Subj: Testing positive for everything
Date: 4/26/2010
In January I had to take a urine test for probation, when they gave me the test I had just taken my Lithium, Pristiq, Klonopin, and Trileptal, and took some Aleve about 20 minutes prior to those..anyways It always seems that when I take my meds either right before the urine tests they come back that I have everything from THC to Meth in my system..how is this possible? It never fails. If I don’t take them before everything comes out fine?? This is driving me nuts because I am being labeled as a drug addict and the only drugs I am on are prescribed.

Lisa

AskDocWeb:
According references 3, 16, and 18 Aleve has shown up as a false positive for THC (marijuana). Klonopin may also be a problem because it contains benzodiazepines (Reference 18).

Subj: Positive for cannabis
Date: 4/27/2010
Hello, today I had a seliva drug test and the test came back positive for canabis. I do not use drugs nor have I been around anyone, that I know of, who does drugs. I take some prescription medication which are wellbutrin SR, Prozac, Synthroid, Lisinopril, Prilosec, Topamax and Ambien. I also take alot of Ibuprofen. Is it possible this is the cause of the positive reading. Also I went to take a urine test and I believe that will be negitive. However, if it is positive the GC/MS comformation test, who would I get that from and how exactly will it prove the test is wrong? Please help. Thank you,

Brandy

AskDocWeb: None of the drugs you list have been reported to cause a false positive for cannabis on urine drug tests. If you contest or reject the results of the urine screen those who did the original test will send your sample out for confirmation. This additional testing may or may not be at your expense.

The GC/MS conformation test has two parts. The first part is a gas liquid chromatography (GC) for that separates the sample components. The second part is a mass spectrometry (MS) that identifies the components. Together they form a Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) identification system capable of separating mixtures into their individual components, identifying them, and then providing quantitative and qualitative information on the amounts and chemical structure of each compound. These results provide a legally accepted identification of the drugs in your sample.

Subj: Citalopram – generic celexa
Date: 4/27/2010
Yesterday I did a urine test for a job I’m supposed to start soon. I forgot to tell the nurse I take citalopram-generic celexa-and am wondering if this will come up in the drug test as a possitive for anything. This has been driving me crazy since last! I dont want to lose this job over a stupid oversite on my part. Can you help answer? Thanks!!

Angie

AskDocWeb: Take a deep breath and relax. Celexa (Citalopram Hydrobromide) has not been reported to cause any problems with drug testing.

Subj: Nasonex
Date: 4/27/2010
Can Nasonex test positive on a drug test?

Allison

AskDocWeb: Nasonex has not been reported to cause any problems on urine drug tests.

Subj: Positive for cocaine
Date: 4/28/2010
I take risperdal, effexor, lithium, lorazepam and lamictal for Bipolar disorder. I was in the hospital and they did a drug test which came up positive for cocaine…this is insane…I am a chubby wife and mother of 2 babies. I would never do drugs….except the bipolar meds of course. Anyway, my atty said that those meds may lead to a false positive….is that possible?

Christy

AskDocWeb: A couple of them have caused false positives on urine drug screens but not for cocaine.

Subj: Positive for oxycodone
Date: 4/28/2010
My son is testing positive for oxycodone can Adderall or Lexapro give a false positive for oxy????

Lee

AskDocWeb: Neither has been reported to do so but Adderall is an amphetamine and has sometimes shown up as a positive for Meth (References 2008 PDR, 18, and 19).

Subj: Positive for morphine
Date: 4/29/2010
I was given a Medical Professional Profile (12 Drugs), Screen and Confirmation, Urine 764875 Drug screen after a patient Attacked me. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) Confirms MORPHINE in my urine. I do not take Morphine! I have a surgical history of a facial/maxillary proceedure performed 4 months ago and have prescriptions for Relafen, Robaxin, Lortab-10, Darvocet and xanax. My question is where the Morphine came from, and If I take a lortab 10 every night and have for the past 4 months, wouldn’t a positive be shown for that? I dont take the darvocet with the lortab 10, I take it if I dont want to take the lortab 10, to clarify. Is it possible a mistake could have been made? No Morphine was given to me in the ER after the incident, and I dont take anyone else’s prescriptions. Also, the result cut off is only at 300, and my result of Morphine was 315, which is just enough to call it positive. I know that I had a sandwich that had poppy seeds on the bread, but the work comp doc says a level of 315 wouldn’t pop up just from poppy seeds. I’m so very confused because my job is on the line and I cant figure out why morphine popped up, but no hydrocodone or darvocet popped up, and I have been taking these meds for 4 months since I had the jaw surgery. Thank you for your information.

AskDocWeb: Although the possibility of error is very small, any test conducted by a human being has an error potential. Is the lab that did the testing NIDA Certified? If not then the possibility of human error increases quite a bit. Then there is the question of accuracy of the GC/MS confirmation test. Reputable sources cannot conclusively say it is 100% accurate, only that it is NEAR 100% (99.???%). However, it is the most accurate test available and the results are good enough to be used in court. There is a rumor that Hydrocodone could show up as positive for Morphine, Opium, or Heroin but we have yet to find a professional reference for that.

  • Contac Severe Cold Formula
  • Cremacoat 4

Subj: False positive at a GCMS level?
Date: 4/29/2010
Can the drug Protonix which does give a false positive for THC at a screening level show a false positive at a GCMS level?

Louis

AskDocWeb: We can’t say for certain that it is impossible but the chance is so small that it appears very unlikely. There are no reports of that ever happening.

Subj: False positive for PCP
Date: 5/4/2010
Can u please send me a list of medications or medical conditions that may cause a false positive for PCP?

Connie

AskDocWeb: Replies are posted so that everyone can benefit from your question. So far the possibilities for causing a false positive for PCP is a short list:

Diazepam – (Reference 29)

Diphenhydramine – (Reference 24)

Ketamine – (References 16 and 32)

Venlafaxine hydrochloride (Effexor) – (References 27 and 33)

Subj: Tested positive for barbituates/phenobarbital
Date: 5/5/2010
Hi I recently went for a pre employment drug screen for a great job opportunity. I am a Nurse and have been since 19 and I am 23 now. My urine drug screen tested positive for barbituates/phenobarbital please help!!! Are there any OTC medications you know of that could cause this? I could have revocation of my license for this and I DO NOT take drugs. I especially wouldn’t for a elective pre employment drug screen. (ridiculous) thanks,

Josh

AskDocWeb: You can check this list to see if anything you are taking might account for the results. The important thing is not to let the results go uncontested. If you don’t get a confirmation test to rule out false positives then the results may become a permanent part of your work history.

Subj: Positive for methamphetamine
Date: 5/7/2010
My husband had a drug screening for a new hire and his urine test came back as positive for methanphetomine. They are sending is urine to the lab. He does not do any drugs. Can Lasinopril or Claritin D 24hr cause his test to show positive for meth?

Susan

AskDocWeb: Neither product has been reported to cause a positive for methamphetamines.

Subj: False positive screen for crystal meth?
Date: 5/8/2010
Help! I came up “dirty” for methamphetimine in two urine drug tests. I have type 2 diabetes controlled by glipizide. I also have congestive heart failure, controlled by furosimide, benazipryl, metapopral, and a beta blocker. In addition I am bipolar, and am treated with lamotragine and buspar(buspirone). Whew! I take benedryl OTC to help me sleep. I do NOT use Meth! The tester is sending my urine to a lab for an additional screen. I won’t see my primary physician or my psychiatrist until the end of May. This has enormous financial consequences for me in terms of continuing my benefits with the Veterans Adminstration. Would any of these conditions contribute to the false positive screen for crystal meth?

Steve

AskDocWeb: None of the drugs you list have been reported to cause a false positive for meth but diabetes has been involved in a number of different false positives; Amphetamines, Cocaine, THC, Ecstasy, Opiates, and Meth (References 3, 15, 16, 20, and 21). The additional screening should clear up any false positives.
