Subj: Failed a urinalysis test for marijuana
Date: 5/16/2008
I’m on workers compensation and I failed a urinalysis test for marijuana. I have been workers comp for three years and have yet to date have never felt a urinalysis tests. The current medications that I am on is hydrocodone and ibuprofen, Xanax, protonics, fexrail, morphine sulfate, Levaquin, and some natural vitamins to. Can any of medication cause me to have a positive urinalysis? If so I need a legal basis to stand on. I am my non-smoker. Work worked as a first-line supervisor in the construction field for 10 years. Tested many times and never once had my urinalysis showed positive for THC.
Shane
AskDocWeb: It is easier and less expensive to get a GC/MS confirmation test than it is to mount a legal defense. The test results of a GC/MS confirmation test will show if the urinalysis is a false positive or not.
Subj: Failed a drug test for amphetamines
Date: 5/16/2008
I failed a drug test for amphetimines. I have been taking some sort of sudafed, all the time I have the worst alergies, I well use either the bensadrik inhaler or the vick inhaler depending on if I stay at my girls. The only pain meds I take are also over the counter and that is neproxin? Don’t know if its spelled right, but I take them all of the time for my knee. The only other thing I can think of is I occasionally take some samples my girlfriend brings home from work for new alergy meds don’t know any names. Drink creatine shakes and that is all I can think of. Would that test posative for meth or ampetamines (not sure about any of the spelling.
MSD
AskDocWeb: You may find that taking samples of new allergy medications without a doctor’s prescription could prove to be dangerous in several ways. She could loose her job, you could have a bad reaction, fail a drug screen, etc.
Subj: Ambien CR
Date: 5/19/2008
I failed a drug screening ppa is ambien cr on this list?
Deborah
AskDocWeb: No.
Subj: Failed for benzodiazapen
Date: 5/20/2008
My husband took a urine test for parole, and failed it for benzodiazapen, the odd thing is the only medicines he has taken are vicodin and bactrim. We are still looking to find out what could have made his test fail, because he has not taken anything with benzodiazapen in it that we are aware of, certainly not any prescription or illegal drugs for sure. If anyone knows of anything that could have caused this, please help. My husband is now in jail for it and he did not take anything other than his own prescriptions.
Christal
AskDocWeb: According to reference 60 Bactrim may test positive for benzodiazepines.
Subj: Tested positive for cocaine
Date: 5/20/2008
I have recently been told that I have tested positive for cocaine. I take venlafaxine 300mg daily and occasionally Pepcid or Zantac. I see on your site that venlafaxine is known to test false pos for PCP. Can this be true for cocaine?
LASHON
AskDocWeb: We have not heard of that happening.
Subj: False positive urine dip analysis
Date: 5/20/2008
I just had a false positive urine dip analysis for benzodiazepines. I know that I haven’t taken anything. Could you give me the list that could come up for false positives for this. I am on 40 mg of citalopram and that’s it. Please help.
Carrie
AskDocWeb: Most anti anxiety medications can test positive for benzodiazepines (Ref: 3).
Oxaprozin (Ref: 3, 18, 34), Zoloft (Ref: 31), and prescription sleeping pills may also test positive for Benzodiazepines (Ref: 3, 20)
A number of drugs contain benzodiazepines and will test positive but these test results will be a true positive. Here is a partial list:
- Alprazolam (Ref: 18)
- Ativan® (Ref: 18)
- Chinese herb pills (Ref: 32)
- Chlordiazepoxide (Ref: 18)
- Clonazepam (Ref: 18)
- Cows head pills (Chinese herb) (ref: 32)
- Dalmane® (Ref: 18)
- Diazepam (generic name for Valium) (Ref: 18, 20, 26)
- Dormonocet® (Ref: 18)
- Flurazepam (Ref: 18)
- Klonopin® (Ref: 18)
- Libritab® (Ref: 18)
- Librium® (Ref: 18)
- Limbitrol® (Ref: 18)
- Loprazolam (Ref: 18)
- Lorazepam c(Ref: 18)
- Miracle herb pills (Chinese herb) (ref: 32)
- Oxazepam (Ref: 18)
- Potentsex pills (Chinese herb) (ref: 32)
- Rivotril® (Ref: 18)
- Serax® (Ref: 18)
- TriazolamHalcion® (Ref: 18)
- Valium® (Ref: 18, 20)
- Valrelease® (Ref: 18)
- Xanax® (Ref: 18)
There may be other drugs that can test positive for benzodiazepines but we only have references for the above.
Subj: Detomidine hydrochloride and Acepromazine
Date: 5/22/2008
Hi, A couple of days ago I took a voluntary drug screen (urine test)as I am applying for a horse training license. I don’t drink, smoke and have never ever taken or tried drugs in my life, so as you can imagine I was shocked when the result came back that I tested positive to ‘Benzodiazepines’. I have never ever heard of that before, however I have done some research on the net and found it is the group of drugs used in sleeping pills, valium etc. I have been quite upset wondering how the hell this came to be in my system. The lady on the phone said maybe a drink had been spiked, but I don’t go out. The only thing that just came to mind is I clip horses for a living and administer sedatives to them, and occasionally a few drops spill onto my hands. My question is can those drugs be absorbed in the skin and if so would those drugs (detomidine hydrochloride and Acepromazine) show up as a Benzodiazepines in a test? Please help!
Louise
AskDocWeb: Detomidine hydrochloride is poorly absorbed through the skin however contact with Acepromazine is another matter. Wash contact from splashes on the skin and eyes immediately as it may be absorbed through the skin and mucous membranes. As for the possibility that the tranquilizer Acepromazine might test positive for benzodiazepines, we were unable to find a reference for that.
Subj: Stadol?
Date: 5/22/2008
Can you tell me is there any drug medications that can make a false positive reading for stadol?
Sarah
AskDocWeb: Sorry, no, maybe a reader will be able to help out here.
Subj: Amoxicillin and drug screening
Date: 5/22/2008
I was taking amoxicillin and had to go take a drug screen and tested positive for cocaine. The doctor said it showed up as a high level. The prescription was my wife’s and I took what she had left for a mild sinus infection. Would this antibiotic show up as a high level of cocaine in my urine?
Jeff
AskDocWeb: Yes, according to reference numbers 13, 16, 18, 20, 21, 26, and 29 amoxicillin may cause a false positive for cocaine.
Subj: Invalid result?
Date: 5/23/2008
My test results came back positive for cocaine and invalid result. I am taking amoxcillan, hydrocodone, and wellbutrin, could any one of these medications caused my results to be positive/invalid? Thanks,
Vince
AskDocWeb: Yes, it is possible to get an invalid result from a urine drug test. This is why it is important to get a GC/MS confirmation test, to expose false positives.
Subj: False positive for LSD?
Date: 5/24/2008
My brother is in prison. My husband and I went to visit. They some sort of test where they wipe the palm of your hands with a cloth and run it though a machine for testing. Mine was fine. My husband’s came back positive for LSD. He has never used any illegal drugs. However, he takes Benicar, Allopurinol, and Celebrex. Could these prescription drugs show a false positive for LSD?
Marsha
AskDocWeb: The only drugs we have found that may cause a false positive for LSD are:
- Amitriptyline (Ref: 3)
- Artane (Ref: 3)
- Bentyl® (Ref: 3, 18)
- Bromocription (Ref: 3)
- Cafergot® (Ref: 3, 18)
- Efotamine (Ref: 3)
- Elavil (Ref: 3, 26, 29)

- Hydergine (Ref: 3)
- Lisuride (Ref: 3)
- Lysergol (Ref: 3, 18)
- Methysergiside (Ref: 3)
- Triprolidine (Ref: 3, 18)
- Wigraine® (Ref: 3, 18)

Subj: Waiting to get my children back
Date: 5/26/2008
I tested positive for PCP, prior to this I had no idea as to what PCP was, I am now waiting to get my children back, the only drug in my system was Lortab 10/650, which don’t show up at all. I showed them my Rx, waited, expecting with all of the faith in the world that opiates would be there & nothing else. I am desperately trying to solve this, any help would be appreciated.
Wanda
AskDocWeb: As much as we would like to help, we just don’t have an answer in this case. Did you get a GC/MS confirmation test?
Subj: Benadryl
Date: 5/27/2008
My client had a positive drug test for benzos. He is saying that he was taking Benedryl. Does that cause a false positive?
Joleen
AskDocWeb: Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) has been reported to show up as false positives for Benzodiazepines, PCP, and Tricyclic Antidepressants 2-4 days after a single use. (Reference 45).
Subj: We are devastated
Date: 5/27/2008
My husband recently took a UA for his job. We all knew he was in the clear, so we didn’t worry about it. He has used marijuana in the past, and I mean like a year ago, but the test came back positive. We are both devastated. They want him to take another one in a week. He has had a severe cold and has been taking Nyquil, cough drops, Tylenol Severe Cold Multi-symptom and Excedrin. Could any of these make him test positive for marijuana and what are the next steps we take when they ask him to come back for another sample?
Michelle
AskDocWeb: Any of these drugs may show up as positive on a drug test. This next test will be the second test and they probably will not do a third test. If he knows he may be tested at any time he should be very careful with what over the counter medications he takes for colds or anything else. In any case if it comes back positive, get a GC/MS confirmation test.
Subj: Antibiotics test positive for benzodiazepines?
Date: 5/28/2008
I am a drug/alcohol counselor in Orange County. I have come across a number of Positive tests for benzodiazepines for clients that are taking antibiotics. More specifically, sulfamethoxazole. Is this possible?
Layla
AskDocWeb: We know that antibiotics have tested positive for both heroin and cocaine so testing positive for benzodiazepines would not be a surprise.
Subj: I keep coming up positive for cocaine
Date: 5/30/2008
I am a recovering heroin addict out on bail. I do take a number of prescription medicines and I keep coming up positive for cocaine. THE MEDS that I am taking are temazepam, lisinopril hydrochloride, doxicycline, xanax, norvasc, prednisone and some type of little inhaler to quit smoking. It has happened twice so I paid for a retest. Any comment? I have not used cocaine in 20 years. Scared to death.
Jan
AskDocWeb: None of those drugs have been reported to show up as cocaine on a urine drug test. Testing a second time with the same test that produced a false positive is quit likely to produce the same result again. I think that if you replace that retest request with a GC/MS confirmation test you should be okay.
