Subj: Failed a drug test
Date: 2/19/2010
My daughter is on ARD and recently failed a drug test for benzo’s. The examiner explained that they have had several false positives for the same drugs and sent her to the hospital for a blood test. The test results came back as positive for .02ml of nordiazapam. My daughter recently had a biopsy done on her cervics and took tramadol for the pain. Other than that she has taken no other drugs. Can tramadol cause this to show up in her blood test or how did this level of drug show up in her blood? Is this something her body could produce by itself? It is my understanding that 1.0 to 0.25ml are theraputic levels.

Robert

AskDocWeb: Drug tests test for the substances that drugs break down into when the drugs are metabolized by the body. These metabolites are not something that the body can produce on its own. Tramadol has not been reported to show up as a false positive for benzos or anything else on a urine drug test.

Subj: Positive for Benzodiazepines
Date: 2/25/2010
I visited my pain management Dr. and had a urine test admin. After the test results came back I was told that I tested positive for Benzodiazepines. I do not take any anti-depress drugs or sleep meds. I am currently on hydrocodone/hydrocodine and Zanaflex for my neck pain. I did take Tylenol allergy before I went to bed the night before my visit. I take a multi-vitamin also. I have no idea why this would comeback positive? Please help! Thanks!

Jerry

AskDocWeb: Some urine drug tests have a problem correctly identifying hydrocodone because it contains synthetic opiates. A GC/MS confirmation test is needed to tell the difference, which means they have to send your original sample out to an independent lab for additional testing.

Subj: Seroquel
Date: 2/26/2010
Hello, I have clients in a Drug an Alcohol Recovery Home that I am currently employeed at that tested positive for opiates but the clients says they are not doing any drugs How ever they are currently prescribed seroquel can it show positive for opiates on a Urinalysis test?

Joshua

AskDocWeb: No, seroquel is not an opiate and has not been reported to show up on urine drug tests as opiates.

Subj: Lamictal or Vistaril?
Date: 2/26/2010
Could Lamictal or Vistaril cause a drug test to be positive for benzodiazepines?

Patty

AskDocWeb: It doesn’t appear so, and neither has been reported to show up on urine drug tests.

Subj: Melatonin
Date: 2/27/2010
Can taken 10mg of melatonin supplement cause a false positive steroid drug scan?

Peter

AskDocWeb: There are no reports of melatonin causing any kind of false positive on a urine drug screen.

Subj: Urine screen at hospital
Date: 2/28/2010
Is there any way that one test will test positive for metadone and 15 minutes later test positive for PCP in a pregnant female. She was in the hospital for 6 hours and at hour 4 they did a urine screen and this is what they found. Just want to find out where the mistake was made.

Vanessa

AskDocWeb: None of the substances that cause a false positive for methadone also cause a false positive for PCP – not possible. It is possible to take two different drugs and have one cause a false positive for PCP and the other a false positive for methadone. You might check this list for anything she was taking that might have caused this. There is also the possibility of an error made by one of the staff. Whenever you suspect a false positive, get a GC/MS confirmation test.

Subj: Tested positive for THC
Date: 3/1/2010
my husband tested + for THC when he took Ibuprophen before a drug test for work…He does not smoke marijuana…Is this a common thing?

Steph
AskDocWeb: Currently there is no way to tell how common it is but there are several good references that say it does happen. See references 1, 3, 16, 18, and 29. Sending the sample sent out to an independent lab for additional testing at can clear this up.

Subj: Tested positive for PCP
Date: 3/2/2010
my friend jennifer (last name withheld) is sitting in bossier parrish prison with her probation revoked because she tested positive for PCP every weekly test came back positive she takes effeor, depekote, and seriquel. Help.

John
AskDocWeb: Effexor (venlafaxine hydrochloride) has been documented to sometimes show up as a false positive for PCP (References 27 and 33). Additional testing is required to tell the difference between Effexor and PCP. It’s called a GC/MS confirmation test.

Subj: Keep coming up positive for THC
Date: 3/3/2010
I am as well in a treatment program and I am randomly tested for alcohol/drugs. I seem to keep coming up positive for THC the test should come up with a strong pink line if I am negative, however it is so faint you can barely see it. I take the following meds and I am wondering if any of these could be the problem as I have not smoked marijuana. Buspar Xanax Prilosec Propranolol Levothyroxine Tylenol PM Sucralfate Im in the treatment center for Alcohol abuse I have been told I dont have anything wrong with my liver other than the fact that it was enlarged, I am also considered to be pre-diabetic.

Andrea
AskDocWeb: None of the drugs you are taking would account for a positive result for THC. The only possibility that we see is the diabetes, which is known to cause a number of different false positives on urine drug screens. It sounds like you may need a GC/MS confirmation test to clear this up.

Subj: Amoxicillin
Date: 3/4/2010
Need to take a urine drug screen and have been on amoxicillin for a week. How long will it be in my system? I don’t need any problems.

Jaime
AskDocWeb: Amoxicillin has a pretty short half-life. It takes about an hour and a half for the amount in your body to be reduced by half. After 10 hours 95% is out of your system, and about a full day to get completely clean out.

Subj: Failed drug test for MDMA
Date: 3/4/2010
I am in the military and I was told that I failed a drug test for MDMA. I have never taken any ilegal substances durring my time in the military. I had a cold at the time of the urine test and was taking both vics nasal spray and vics nyquil cold and flu. They are both said to cause false positives on this website. Is there any way you can tell me how many micrograms of MDMA show up when I take these two cold meds? And if there is any other info on this subject it would be greatly apresiated. Thank you.

Chris
AskDocWeb: That type of specific information is typically not published because of the “War on Drugs” as it might aid those who abuse drugs. For additional information look up the references listed for each of your cold meds on this page. By the way, thank you for your service to our country.

Subj: Positive for marijuana
Date: 3/4/2010
My husband is in prison and has been since 8/03 and after several drug test he came up positive for marijuana after going to the dentist and was given 800 mg of ibuprofen. He is being punished now and I know he did not do anything wrong. How can we prove otherwise, they are the justice system?

Bernadette
AskDocWeb: What you can do may depend on what kind of drug testing was done. Urine drug screening is known to have an error rate and has to be confirmed in order to be valid. You might try finding out if the drug test results were confirmed by GC/MS confirmation or not.

Subj: Kava kava
Date: 3/5/2010
have you heard of kava kava testing positive as an opiate/heroin? Not in a urine test either, but by testing the product itself?

Shannyn
AskDocWeb: There are rumors to that effect but so far no documentation has shown up that could be used as a reference.

Subj: I began to take my daughters antibiotic
Date: 3/5/2010
I recently tested positive for norpropoxyphene and propoxyphene. On a daily basis I take zantac, hydrochlorothiazide, allegra, singular, flonase, flexeril, Lorcet plus, ultram, adipex, and prevacid. At the time I tested positive on my drug test, my husband had just had bypass surgery and I was not able to go to the doctor to get some antibiotics and I began to take my daughters antibiotic cefdinir and amoxicillin, and I was also taking a cough expectorant. Can any or a combination of the drugs above, cause a false positive, I have not taken any other drugs.

Marie
AskDocWeb: It is illegal to take prescription drugs that are not prescribed to you. Using drugs illegally can result in jail time, make it difficult for you to get a loan, or even keep you from getting a job because a drug conviction can remain on your police record forever.

Subj: Bendiner & Schlesinger
Date: 3/5/2010
i recently got two false positives for thc. the reason i say false is because i did not smoke weed or come in contact with it not in many years. i am in drug court and am facing jail time for it. they use the emit tests that i understand are cheap and creatite lots of false positives. the last test i requested the gc ms and those results also came back positive. to my knowlodge bendiner and schlinger the lab doing the tests cant break down a positive thc test so once the emit test is positive they just consider it positive and send in conformation of that. is that true? i cant understand how people stand behind these tests 100% and act like there could never be a mistake.

Rebecca
AskDocWeb: Although their initial drug screens are by immunoassay they do appear to confirm their results. According to the Bendiner & Schlesinger website they use the GC/MS test for confirmations.
