Subj: Atripla?
Date: 2/18/2009
Does Atripla show any false positives on a drug screen?
Jason
AskDocWeb: Yes, according to http://www.drugs.com/pro/atripla.html, “False-positive urine cannabinoid test results have been observed in non-HIV-infected volunteers receiving efavirenz when the Microgenics Cedia DAU Multi-Level THC assay was used for screening.” That is a possible false positive for marijuana or THC. If you have to take a drug test, you may want to tell the person collecting the sample that you take Atripla so that they can make allowance for that. Atripla (generic name: efavirenz, emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) is used for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults.
Subj: Suboxone
Date: 2/19/2009
I am on suboxone and I took a 5 panel drug screen and failed it for cocaine I haven’t touched it in over 30 days.
Angie
Subj: Bactrim
Date: 2/19/2009
I think you need to add Bactrim to your lists because there have been 15 cases on this website alone as well as me getting false positive results for benzos.
Todd
AskDocWeb: The problem with that is that there are no professional references that can be quoted as saying that it does happen. If you find one let us know and we’ll add it.
Subj: Tested positive for cyclobenzaprine
Date: 2/20/2009
A friend of mine tested positive for cyclobenzaprine. They do not take anything other than a multi vitamin and a muscle inhancer. Is there anything that could have made them test positive falsely?
Amanda
AskDocWeb: Sorry Amanda, there is nothing on the list for cyclobenzaprine.
Subj: Positive on urinalysis?
Date: 2/20/2009
I want to know if the following prescribed drugs could cause a positive on urinalysis. Lisinopril 20mg; Amlodipine Besylate 10mg; Simvastatin 20mg. and a water pill thank you
R.L.
AskDocWeb: None of those have been reported to cause a positive on urinalysis.
Subj: Protonix
Date: 2/20/2009
From March to December of 2007 I took Protonix. Twice I was drug tested in an emergency room about seven months apart. The first time I only found out because I was gathering my medical records. I tested positive for THC and opiates. I understand the opiates. I am on pain medication, but I do not smoke marijuana, never go near it, and actually am against its use. I read on the prescription information sheet for the Protonix about a false positive being possible but never thought it would happen to me. The second time it happened I told a nurse about the previous experience and asked that he make sure that a confirmation test was run to make sure that didn’t happen again. Well, he not only didn’t forward the information to the ER doc, he also never recorded that I took Protonix. I immediately went off the medication when my private doctor asked if I used marijuana. I called the hospital both times and basically was blown off. No one even considered I was telling the truth. Not only that, I have told several doctors since then and they were completely unaware that this could happen. Trust me it can happen and did happen.

Subj: False positive for HSV?
Date: 2/22/2009
Is their any product that will cause a false positive when having the hsv2 test. I have tested positive for HSV2 and HSV1. Married for 12 years and my husband has tested positive for both. I just cannot believe I have it. Is there any way that the test could be incorrect? My results were as follows: Hsv 1 greater than 5.00 Hsv 2 4.33.
Tonya
AskDocWeb: You could have the test repeated but the chance of a lab error involving HSV is extremely low.
Subj: False positive for THC?
Date: 2/22/2009
I had a false positive with the VA clinic. I had taken epidrine for breathing problem, advil, and a list of other breathing meds. Could this of caused the false positive using the enzyme immunoassay system. My THC level quoted was 61? Thanks in advance,
Michael
AskDocWeb: We found several references that state Advil may show up as a false positive for THC or Marijuana (See references 1, 14, 16, 18, 20, 26, and 29)
Subj: False positive for Benzodiazepines?
Date: 2/23/2009
I had a false positive urine test for Benzodiazepines, but I take clonidine, rozerem, and guanficine. Are any of these the cause of the false positive on the urine test?
Ryan
AskDocWeb: Sorry Ryan, none of those are on the list.
Subj: Hydrocodone
Date: 2/25/2009
I am trying to find out if I took 4 hydrocodone over a period of 2 days 2 months ago, would this show up in a hair follicle test? Very important, can you give me an answer? Thank you.
Sharon
AskDocWeb: Sorry Sharon, the information here only applies to urine testing.
Subj: Kidney and diabetic problems
Date: 2/25/2009
My husband has been going to a pain managment Dr for several years. On his visit Friday, they did a UA drug screen and he tested positive for cocaine. He swears he has not used anything other than the Dr prescribed meds. 2 years ago he had his left kidney removed due to cancer. He does not take any further treatment for that. He is a diabetic and is on glyburide and Priolosec for stomach problems. He has also taken NyQuil recently. This is the 2nd time that he’s tested positive for cocaine and 1 doctor dismissed him because she stated there’s no way a false positive could be produced. The current Dr sent his UA to an outside lab and are awaiting the results. If this comes back as positive what can we do?
BETH
AskDocWeb: You can insist that the result be confirmed with a GC/MS test. In future testing situations we would explain the history of false positives and make sure they understand that no result will be accepted until it is verified with a GC/MS confirmation test.
Subj: Celexa
Date: 2/27/2009
I do not believe I should have to share my SSRI use with a prospective employer. If I do keep it to myself – or even if I do not, is Celexa going to interfere with urinalysis?
Dave
AskDocWeb: Celexa has not been reported to cause any problems with employer drug tests.
Subj: Tested positive for benzodiazepine
Date: 2/28/2009
I recently tested positive for benzodazepine. I have not taken this substace knowingly. I am presently taking prescription antibiotics Bactrin(generic is smz/tmp) and clindamycin 1%(topical). Also clarinex and have taken a otc equate brand sinus congestion med. Could these cause false positives?
Sundi
AskDocWeb: The closest we can come to finding a reference was a report from one victim of a false positive that the OTC equate brand sinus congestion med has the same ingredients as Maximum Strength Tylenol Sinus gelcaps, which has shown up as a false positive for Amphetamines (Ref: 3, 18)
Subj: Child taken away
Date: 3/3/2009
I just got my child taken away from CPS due to a positive methamfetamine test and a seperate cocaine test. I do not use drugs. I am currently on Aderall, percocet, vicodin, soma, rozeram, klonopin, at times Imitrex, sudafed and tylenol PMs. Can any of these cause a false positive for cocaine, I know the Adderall, and sudafed can cause methemphatamine result. Please help.
Diana
AskDocWeb: Yes, most of those drugs are on the list.
Subj: Abilify and Prozac
Date: 3/3/2009
My daughter takes Abilify and Prozac for depression. She is required to take urine tests periodically. He recent urine exam tested positive for Zanex. Could there be asnything with the current medication to make this occur?
Danielle
AskDocWeb: Neither of those drugs should show up as Zanax but Prozac (Fluoxetine Hydrochloride) has sometimes shown up as a false positive for amphetamines (Ref: 31).
Subj: Tested positive of amphetamine
Date: 3/3/2009
My husband is on antibuse and took a test today and was told he tested positive of amphetamine. He was recently in the hospital and was given nitro, moraphine and takes an asprin dailey and an over the counter acid reducer. He took an acid reducer in the hospital 2 times a day for 4 days. Could anything I named give a false postive. He also has taken Iburprofen 800.
Sheila
AskDocWeb: It may have been the acid reducer. Some may shown up as a false positive for Amphetamines.
Subj: Kidney infection
Date: 3/4/2009
Hello, I too am a methadone patient. I went on methadone 1 year ago after being diagnosed with Kidney cancer and was on oxys for almost 8 months. The cancer is thankfully gone and I am working on getting off the meth too. Last week I came up dirty- for the first time- for cocaine use. I haven’t done coke since the 90’s. I asked them to do a confirmation test and it came back again with benzoylecgonine. I don’t take any other meds except occasionally nasal spray when I am stuffed up. My concern is that after doing some research online I have found that possible kidney infection could be the cause. I have asked my clinic if they would do the test to check my kidney function and I am waiting for their answer. They think I am full of S%^$. I also drink a ton of tea, some of which are a bit strange from my Lebanese girlfriend. I have read that some tea still may have the cocoa leaf in them. Is this true? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Chris
AskDocWeb: Our first though is a basic rule that you may consider adopting: If you are subject to drug testing then avoid drinking or eating anything with unknown ingredients. There are thousands of different combinations of ingredients for tea around the world. It doesn’t seem like it is worth taking the chance on an unknown tea.
Subj: Anything to worry about?
Date: 3/4/2009
I recently had a drug test, both urine and blood. I am on prescribed hydrocodone, and they are testing me for hydromorphone. Do I have anything to worry about? I have been reading that the hydrocodone can cause false positives for hydromorphone? Thanks!
dave
AskDocWeb: We wouldn’t worry because false positives only happen in a small percentage of tests. Just be ready to request a GC/MS confirmation test if a problem does show up.
