Subj: Positive for cocaine
Date: 10/27/2009
I test positive for cocaine in a swab test I have never used cocaine before in my life. The only drug I been taking is phentermine.

AskDocWeb: Phentermine has been reported to show up as a false positive for Amphetamines and Ecstasy on urine tests ( References 3, 4, and 11) but not cocaine.

Subj: False positive for PCP?
Date: 10/27/2009
I am currently taking serequel, trazedone, lamictal, kolonopin, and vistiral, could this cause a false positive for PCP?

AskDocWeb: (answer revised 6/30/2011) Trazedone has been reported to sometimes show up as a false positive but the reference does not say what it mimics (Reference 32). A hospital in Florida has reported that lamotrigine (Lamictal®) has shown up as a false positive for Phencyclidine (PCP) on rapid urine toxicology screens.

Subj: Coca flour, coca oil, and coca leaf
Date: 10/28/2009
I tested positive for cocaine. I for sure have never used it. The only thing I take is benicar hct, viagra, Excedrin IB and goody’s etc, for cluster headaches. I recently just figured out that a jar of honey that was given to me by my daughter during the holidays called Novoandina Caranavi Private Reserve, this may be the problem. The container says nothing about being coca honey. I assumed it to be gourmet honey, but after finding the ingredients on the internet it shows coca flour, coca oil, and coca leaf. I’m told that I tested over 3 times the confirmation cutoff value (what does this mean)? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

AskDocWeb: According to the European Journal of Emergency Medicine (Reference 41), Coca tea is derived from the same plant that is used to synthesize cocaine and does cause a positive for cocaine. The confirmation cutoff value is the amount of drug or drug metabolites that indicates a positive. This means that your sample contains 3 times the amount that would indicate drug abuse.

Subj: Gaining weight
Date: 10/29/2009
I had a false-positive on my drug screen for my p.o. Is there a way that gaining weight had anything to do with that? My levels were a 38 and went up to a 44. But in the time frame I’ve been on house arrest and have put on 6 pounds could that have caused it. Because I haven’t used since Sep 11. please help me. Thank you,

AskDocWeb: Sorry Ashley, there are no reports of false positives caused by weight gain.

Subj: Tested positive for benzodiazepines and methadone
Date: 10/29/2009
I am in a suboxone outpatient program. I have been on it for close to a month now. I went today to get a one months prescription and my doctor told me that my urine had tested positive for benzodiazepines and methadone. I had done neither. I took a trazedone, and elavil one time a week and a half before the ua. I am trying to find credible proof that I did NOT do these drugs! I had to give a ua today and now I am scared that the same thing will happen again! I was on methadone prior to getting on the suboxone, but they tested me with the ua a week and a half after my last dose of methadone. Is there any way that the methadone would’ve still showed up after that long in my urine? My doctor says that he has never had that happen. I do have really bad kidneys and have had multiple problems with my kidneys and liver in the past. Could that have contributed to this? Keep in mind that during the 5 years that I took methadone, I never once gave a positive ua for anything! Any information would be very helpful. Thanks,

AskDocWeb: You might start by backing up to that statement about finding proof that you did NOT do the drugs. It is impossible to prove a negative so don’t waste your time trying. Instead, make them prove that you DID do the drugs by getting a GC/MS confirmation test. If the result of your urine test is a false positive then they will NOT be able to confirm it with the GC/MS.

Subj: False positive?
Date: 10/30/2009
I was recently given a oral swab drug screen for Illicit drugs. I forewarned the administrator that I also take the following prescribed medications: Adderal (ADHD) Xanax (anxiety) Effexor (Mood/anxiety) Lunasta (sleep aid) and finally Bupernorphie (Subutex & Subuxone). Well it was no surprise that I came back positive for: Opiates, Benzo, Barbituates, & THC. The only thing I didn’t come up for is Cocaine. The only reason why these results are is due to the RX’s. Can you confirm the false positives for me? Thx,

AskDocWeb: We can’t confirm the results of your specific drug test. What we can do is provide you with professional references that report these products have caused false positives for other people. Look up each of your prescription drugs on this page. The references are listed after each product.

Subj: Egyptian Blue Lotus
Date: 10/31/2009
Ya, sorry I didnt give out the name properly, I’m not worried about salvilotus, I’d like to know if Egyptian Blue Lotus also known as “Nymphaea caerulea” can cause a false positive for morphine, opiates or anything, thank you for your time.

AskDocWeb: Sorry Elias, we have no data on Egyptian Blue Lotus.

Subj: Tested positive for suboxone
Date: 11/3/2009
My son was tested just recently and tested positive for suboxone and he said he did not take suboxone that he had taken alka-seltzer and benadryl. Is this possible?

AskDocWeb: Sorry Judy, there are no reports of either one causing a false positive for suboxone.

Subj: What’s going on?
Date: 11/4/2009
I get tested 2 times a week, they tested me for meth, and I tested positive for meth, and I am totally clean off meth!! What could be the problem they sent my urine away to the lab! I take lithium paxil, buspar, metoprolol, trazadone, hydroclorizide, prisolic, vitiam d, potassium, I am curious what’s going on!

AskDocWeb: Of the drugs you list, only the Trazedone has been reported to sometimes show up as a false positive. That is according to the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (Reference 32).

Subj: Stacker 3
Date: 11/5/2009
Will stacker 3 give a positive test for amphetamins?

AskDocWeb: You may want to check the ingredients in your Stacker 3 to see if it has ephedra in it. According to a Legal Bulletin from the Lewisburg Prison in Pennsylvania, ephedra has caused false positives for amphetamines, heroin, and opiates. Here is a list of products that are known to contain ephedra:

  • 3-Andro Xtreme
  • Adipokinetix
  • Amphetra-Lean
  • Animal Cuts
  • BetaLean
  • Clenbutrx
  • Diet Boost
  • Diet Fuel

Please note that many ephedra products also contain caffeine or other stimulants that may dramatically increase the chances of adverse side effects.

Subj: Test positive for benzo?
Date: 11/6/2009
Can you test positive for benzo if you are taking tylenol pm, unisom, sleepy aid, and phentermine?

AskDocWeb: The only drug you list that has shown up on urine drug tests as a false positive for Benzodiazepines is prescription sleeping pills (Reference 3 and 20).

Subj: Vitamin supplement and fish oil?
Date: 11/7/2009
I was placed on probation 9 months ago and have to do random screening for THC-COOH. I’m not sure which screening platform that they use. Recently I had three positive screens (THC) with non positive screens in between. I have been taking an enhanced energy vitamin supplement(KAL brand which has 1765% value of riboflavin per serving)and a omega fish oil( 1000 mg spring valley brand) together for years. On the days that the positive screens occured, I took these supplements after lunch because I forgot to take them in the morning. When I take them in the morning, my screen is non positive. I have not been around any pot whatsoever since 3/14(pos screens were 8/17, 9/24, 10/8). Is there a combination of substances between the vitamin supplement and the fish oil that would cause a false positive screen?

P. S. I sent a comment a few minutes ago about three false positive THC screens but forgot to mention that I had my own gc-ms analysis done immediately after the last two positive screens and the were both negative on all 9 lines.

AskDocWeb: We found several references (3, 16, 18, and 21) that say Riboflavin (vitamin B2) by itself can cause a false positive for THC on urine drug screens. Fish oil has not been reported to cause any problems with urine drug screens.
