Subj: False positive for LSD
Date: 5/19/2010
Hi – I have been in a methadone program for 4yrs. and have had random drug tests 2 times a month for all the time in program. There has never been an illict test in all this time. That is I have passed all the tests as I am loyal to the program. I have not used any drugs or drank in over 4yrs. I was recently pulled over by the police and given breathalizer(passed) so they had me do blood and urine tests..and it came back positive for methadone as expected, but it also came back positive for LSD…I have never taken LSD in my life they charged me with a DUI. At the time of testing I was also prescribed Acyclovir for a cold sore outbreak could this give a false positive for LSD. Please Help I dont know what to do. I dont understand how I could come up positive for something I have never taken. Please this is very important
David
AskDocWeb: Acyclovir has not been reported to show up or cause any problems with drug screens. About the only thing that would disprove the LSD would be a GC/MS confirmation test on the original sample. Of course you may have to pay for the cost of the additional testing but once you have abused drugs you are typically assumed guilty until proven innocent.
Subj: Pre and post work-out drinks
Date: 5/19/2010
My son is a body builder and takes alot of supplements and pre and post work-out drinks. Can any ingredients in these products cause a false positive result?
Michele
AskDocWeb: There are a lot of those products on the market and without knowing which ones he is taking we can’t check them out. You might want to check the ingredients of each product against this list to find out if any problems have been reported.
Subj: Trileptal
Date: 5/20/2010
An worker tested positive for amphetamine. She is taking trileptal. Can this cause a false positive?
David
AskDocWeb: There are no reports of trileptal causing any false positive results on urine drug screens.
Subj: Stop my craving for cigarettes
Date: 5/20/2010
My name is Aaron. I stopped smoking pot in January. But, I havnt seem to stop my urge for cigarettes. And, I have no health issues. So, I do not use medications for anything. If I take a drug test for a job, would I pass? And, what can I do to stop my craving for cigarettes?
Aaron
AskDocWeb: If you stopped using pot in January then it is long gone out of your system by now and a drug test would not be a problem. As for stopping the craving for cigarettes there are drugs such as Zyban or cigarette substitutes such as the new electronic cigarettes.
Subj: Bonide room fogger?
Date: 5/22/2010
If I had contact with the fumes from Bonide household room fogger would this make me test positive for meth? The ingredients are Tetramethrin, permethrin, piperonly butoxide.
Don
AskDocWeb: We didn’t find any references for the Bonide household room fogger or any of its ingredients causing a false positive for anything.
Subj: Tested positive for Meth
Date: 5/23/2010
Hi there, My boyfriend tested positive for Meth on a random drug test. He has not touched that stuff! He was at the time taking some different types of over the counter pain reliever and prescribed tramadol for back pain. Is there any way something like that could have caused a false positive? Or possibly something else over the counter or food that I can’t remember that could gave caused it? All your advice I’d greatly appreciated! Thank you!
Meagan
AskDocWeb: Rather than list all the possibilities here, why not have your boyfriend take a look at this list to find out. It’s a pretty long list.
Subj: Tested positive for cocaine
Date: 5/24/2010
I tested positive for cocaine at my last probation visit. I have never used cocaine, but I am on alot of pain meds, such as methadose, loritabs, morphine, daliaud, nuerotin, xanax, soma, flexirill and amoxicillin, so would any of these make me test positive for cocaine.
Robert
AskDocWeb: Of the drugs you list, only Amoxicillin has been reported to show up as cocaine on urine drug screens. (See references 13, 16, 18, 20, 21, 26, and 29)
Subj: Tested positive for methamphetamines
Date: 5/24/2010
I have a client who tested positive for methamphetamines. He claims he has not used and is on many prescriptions most for heart disease high blood pressure, Lovaza, Furosemide, Plavix, Listinopril, asprin, Isosorb-mono, Spironolat, Aldoctone, Carvedilol, Zocor and Trazadone. Can you tell me if any of these drugs or the combination of these drugs cause a false positive test?
Nola
AskDocWeb: Bad news Nola, none of those drug have been documented to cause a false positive for methamphetamines.
Subj: Positive for Amphetamines and methamphetamine
Date: 5/25/2010
I currently abilify 10mg, trazodone 50mg, promethazine 25mg and dexitrim at least 2 capsule daily. I just started amoxicilin 500 mg and i’m in a recovery program and every urine drug test i have taken has come up positive for Amphetamines and methamphetamine. I gave them copies of my rx’s and they said false positives are fake. Can any of these medications make a false or am i going crazy? Please and thank-you for your time.
Ashleigh
AskDocWeb: Sorry Ashleigh, none of the drugs you list are documented to cause a false positive for either amphetamines or methamphetamine. If you believe your test result is a false positive then you will need a confirmation test to show that.
Subj: False positive for cocaine
Date: 5/26/2010
My daughter received a false positive for cocaine after taking a urine test. Could any of these meds cause this? Zovia, Buspar, Celexa, Fish Oil, and tyenol PM everyday. For a sinus infection this week she took azithromycin, afrin nose spray and mucinex.
Margaret
AskDocWeb: If you check the list you will find several Tylenol products that have tested positive for opiates. None of the rest of your list has been reported to cause that kind of result.
Subj: This is so unfair
Date: 5/26/2010
I went to a new pain clinic today due my old one being closed down by DEA. I was with this pain clinic for 6 years and have never ever tested positive for anything other than what is prescribed for me. Today I was told I tested positive for meth, I do not use drugs I am 49 years old and was treated like a drug addict. The only thing I have taken recently was a PM pain and sleep aid could that have caused a positive reading? I went to a lab next door to take another test and pay for it but was unable to do so without a doctor’s order. This is so unfair.
Dana
AskDocWeb: Some sleep aids are known to cause problems on urine drug screens. About the only thing you can do is to reject the results and demand a confirmation test to prove it. The urine drug tests are only accurate enough to indicate the possibility of drug abuse but they are not proof. If you don’t reject the results then you are accepting “drug abuse” to become a permanent note in your medical records, which could cause more problems years later.
Subj: Vitamin B and Naproxen
Date: 5/26/2010
Can taking two “b compex stress” vitamins the day prior to a urine drug screen cause a false positive for THC? I also have a fatty infiltration of the liver – does this have any effect? I also am on prescription Naproxen for a torn rotator cuff – will this casue any issues in a urine drug screen?
MIchele
AskDocWeb: Naproxen (Aleve) has sometimes shown up as a false positive for THC or Marijuana (References 1, 3, 16, and 21). The only vitamin that has caused any problems with urine drug tests is vitamin B2. The vitamin B complex for stress has several different B vitamins in it and is not likely to have enough of B2 to cause any problems.
Subj: Mirtazapine
Date: 5/27/2010
I have an upcoming pre-employment oral drug screen. I am prescribed mirtazapine 45mg daily before bed for sleep and mood stabilization. I have checked the list and I do not see a listing for mirtazapine specifically. Has there been any reported false positives for mirtazapine. I was told by a nurse that it might show up as a benzo.
Clark
AskDocWeb: Mirtazapine has not been reported to show a false positive for anything on urine drug tests.
Subj: Positive for benzodiazepines
Date: 5/27/2010
Strattera—-I’m on regular urine monitoring and recently my urines have been coming up positive for benzodiazepines. I’m also taking abilify and lexapro. Can my more recent taking of the strattera cause a positive result?
Rosemary
AskDocWeb: Sorry Rosemary, none of what you list has been reported to cause a false positive on a urine drug test.

Subj: Depression or stress?
Date: 5/31/2010
I got a DUI on Mar 5 2010. I have never done drugs of any kind, and have not consumed alcohol since that night of Mar 5. I have received 2 Diluted UA’s. My little sister had terminal cancer, I had been very upset and watched her die in my arms on Apr.11th. Can depression or stress cause a Diluted UA? Needless to say, I haven’t slept, can’t eat, and only drink mineral waters and diet coke 24/7. My doctor just prescribed Fluoxotine, but I have been afraid to take it.
Lori
AskDocWeb: Sorry Lori, we haven’t seen anything to indicate that depression or stress might dilute a UA.
