Subj: Information on false positives
Date: 8/31/2008
Can you direct me to a resource that I can print out and use to provide information on false positives for THC, etc. I know that Motrin causes a false positive in the urine for THC, but I need to print information out to back what I am saying. Thanks so much
Robyn
AskDocWeb: The sources that report Motrin showing up as false positives for THC in urine drug tests are listed on this page (See references 1, 3, 16, 18, 20, 26, and 29)

You claim that weight loss cannot produce a false positive. Yet I have found that THC is stored in fat cells, and if you lose weight very quickly and take a drug test, THC can produce low nanograms. Also, with weight loss programs, it appears that the ingredients of vitamins can produce false positive for THC. What are your comments on these two issues?
Julia
AskDocWeb: What we claim is that we can’t find a source that will document your claim that weight loss might produce a false positive. If you have a source for that claim we will publish it. We have three sources that claim vitamin B2 can cause false positives for THC (See references 3, 16, and 18).
Subj: Wellbutrin?
Date: 9/2/2008
I am wondering if Wellbutrin can cause a false positive for benzodiazepenes.
Brian
AskDocWeb: Wellbutrin has shown up on urine tests as a false positive for Amphetamines but not benzodiazepines.
Subj: Ambien?
Date: 9/4/2008
If I have been taken ambien once or twice to help me sleep. Can this give me a false positive for any chemicals? If so can you give me the names please?
Craig
AskDocWeb: No false positives have been reported with the use of Ambien.
Subj: Tested positive for THC
Date: 9/8/2008
I have a big problem, I’m in the US ARMY and recently tested positive for THC right before my honeymoon, problem is that I dont smoke pot and have not for many many years. I have been trying to plea my case for about a month now, they even have my wife and I seperated from each other, while they put me on extra duty. This has been a real headache for us both. I am currently taking midrin, naproxen, topamax, aleive and flexrill. This has ruined my career almost and have nowhere to turn. Will any of these things cause my urine to come back posotive and if so is there any proof I could get from medical journals to help clear my name… Thanks so much.
David
AskDocWeb: It may have been the Naproxen (Aleve) as urine drug tests have been reported to sometimes show a false positive for THC. (See references 1, 3, 16, and 21) In our opinion it would be easier to get a GC/MS confirmation test to rule out a false positive than it would be to prove that the positive was false.
Subj: Nyquil?
Date: 9/8/2008
I was recently administered a mandatory drug test and mine came back posotive for Ethanol, is there any way that Nyquil could have caused that?
Jim
AskDocWeb: Others have asked about this and alcohol is listed as one of the inactive ingredients in NyQuil. Unfortunately the manufacturer doesn’t list how much of their product is made up of alcohol. So far we’ve not been able to document this possibility.
Subj: Percocet
Date: 9/10/2008
My husband has been going to pain management for 3 years. He went to his doc this month and there was a nurse that was taking urine test so my husband took a urine test it turn up positive for methidone. My husband dont do any drugs he dont even take the meds that the doc gives him percocet how does this happen. He in the middle of a lawsuit his injuries are from a car accident.
Betty
AskDocWeb: It sometimes happens because urine drug tests are not perfect and a small percentage will come back positive for something that isn’t there. Unfortunately percocet will test positive for opiates and that is not a false positive.
Subj: Lasix 20mg?
Date: 9/10/2008
Will taking lasix 20mg once a day cause me to fail a county probation urine test?
Lynn
AskDocWeb: No problems have been reported with Lasix on urine tests.
Subj: Positive for benzodiazepines
Date: 9/12/2008
I am in a sober living facillity. I am taking 100mg of Zoloft and I am testing positive for Benzodiazipines (sp), I was given Librium in Detox but that was a month ago. How long does Librium stay in your system and could the Zoloft be responsible for the positive reading for Bonzodiazepines?
Chris
AskDocWeb: The half-life of Librium is 24 to 48 hours so that was not a problem. On the other hand Zoloft has been reported to show up as a false positive for benzodiazepines.
Subj: Positive for downers
Date: 9/15/2008
I was tested at a maintenance clinic last Friday and I tested positive for downers they said xanax, which I don’t take, I take toprol and celexa, can those cause false positives?
Dillon
AskDocWeb: Sorry Dillon, neither has been reported to cause a false positive.
Subj: Tested positive for PCP
Date: 9/15/2008
My husband tested positive for PCP but insists he has not taken it. He is a very sick man with gastroparesis and is on many meds: zofran, ativan, cymbalta, nexium and phenergan and demerol which is mixed in the pharmacy so he can use it as a liquid through his j-tube. Can any of these cause a positive result?
RoseAnn
AskDocWeb: None of those have been reported to show up as a false positive for PCP although Ativan contains benzodiazepines, Demerol tests positive for opiates, and Phenergan-D is also on the list.
Subj: Vicodin
Date: 9/16/2008
I gave my ex, who I suspected of being back on heroin or crack cocaine, as he has been several times, a 5 panel drug screen from my work we use on our employees. He failed for opiates. He says he takes vicodin and I’m aware of that as he has for his teeth and kidneys for some time. He is on probation and says he tests weekly with clean results. I tested him after several heroin and shooting of crack cocaine incidents because I have began seeing the same signs again. I have been told vicodin would not show a positive on opiates, but heroin would show as one. Can you please advise. I have 2 children involved who I will not leave there unattended until I have some peace of mind on this. Thanks.
Amanda
AskDocWeb: Vicodin ES does contain synthetic opiates but we would error on the side of safety.
Subj: Topamax
Date: 9/16/2008
Topamax… will it cause a false positive for amphetamines?
Blondi2569
AskDocWeb: No false positives have been reported from the use of Topamax.
Subj: Zantac?
Date: 9/17/2008
I got a false positive on a drug test and I have not used cocaine for two years. Can zantac cause a false positive on a urine test for cocaine?
Steve
AskDocWeb: Zantac has been reported to show up as a false positive for Amphetamines but not cocaine.
Subj: Morphine 6 test
Date: 9/17/2008
This is a life altering question. My brother just went to jail for a probation violation. He is a crack addict. He tested positve for heroin. He was taking percacet, diludid and owycodone for an injury. He did not test positve until he was taking these drugs. The probation department did a morphine 6 test which they say breaks down the drugs and is 100% correct. I know he did not do heroin. Is this possible? Please we-mail me back asap. Thank you for any help you can give. This can save a mans life.
Joyce
AskDocWeb: Sorry Joyce, we were unable to find anything on the accuracy of the Morphine 6 test.
Subj: Tested positive for propoxyphene
Date: 9/18/2008
I just tested positive for propoxyphene on a drug test that is going to severely impact my life and several other’s lives as well. Thing is, I haven’t taken any propoxyphene or anything else that wasn’t prescribed to me. I was sick when I took the drug screen and was on several meds at the time and it simply has to be a mistake. Please tell me if any of these could have caused this false positive. Hydramet cough syrup, Amoxicillin, Benadryl – Diphenhydramine, Tylenol Cold and Sinus, Nyquil, as well as several other over-the-counter meds I can’t recall. I cannot be found “dirty”. It will ruin so many lives. What can I do to convince the MRO I am clean?!
Gilbert
AskDocWeb: About the only thing you can do is get a GC/MS confirmation test. That will either confirm or deny the urine test. Amoxicillin, Diphenhydramine, Nyquil, and Tylenol are all on the list. Also check to see if your cough syrup contain Dextromethorphan (DXM). Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) has been reported to show up as false positives for Benzodiazepines, PCP, and Tricyclic Antidepressants 2-4 days after a single use. (Reference 45).
Subj: Neurontin or zoloft?
Date: 9/18/2008
Can neurontin or zoloft give a false positive test for benzodiazepines?
Al
AskDocWeb: Zoloft has been reported to show up as benzodiazepine on some EMIT urine tests.
Subj: References?
Date: 9/18/2008
On the False Positives pages, you list things like “(Ref: 3, 11, 18).” Where do I find these references?
AskDocWeb: They are on the Reference page.
Subj: Multivitamin
Date: 9/19/2008
For an occupational drug screen, would a multivitamin (centrum a to zinc) cause any problems such as a false positive? The color was green and the nurse said she could tell I take vitamins.
Will
AskDocWeb: Multivitamins have not been reported to cause any problems with drug screens.
Subj: Flomax
Date: 9/18/2008
My boyfriend and I go to a methadone clinic. We both have had clean urine since we have been going there. My boyfriend recently had been prescribed flomax for his inlarged prostate. Needless to say he had taken his UA for the month. The test came back positive for cocaine. I had asked a couple Pharmasist if it was possible for flomax to come back as a false positive for cocaine. They all said yes that it could. I would like to know what you think about this situation. Thank You,
Linda
AskDocWeb: Sorry Linda, we were not able to document that assertion.
