Subj: Positive for PCP
Date: 6/14/2010
hi my company that I work for done a drug test on me and said it was positive for PCP. I don’t even know what PCP is. I just started taking zoloft about a month ago. Would that cause a positive for PCP or any other medications. Please help me on this please!

AskDocWeb: Sorry Johnny, only 4 drugs have been reported to sometimes show up as a false positive for PCP; Diazepam, Diphenhydramine, Ketamine, and Venlafaxine hydrochloride (Effexor). Zoloft was not one of them.

Subj: Metformin and glyburide
Date: 6/14/2010
My brother is a recovering addict who has court ordered drug tests. He recently failed a drug test fot gluteraldehyde, an adulterant. He swears he is clean and that his diabetic meds or the disease itself has caused him to fail. The meds he is on are metformin and glyburide. He is facing jail time next week if we can not prove that this was a false poitive, could these drugs interfere or is he lying?

AskDocWeb: We can’t tell you if he is lying or not but there are no reports of metformin or glyburide causing any false positives. Of course a GC/MS confirmation test is one way to be sure.

Subj: Tramadol hci?
Date: 6/15/2010
Can prescription. Drug tramadol hci 200mg. Cause a false positive for Meth?

AskDocWeb: No, Tramadol is not a narcotic and it has not been reported to cause any false positives on urine drug screens.

Subj: Hydrocodone
Date: 6/15/2010
Ok, I had a buddy that had taken a urinaylsis and they said he had shown pos. for oxycodone but he was taking hydrocodone can you receive a false pos for this?

AskDocWeb: According to the Department of Pathology at the University of Michigan, Hydrocodone has shown up as a false positive for oxycodone. (Reference 41)

Subj: Taking a friend’s drug
Date: 6/17/2010
hi i was having anxiety and a friend was over and told me to take his stuff that helps him and its called adderall and i had to take a drug test and it showed positive for amphetimines and i was wondering what i would do because i dont want to loose my new jog over something that i would have never have taken if i knew it would ruin my chances.

AskDocWeb: Taking a friend’s prescription drug is both dangerous and in most places, illegal. Unfortunately learning that can sometimes be a expensive and painful experience.

Subj: Trazadone
Date: 6/17/2010
I just thought it would help others to know that on a urine test done by a pain management clinic I tested positive for methadone. Since I have no idea what methadone was, my doctor brought in a toxicologist who discovered it was because I had been prescribed and takin trazadone as a sleep aid. She said it’s less then a 1% chance of a false positive, but it happened to me. I hope this can help someone else as my world had been shaken to the core until this discovery.

AskDocWeb: Thanks Zane, it is very helpful to share first hand experiences like this with others.

Subj: Tested positive for barbiturates
Date: 6/18/2010
I need help. I have been attending a local methadone clinic for approximately 4 years. Having just completed my master’s degree, I’ve been under a tremendous amount of stress, but through it all, I never used any other substance. I know a lot of people think that methadone is just a replacement for pain pills or heroin. I thought so too. If it’s used correctly though, it definitely helps a person maintain and refrain from using other drugs. I believe it saved my life. Anyhow, my urine is tested randomly each month. The longer you are clean, the more take-home bottles you get weekly. Additionally, 2 positive urines in a row can get you kicked off of the clinic. Well I was tested this past Tuesday, 6/15, and received the results today, 6/18. To my shock I tested positive for barbiturates! I’m devastated. I paid to have my urine re-tested. In the meantime, does anyone know exactly what over-the-counter medications can cause false-positives for barbiturates? I have been taking over-the-counter medications for a cold and also for allergies. Any input would be GREATLY appreciated.

AskDocWeb: There are a few drugs that have shown up as a false positive for barbiturates on urine drug screens; antiasthmatics that contain phenobarbitol, Dilantin, Donnatol (for irritable bowel syndrome), and Fenoprofin.

Subj: Positive for benzodiazepines
Date: 6/18/2010
I continue to show positive for benzodiazapines at probation with their 0n-site test. But when I have a test done at my mental health agency (the specimen is sent to a lab) it comes back negative. What can cause this? My freedom is at risk. Here is a list of meds that i’m on: seroquil, cymbalta, atenolol, imdur, singulair, zocor, prilosec, ibuprophen, folic acid, thiamine. Please help.

AskDocWeb: Sorry Bruce, none of what you list has been reported to show up as a false positive for benzodiazepines. You might check this list to see if there is anything else that might account for that.

Subj: Positive for cocaine
Date: 6/18/2010
I had recently had streph throat and I was taking an antibiotic, drinking Chai Tea along with IBuprofen. I also take Clonazepam, Hydroxyzine. How or why would I test postive for cocaine?

AskDocWeb: Some urine drug tests mistakenly identify antibiotics as a positives for Cocaine. This is one of the reasons why it is important to get a confirmation test by an outside lab.

Subj: Albuterol or Vicks inhalers?
Date: 6/18/2010
Does medicines such as albuterol or vicks inhalers cause false positive on drugtest?

AskDocWeb: Several nasal sprays (Vicks inhaler, Afrin, etc.) have been reported to sometimes show up as a false positive for Amphetamines and/or Ecstasy (References 2, 10, 16, and 21).

Subj: Fioricet?
Date: 6/19/2010
In an earlier reply on 3/24/2006 you said that Fioricet cause a false positive for amphetamines because it is a barbiturate. Is this an error? I can find nothing in the scientific literature about any of the barbiturates testing positive for amphetamine. If your answer is accurate, can you please cite a source? I am using your website as a good source of drug information in my graduate level class on substance abuse.

Dr. Susan

AskDocWeb: Thanks Susan, we appreciate when readers point out errors and have made the appropriate correction. It appears that the EMIT test has a problem with Fioricet only when it is combined with Codeine. (Reference 18)

Subj: Tested positive for THC
Date: 6/19/2010
my father recently got a new welding job two weeks later he was walked out. they told him he tested positive for THC on his u/a! he takes lots of ibuprofen and takes his prilosec once a day. Can that cause him to fail?

AskDocWeb: There are several references about Ibuprofen showing up as a false positive for Marijuana (THC) (References 1, 3, 16, 18, and 29).

Subj: Tested positive for benzodiazepines
Date: 6/20/2010
I’ve been in a Suboxone Treatment Center for 5 weeks. The last 2 weeks I tested positive for benzodiazepines. I took 2 1mg Klonopins 2 weeks ago, since then my urine tests are still ciming up positive for benzos., is the Klonopins still causing it? If so, how long will they remain in my system?

Can Vistoril show a false positive for benzodiazepines?

AskDocWeb: There are factors that affect how long Klonopin stays in your system; how much you weigh, your tolerance, what have you eaten, etc. all determine the life of a drug inside your body. Most of the drug is out of the system between 24 to 36 hours but it has been found in urine tests for up to a week after taking it. Vistaril is a hydroxyzine and not a benzodiazepine. It should not make you test positive for benzos.

Subj: Testing in Naval boot camp
Date: 6/20/2010
Hi, since June of 2009 I have been bodybuilding/powerlifting, thus taking lifting supplements. My only concern is that I am scheduled to ship to Naval bootcamp this coming August 10th, 2010. Upon arrival there I will need to take a military urine test. Things Ive been taking since June ’09 are Protien Shakes, Creatine blend shakes, salmon oil, melatonin, vitain D, maltodextrin/waxy maize carbohydrates, micronized glutamine, Branched Chain Amino Acids, L-Arginine, L-Carnitine, fat Burners that cut cortisol levels/have some caffiene. And liquid Nitric Oxide Capsules. My question to you is, should any wierd combination of these supplements I’ve been taking since June ’09 make me pop positive on this urine analysis August 10th/should I stop taking these things now?

AskDocWeb: Although we have been researching false positives for the past six years, there are still a lot of unanswered questions. We can say that none of what you list has been reported to cause any problems with urine drug testing, military or civilian.

Subj: False positive for THC?
Date: 6/21/2010
I went in for a urine test today and my test came back as a false positive. I have been taking Hydrocodone for a little over three weeks. The test results were marked THC and opiates. Would this be a contributing factor in why the test was false positive?

AskDocWeb: Sorry Monika, we have no explanation for your test coming back positive for THC.

Subj: Lost his job
Date: 6/22/2010
My son tested positive for oxycodone in his urine and lost his job. He never took it and was wondering what could have caused it? Food? Over the counter meds? Please reply asap, just happened yesterday and dont know what to do. Can he demand another test?

AskDocWeb: Although he may have to pay for it, in most places he has the right to demand a confirmation test from an independent lab. The list of substances that may cause a false positive can be found here.
