Subj: Positive for cocaine
Date: 12/2/2009
I am taking crestor 5mg 1 a day and taking ranitidine aka Zantac 150mg 2times a day. I started taking the medication and a week later I was drug tested it came out positive for cocaine. Can the medication have anything to do with it? I swear I didn’t do any drugs I’m on medication and I am about to get Anesthesia for my Endoscopy test. Please help me my PO doesn’t believe me at all. But all I been going to is doctors all that week and getting blood tests. I need help please…
Michelle
AskDocWeb: Sorry Michelle, ranitidine has not been reported to cause a false positive for cocaine. If you believe the results of your drug test is a false positive then get a GC/MS confirmation test. That is the only way that we know to show the difference.

AskDocWeb: You can check the list of products reported to cause a false positive but the only way to show that the results of a urine test is a false positive is to get a GC/MS confirmation test.
Subj: Tested positive for amphetamines
Date: 12/6/2009
My daughter who is 19 and the first few years of her military career recently tested positive for amphetamines. She admits to taking a vivarin on her 1 1/2 hour drive up there at 5am and Claritin D for allergies. We are really trying to figure out what could cause this. She only takes advil, dayquil or nitequil for colds headaches ect. Can one of these give a false test result? Her career in the Military is at risk please help us figure this out!

AskDocWeb: Nyquil has been report to show up as several different false positives on urine drug test, Amphetamines, Heroin, Opiates, Morphine, Meth, and Ecstasy (References 1, 3, 11, 14, 16, 18, 19, 20, 26, and 29). In order to identify a false positive she will need to get a GC/MS conformation test on the same sample that produced the false positive.
Subj: Test administrator for a drug rehab
Date: 12/7/2009
I know most of the posts are from people who have been tested and come up positive for drug use, I am a test administrator for a drug rehab and I recently tested some one I almost certainly believe is not using. She tested positive for methamphetamines and I can not find among her medications a reason for a false positive, but she stated that she did take one 325mg Nyquil tablet, could this produce a false positive for meth? I will be sending it for independent testing also.
Kimberly
AskDocWeb: Yes, the references for Nyquil were just given in the previous answer.
Subj: Positive urine for Cocaine
Date: 12/9/2009
Hello I am on the methadone program, I am on Norvir, Epzicom and Prezista. I have just been put on this regimen I also take Mycelex for thrush. I have Hep-c I just got a positive urine for Cocaine, I really want to know how this is possible? I travel 50 miles to get to the clinic and was at the point where I was getting take homes so only had to go once a week. Now they have taken all my take homes and if they can’t get this straight I will just have to stop going (I’m on 115 mills by the way).
Confused
AskDocWeb: None of what you list has been reported to cause a false positive but they are possible. Urine drug tests are not 100% accurate. You might check the list for other possible cause but the only way to get it straightened out may be to get a GC/MS confirmation test.
Subj: Tylenol 3
Date: 12/9/2009
I recently did a voluntary urine screen for DCF, as I am prescribed tylenol 3 for back problems I came back positive for opiates what I dont understand is why I would come back positive for oxy as I dont, and have never taken anything but the t#3 that is prescribed to me. They did a dip test and they want me to provide the documentation to support that the tylenol with codine is what caused the false positive, but the only resource that they could offer in providing that information was to talk to my local pharmasist who did agree that t#3 would definatly cause me to come back positive for the oxy but was unable to provide me with any “official” documentation to support this. If they is any advice you could give me on this very urgent matter it would be greatly appreciated, as the people who did this test work for the people who get paid to take peoples children away.

AskDocWeb: If you can find out the name of the drug test they used you might be able to check the manufacturer’s website for documentation. If that doesn’t work then consider putting the burden of proof back on them by demanding a GC/MS confirmation test. If the urine test was a false positive then the GC/MS test will show it.
Subj: Pre-employment drug screen
Date: 12/9/2009
Hi, I have to go to a pre-employment drug screen tomorrow. Me and my fiancee have recently broken up and I am perscribed to Klunopin. What happens if I took a few extra than prescribed? Do they check the levels of the benzo. in my system?
Sean
AskDocWeb: It is our understanding that pre-employment drug screens only test for the presence of drugs that are known to be abused, not the amount.
Subj: Positive for BUPRENORPHINE
Date: 12/9/2009
I was given a test (GCMS URINE DRUG SCREEN 12 TEST) because I have been on oxycodone for quite awhile. It came back positive for BUPRENORPHINE in which I was told is suboxin (sic). Thing is I am 52 and have never ever taken heroin or anything along that line. Today when I went to get my script I was told I tested positive for the above some month and a half ago. I questioned how that could be. Could you tell me if anything else would give that as a result because now after being on these pain pills for 1 1/2 years they stopped them because of this false reading. This is important to me as I suffer serious pain all the time, I don’t care if I get oxycodone or something else, but they are insistent to just remove me from the pain clinic.
Chris
AskDocWeb: Sorry Chris, in this case we don’t have an explanation for it. Readers are encouraged to contribute possibilities.
Subj: Tested positive for morphine
Date: 12/10/2009
I tested positive for morphine and I have never taken any drugs in my life. I am on some mediciations and wondering if they could cause a positive in a test. I currently take Tramadol, Temazapan, Nortriptylin, Seroquel. At the time I was having alot of dental work done and they had me on pain meds tylenol, loratab and they made me sick so then they put me on percocet. Please help!! I dont know how this could have happened when I have never taken drugs.
Darci
AskDocWeb: Lortab is an opioid analgesic and some of the Tylenol products have also been reported to show as opiates. Percocet will test positive for opiates but that is not a false positive. It seems that you were taking drugs but if you have a prescription for them then they were legal ones. Hopefully you have a record of those prescriptions.
Subj: Hair test
Date: 12/10/2009
I just recently took a hair follicle test for my probation officer I havent done or been around any cocaine in over 5 months but I was a hard user before probation. I also havent cut my hair since then I tested positive!!! I was shoked!! wat went wrong? I honestly need to know I paid 75 dollars for my test the person who cut the hair grabbed the tops and tips of my hair please help me I dont wanna get revoked!!!
Omar
AskDocWeb: Since hair grow about a half-inch per month, your hair would only have to be two and a half inches long to show the cocaine use five months ago. It sounds like you are out of luck.
Subj: Tested positive for benzodiazepines
Date: 12/11/2009
I took a drug test last week and tested positive for benzodiazepines, another test 3 days later and a third one 3 days after that also popped positive. these were only dip tests and are being sent to the lab for confirmation. I have taken no benzos in over 9 months. The only medication I am on is an antibiotic smp-tmz. Is there any chance this medication caused the false positive?
Selena
AskDocWeb: It might be possible, we found 3 references (13, 18, and 20) that say antibiotics in general have shown up as false positives for opiates, heroin and/or cocaine. The only data we could find for specific antibiotics were Cipro (Ref: 25, 32), Fluoroquinolone antibiotics (Ref: 28, 32) Levofloxacin (Ref: 25, 28), Ofloxacin (Ref: 25, 28), and Rifampicin (Ref: 3).
Subj: Failed a drug test for cocaine
Date: 12/12/2009
I have a question. I am in the army a veteran, I love the military, but recently I failed a drug test for cocaine. I would never risk my career on something so dumb. It’s documented I was taking naproxen for my shoulder ammoxicillan, percocet, ibuprofen, hydrocodone for dental problems and my level for the substance was 5000 nanograms. It also failed for other things but they said they were from the medication and cocaine couldn’t have been. Can I fight this to save my career? Also I engaged in sexual activities with a woman under alot of cocaine could my levels be high cause of that? Please respond thanks,
Wade
AskDocWeb: You can fight it but we see no hope of winning. Unfortunately cocaine can be absorbed through the skin and one way that could happen is having sex with a cocaine user.
