Subj: Tested positive for Marijuana
Date: 1/23/2007
I just tested positive on a drug test, I’m on probation. Here’s the thing, I figured it would be positive due to my wisdom teeth being pulled and the vicodin would show up. Well when I went to talk to my PO, he told me I was positive for Marijuana! I hadn’t smoked, I was around it for such a little time but not enough for it to be “triple the limit to where it shows up positive on a test.” Which I believe is .5 or something. Here’s the thing… I was taking Ibprofuen and all sorts of asprin when the vicodin ran out! Any idea of what I should do? Also what I should ask the testing lab… like what kind of tests proform?

AskDocWeb: Sorry Tony, just being around that second hand smoke for a little while is enough to cause it to show up on a drug test.

Subj: Promethazine
Date: 1/24/2007
I am in the military and had a urine drug test and I was taking Promethazine (oral and suppository) and the test came back positive for oxymorphone. Would that have caused the test to come back as that? What else could have caused that if that wasn’t it?

AskDocWeb: Yes, Promethazine is known to cause a false positive on some drug tests. Oh, and Nathan, thank you for your service to our country.

Subj: Cholesterol medications
Date: 1/24/2007
Can cholesterol medications cause a false positive, such as Provachol?

AskDocWeb: No.

Subj: Showed positive for cocaine
Date: 1/25/2007
Recently had random urine test at work. Showed positive for cocaine, but have not used this. Only medication I’m taking is a generic for Paxil, Paroxetine HCL. Is there any evidence that this could show a false positive?

AskDocWeb: No, those two medications are not on the list, were you taking any cold medications that could have affected the test?

Subj: Failed a drug test
Date: 1/25/2007
Hi, I recently failed a drug test for cocaine, my level was said to be 3365, I’m only taking phentermine.

Subj: Tested positive for cocaine
Date: 1/29/2007
Hi, I recently tested positive for cocaine, the only drug I used constantly is phentermine.

Subj: Cocaine in a urinalysis?
Date: 1/29/2007
Hi I am in the U.S. Air Force, have a completely clean criminal record, but I tested positive for cocaine in a urinalysis. I would never even DREAM of doing cocaine, but I am not sure how to prove it. Over Exodus I got sick so I took a few medications, Corocidin, Dryxeral, and Pseudofed. I am not sure if these could cause a false positive but your knowledge would be GREATLY beneficial to me… please help.

AskDocWeb: Sudafed can, and with the other two, check the ingredients. It’s a shame that the public isn’t made aware of what will cause false positives so they can avoid these products if they have to do drug screening.

Subj: Amoxicillin
Date: 1/30/2007
Hello- I am taking amoxicillin which I am told gives a false positive read for cocaine. Recently I failed a urine test for cocaine that I have not used. Is there any definitive evidence that links amoxicillin to a false positive read for cocaine. This false read may cost me my job. Thanks,

AskDocWeb: According to Dr. WEBster from the University of Maryland Counseling Center, it does. It’s also mentioned in an article in the Oregon Herald titled, “Drug Testing Does No Good” and on at least one of Doctor Spiller’s pages. You might try contacting the lab that performed the test, some are helpful and some are not.

Subj: Tested positive for cocaine
Date: 1/31/2007
My son is away in a drug rehab program. Last weekend he came home and they gave him a swab drug test when he returned to the program. I would like to know if you can have a positive/negative reading for cocaine if you are taking seraqil, straterra, neuronton and paxil all together. He was not out of our sight the two days and I cannot understand how he tested positive for cocaine use. Thank you for your help in this matter.

AskDocWeb: Sorry Kathy, those meds are not on our list which was just recently updated.

Subj: Orasure Intercept swab drug test
Date: 1/31/2007
I took an Orasure Intercept swab drug test. I came up positive for cocaine. I do not use cocaine, not ever. About 20-30 minutes before the test, I used ACT vanilla mint mouthwash that is supposed to fill in the cracks in your teeth. You aren’t supposed to eat or smoke for 30 minutes afterward. About 20 minutes before the test, I ate a piece of cake. About ten minutes before the test, I smoked a cigarette. I am also on fosinopril. They told me there are no false positives for cocaine. I’ve done research and beyond getting tested for kidney or liver disease or diabetes, I have no idea how to prove my innocence. I need to find out what caused this, not only to clear my name, but to make sure this doesn’t happen again. Help, please!

AskDocWeb: If there is any doubt about test results you should insist on getting a GC/MS confirmation test to prove your innocence.

Subj: Tonic water
Date: 2/1/2007
Can tonic water cause you to have a false positive for cocaine if you drink 2 bottles before the urine test?

AskDocWeb: Just for the record, the information here is intended to aid those honest people who do not use drugs illegally.

Subj: Viagra?
Date: 2/3/2007
VIAGRA… can it cause a false positive test result? Long story short, the doctor gave my husband a sample packet. We did not think to ask if it would test positive. But he tested positive. We are at our wit’s end trying to figure this out. I have been on the computer for 2 days trying to find info on viagra. It is the weekend and we can not get in touch with the doctor and have to have an answer by Monday. The pharmacist I talked with on the phone could not find any info that it would but he WAS NOT sure.

AskDocWeb: We have not heard of such a thing either.

Subj: Test came back positive
Date: 2/6/2007
I had quit using marijuana awhile before I had to take a drug screen for my med clinic it came back positive. I had been exposed to it though. They did like an instant test. I went for the med clinic then the results came down during the clinic as positive (it came back really high). Then I went back up to seal the container which had been left unsealed during the med clinic so it could be shipped to the lab for further testing as it had been at least a few months since I had used anything I was concerned. I then had another test done within a 5 day period that came back negitive. I don’t know what to do about this cause when I questioned it they said it was not wrong and there was no way possible for it to be. Their test was right and I had used according to them! I was on a lot of anti depressants to like effexor, seraquel, trazadone, and kolonopin. The year before I had kidney stones. I also had lost about 20 or so pounds around the time of the test. The test before was also negitive for thc. I don’t know what to do to prove false positive’s to anyone because they are convinced of their accuracy.

AskDocWeb: It is possible to test positive just from being exposed to marijuana smoke but it is very unlikely.

Subj: Positive cocaine test
Date: 2/6/2007
I have a client who is threatened with jail over a positive cocaine test. He reports (and has a prescription for a REFLUX disorder that contains Arithromyican…claims no drug use…is he for real?

P.S he only tested + after his release from the hospital and got the medication.

AskDocWeb: Erythromycin may have caused a false positive for cocaine but we have no way of knowing if he is for real or not.

Subj: Black Cohosh tea
Date: 2/8/2007
I heard Black Cohosh tea may show a false positive for cocaine or a test may show cocaine metabolites from this tea? Have you ever heard of this?

AskDocWeb: No, Mormon tea has been reported but not Black Cohosh.

Subj: Positive for PCP

His job gave him a drug test and said he was positive for PCP is that possible

AskDocWeb: Yes, that is possible with a combination of Excedrin and Robitussin.
