why I’d come up positive at all. Any idea?

Subj: Taking many products
Date: 2/9/2008
I have been taking many products from GNC, such as Syntha-6, Trac Extreme NO, nitrix, cell mass, professional strength creatine, and ripped fuel. The urinalysis they do test for mainly THC, cocaine, and opiates, but on the “other” testing they can test for many different things, we can’t even have testosterone enhancers, pheromones, or any thing like that that is legal to buy even so I was wondering if I could fail a piss test from any of these products.

AskDocWeb: Obviously the more products you take the more chance of problems but nothing you mentioned is on our list.
Subj: Multi-vitamins or Protein Shakes?
Date: 2/11/2008
My boyfriend has been taking mulitviatims and Protein shakes with high potency. He went to get enrolled in a drug treatment program. There he was tested, we waited for 10 min and the lady in the front office said the test came out positive for opiates. We were shocked because he has been clean for over a year. The test was not done in a lab it was like a home test. So his probation officer thinks that he was using, and we think it has to be either a false positive test since there test are not taken to the lab anything could of gone wrong. Or his multivitaims or Protein Shakes. Can you please help you determine weather the vitamins had something to do with it. Thank you so much.
Confused
AskDocWeb: No vitamins have been reported to cause a false positive for opiates on drug tests. You might check the ingredients in that Protein Shake against this list.
