Subj: Tested positive for cocaine
Date: 1/2/2007
Need response ASAP. Husband tested positive for cocaine on a urine test for probation. He currently takes hydrocodone, valium, and predisone for a herniated disc. Can this cause false positive. Could receive jail time need response within 5 days.

Stacy

AskDocWeb: Sorry Stacy, we are an archive website. That means we collect user feedback for future reference. We just aren’t set up for an instant response. For anyone else in that type of situation, we suggest getting a statement from your doctor as to what drugs were taken, and the possibility of those drugs causing a false positive.

Subj: Foods at risk for false positives
Date: 1/5/2007
I am not writing in about a review. I happen to come across your web site while I was doing some research about False Positive UA’s. I am in need of some help and am hoping that someone could help me. I am currently taking twice a week UA and have been for about 5 months now. For the past 2 months I have gotten 1 false positive a month for opiates. I have not used anything. I am wondering if there are at risk food that could be the cause other than poppy seeds. I am currently having a hair sample test done to prove that I have not used. What is your thought on Hair follicle testing. Is it truly 100% accurate as they say? Please help I am at a loss and have been racking my brain over what could have caused these False Positives. One more thought I have taken Midol a couple of times, would this have caused it? Please help with your advise.

Sarah

AskDocWeb: Midol could cause a false positive. As far as foods go, prickly lettuce and blue lettuce also pose a risk. The hair follicle test is supposed to be 100% correct.

Subj: False Positive?
Date: 1/5/2007
I am on probation so I am subject to drug tests. I am prescribed Depakote for bi-polar disorder, Provigil for sleep disorder, and Levothyroxin for Hypothyroidism. Do you know if any of these medications can cause false positives?

John

AskDocWeb: We have no record of those drugs causing a false positive. Good luck.

Subj: Tested positive for Cocaine
Date: 1/9/2007
I am in the Military and recently was told I tested positive for Cocaine. I am in the medical field and have 16 great years and would do nothing to jeopardize my career. The day before I had the UA done. I went to the hospital and they gave me Rocephin injected with Xylocaine and they crushed up a Zithromax pill(s) and had me drink that as well.

Subj: Rocephin with Xylocaine and Zithromax
Date: 1/10/2007
I was given a UA the week before Christmas and 3 weeks later they came back and told me I had tested positive for Cocaine! I have been in the military for 16 years and just re-upped for another 6 and this came as a total shock. So I am fighting for my career here! I was given 250 mg of Rocephin with Xylocaine and 1 gram of Zithromax crushed in liquid and swallowed. This was done the day before we had the UA. I have NEVER in my life taken any controlled substances and the occasions that I did, I had been given Percacet and then Vicodin and they make me very sick and I have sensitivity to Novacaine as well. With the mixture of these meds can there be a false positive? Some say there is no possible way and others say maybe… PLEASE HELP!

Wiley

AskDocWeb: These meds are not listed as causing a false positive but we would ask them to confirm the test using GC/MS test, it’s more reliable, but more expensive.

Subj: Methyldopa
Date: 1/11/2007
I am a nurse and have been trying to find out if methyldopa will show up in a drug screen. I have a patient in a drug rehab who has been testing positive for amphetamines. Since she stopped taking it, she is negative. Can you provide some info on this. She desperately needs the help, her child was removed and I believe it was due to this medication.

Julie

AskDocWeb: (revised answer 7/6/2011) There is one report of Methyldopa (Aldomet, Apo-Methyldopa, Dopamet, Novomedopa) causing a false positive in urine drug screening tests but we are still looking for documentation on that.

Subj: Drug screening test

If someone is taking Bontril and need to have a drug screening test done how long should Bontril be stopped prior to drug test in order to test negative?
Jenna

AskDocWeb: Bontril is not on the list of drugs that can cause a false positive.

Subj: False positive for PCP
Date: 1/15/2007
What meds can cause a false positive for PCP?

Lynnette

AskDocWeb: The only drugs that have been reported to cause a false positive for PCP are Diazepam, Ketamine, Diphenhydramine, and Efexor Tablets (venlafaxine hydrochloride).

Subj: STILL testing positive
Date: 1/15/2007
I was prescribed phenobarbital October 31, 2006…it is now January 15, 2007 and I am STILL testing positive. I believe I had 20 pills and took 2-3 per day, which takes us into November 20,2006 at the latest. Does ANYTHING I am taking currently produce a false positive: Trazadone Seroquel Suboxone Paxil Trileptal Topamax lovastatin (mevacor) Nadolol Amitriptyline (ELAVIL) Furosemide (lasix) Syrtec Fexofenadine (Allegra) In order to refill my suboxone, my doctor needs to see a negative for phena’s, which–understandably–is hard to prove if the test is, indeed, positive! I KNOW I haven’t taken any benzo or pheno or anything in this category since November. HELP!

Ellen

AskDocWeb: Elavil is known to test positive for opiates for up to three days.

Subj: False positives for amphetamines?
Date: 1/17/2007
I have seen numerous articles on OTC and prescription meds that cause false positives for amphetamines. However this mostly refers to the EMIT tests. So are there any medications, food, etc., that will show a false or valid positive for Meth amphetamines other than meth amphetamines? Thanks,

Kraig

AskDocWeb: Yes and we just updated the list so take
another look.

Subj: Positive for meth
Date: 1/21/2007
I took a drug test for my probation and it came back positive for meth. Could it be a result of an anxiety pill?

Rachel

AskDocWeb: Yes, some anti-anxiety pills can cause a false positive.

Subj: Tested positive for amphetamines
Date: 1/21/2007
I tested positive for amphetamines and I don’t do any drugs of any type. I did take a Pepcid AC the night before the test. Would this make it come out false-positive? The pharmacist says no, but I have checked on the web and as an “inactive ingredient” it contains methacrylic acid copolymer. From what I read, this is in the family of amphetamine salts.

Alicia

AskDocWeb: We agree with your pharmacist, Pepcid AC isn’t known to cause false positives on drug tests.

Can Xylocaine cause a false positive on a urine test?. My brother had foot surgery, they gave him Xylocaine during the surgery, and when he we was given a urine test, he failed for cocaine. Are there any pain medications that might make him get a false positive for cocaine or the xylocaine itself? This is very critical as it has caused a very large problem with him being placed in prison. He swears that he was not doing cocaine, and I believe him, since even when he was using, he never used cocaine.

Jeremy

AskDocWeb: Xylocaine wouldn’t cause a false positive, but the pain medications given after the surgery could have done that.

Subj: False positive for opiates?
Date: 1/22/2007
I was prescribed Tylenol-3 (w/Codeine) for oral surgery. I then tested positive for oxymorphone. Is it possible that the Tylenol-3 caused the false positive as both are opiates?

ECM

AskDocWeb: Yes, the Tylenol 3 could show up as a false positive.

Subj: Creatine
Date: 1/23/2007
A friend of mine was recently received a false positive. He has been taking large amounts of Creatine. Can Creatine cause false positives?

Greggory

AskDocWeb: No.
