Subj: Positive for marijuana

I have taken a pr employment drug test and they said I tested positive for marijuana when I dont smoke the stuff, they said my leveal was 35 nano grams per milogram, how ever I do take ibuprofen just about every day and I also take a whole bottle of motrim every month for my monthly, also I have been perscribed naproxen that I take some times, could this be the problem?

AskDocWeb: There are several good references (1, 3, 16, 18, and 29) that say using Ibuprofen might result in a false positive for marijuana (THC). Naproxen (Aleve) has also been reported to show up as a false positive for marijuana (References 1, 3, 16, and 21) on urine drug tests.

AskDocWeb: Tradone is not in our database. If you meant Tradon (Pemoline), that has not been reported to cause any problems with urine drug tests.
Subj: Ibuprophen and thera flu

please help me I need references from docs please. I’m in a cps situation. Honest I haven’t used marajuana since May 12th 2010. dropped the first time on 5-26-2010. I am 400 pounds and 5’10 ft tall. I was a heavy smoker before the case. I am still testing positive for thc. My levels are dropping. However when ever I was taking ibuprophen and thera flu walgreens brands my levels went up. Please tell me does the medicines that I mentioned interfere with my thc levels? I swear I have not touched or been around marajuana since May 12th 2010. Please help. I need the truth.

I tested positive for cocaine and I did not use I was on a series of antibiotics as wall as other medicines is it possible that there is a mistake? My child can be taken away please respond asap thank you.

AskDocWeb: Although care is taken to avoid them, it is possible to make a mistake on a urine drug test.. Antibiotics are also known to sometimes produce a false positive for cocaine (References 13, 18, and 20). A GC/MS confirmation test should be able to clear this up.
Subj: False positive for Benzos?

I have a client taking the following: Terazosin HCL, Amlodipine BES, Lisinopril, Folic Acid and Pyridoxine. Can any of these cause a false positive for Benzos?

AskDocWeb: None of those have been reported to cause any problems with urine drug tests however, if you suspect a false positive then getting a GC/MS confirmation test may be a good idea.

Hi- I was just wondering: Can gabapentin, Naltrexone and Trazadone show a false positive on a drug test. My husband took a random drug test ( U. A) and he tested positive for benzo, heroin, opiates. He is taking the 3 meds. as perscribed by his doctor. He told the person that gave him the results the meds. that he was taken and was told that none of them would show up. I did some research via the internet and found several links that said otherwise. Please forward any answers. Thank you,

AskDocWeb: Trazodone, which is used to treat depression, is often misspelled as trazadone or trazedone. According to the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services Trazedone sometimes shows up as a false positive result for amphetamines on urine drug tests. Trazodone is also sold under the brand names Desyrel and Oleptro.
Subj: Liver disease (hep C) and Wellbuttin

My daughter has tested positive for amphetamines and is now incarcerated. She has liver disease (hep C) and takes Wellbuttin. Could either of cause a false positive for Amphetamines, methamphetamines or Ecstasy?

AskDocWeb: It looks like it could be either one. There are several sources that say those with liver disease have tested false positive for Opiates, Ecstasy, THC and Amphetamines (References 3, 15, 16, 20, and 21). It is not clear if this was a result of the disease or the drugs used to treat the disease. Wellbutrin is also on the list for having shown up as a false positive for amphetamines on urine drug tests.

AskDocWeb: Adderall is an amphetamine that has tested positive for Meth (References: 2008 PDR, 18, and 19) on urine drug tests but we don’t have any information about breathalyzer tests.

My doc reported to me that methamphetamine was positive in my urine. NEVER used it. Current meds are wellbtrin sr 150 x 2 day celexa 50 mg x 1 a day vistaril 100mg @ hs ativan 1mg 2x day prn otc tylenol and benedryl. I was stunned.

I was diagnosed with arthritis at age 15 & told I’d be in a wheelchair at 40. I am now 46 and still walking, but at night, to sooth the pain and help me sleep, I smoke pot. I’ve just been promoted in my job & I am very nervous about surprise drug testing. I don’t want to lose my job, but I also don’t want to get hooked on medications. If I had started taking ibuprophen & pain meds when they wanted me to, I’d be hopelessly addicted & have no liver. My pot intake is only at night to dull the pain and help me sleep and has NEVER been used during working hours. How can I go about passing a drug test if I’m ever called in for one?

AskDocWeb: Hopefully you live in an state where you can get a prescription to use marijuana for medical purposes. If not then it seems to be a choice between using pot and keeping your job.

Subj: Riboflavin

I see that Riboflavin is substance that could cause a false positive for THC. It worries me because I eat a lot of food that has Riboflavin in it. I just got on probation and I’m having to give a UA every month. Do I need to drastically change my diet?

AskDocWeb: The false positives reported with Riboflavin occurred only in those taking supplements. There are no reports of false positives with vitamin B2 obtained from food.

My son is on bactrim and cefzil for a stalph infection with MRSA He failed a drug test after being in hospital for 4 days. It showed positive for benzos… Can either of these two drugs caused him to fail. Thank You.

AskDocWeb: Cefzil has not been reported to cause any false positives on urine drug tests. However, according to reference 60 Bactrim may test positive for benzodiazepines.

i have recently tested positive for Oxymorphone and i dont take any percribed medications and im wondering if taking supplements for working out like lots of amino acids and high protens will cause this to happen and if not then what would?

Subj: Methyldopa or Tums?

I just had a baby two weeks ago and was aaccused of using drugs due to a positive ampetamine urine and blood test. The only thing I was taking was tums, extra strengh tylenol and my blood pressure medication Methyldopia. I would never do any drug to jepardize my daughters life or my marriage, could Methyldopia cause a false positive? I have heard some types of blood pressure meds could.

AskDocWeb: (revised answer 7/5/2011) Tums has not been reported to cause any false positives. There is antidotal reports of Methyldopa sometimes showing up as a false positive for amphetamine but so far no documentation on that.

I have found this information quite useful. As a Child Abuse investigator, I work a lot with parents who are using illegal drugs. I am extremely intrigued by the statement of this report stating that out of about 1,200 labs in the U.S. who do the testing, less than 100 meet federal standards, which could lead to false positive drug screen results. My question is is there a list of the labs that do meet federal standards and if so, is this something that I would have access to? Thank you so much for your help!

AskDocWeb: The government organization responsible for regulating the drug-testing industry is The National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA). All testing associated with government agencies (department of transportation, etc.) complies with the NIDA standard. It is NIDA that decides what the “safe” cutoffs are to avoid false positives. NIDA maintains quality standards by sending positive and negative double-blind samples to the labs periodically. The labs do not know which samples came from NIDA. If the lab results are wrong, NIDA may take away the lab’s certification. Only labs that perform the GC/MS on site can be NIDA certified. Labs that send their samples to other laboratories for GC/MS confirmation are not eligible for NIDA certification. We didn’t find a list of certified laboratories on their website (drugabuse.gov) but there is a contact number for information on certification of drug testing laboratories: 240-276-2600. If you want to know if a specific lab is NIDA certified or not, just ask the lab.

AskDocWeb: Valium (Diazepam) is one of the most slowly eliminated benzodiazepines. It has a half-life of up to 200 hours, which means that the blood level for each dose falls by only one half in about 8.3 days. It can take up to 30 days to completely leave your system.
