Subj: Orajel (Benzocaine)
Date: 8/5/2010
Can Orajel (Benzocaine 20%) give a false positive on a urine test for Benzodiazamine. I live in a recovery house and need to know if this could give a false reading! Thank you for your help.
Joseph
AskDocWeb: Dispite the name ending with “caine”, there are no reports of false positives with benzocaine.
Subj: Tested positive but…
Date: 8/5/2010
I came up positive on a urine screening on a gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The reading was 18ng. The cut of was 15ng. Here is the problem. I havent smoked anything. I work in Law enforcement. I had a Hair folic sample taken an it came back negative. I was diagnosed with stage 2 testicular cancer in Nov 2007. I Had to undergo 6 months of cemo therpy I took VP-16 an Cispltin. I also received several bone marrow shots over that time. I tested positive in June 8 2009 However, I had taken a drug test in April 12 2009 and it came back negative. I took the hair test on July 27 2009. I had to get a hair test too because they waited 35 days to tell me I was positive even though there policy states they had to tell me with in 15 days. It is my understanding that a Hair test goes back farther then a urine test.
I have appealed my termination to the state. I am waiting for a hearing date. I am looking for information regarding any false positive that might have made me come up positive. I am also looking for more info on hair samples. Here is the kicker in this whole story. I was fired back in 2005 I fought an one then I came down with cancer I was not back at work for more then 6 weeks before they came to me with this. It all seems too odd. If anyone can help me please contact me at (all email addresses are confidential). My life depends on it, thanks again.
John
AskDocWeb: Your kicker does sound suspicious. Hum, it does make one wonder what else is going on. Urine tests can indicate the possibility of current drug abuse but hair samples can reveal your history. The information here applies to urine drug testing but any replies received will be forwarded to you.
Subj: Advair and Symbicort?
Date: 8/5/2010

Laori

Subj: Positive for amphetamines!
Date: 8/6/2010
My wife got put on prozac back in June. She is on probation and got a drug test the 5th. We never worry about them cause we don’t take any thing!! Well the drug test on the 5th was positive for amphetamines!!! Got to doing some research and found this site they are sending it to the lab will the lab be able to tell the difference right???
Higgins
AskDocWeb: Yes, that is the purpose of the outside laboratory. It will either confirm the results or identify and clear up any false positives.
Subj: Positive for xanax
Date: 8/6/2010
Emergency!!!! I got a job at a hospital, the drug test showed benzo, I am taking valium and do have a script but when they sent it to escreen in kansas the gas gc/ms test showed I was taking xanax as well and it is NOT true. I am 10000% positive I never took xanax. My employer called them and requested them to send it to quest diagnostics for another test. What happened. I need this job!!! Help. I took doxycycline for an infected tooth and tramadol, advil and tylenol all of which I declared and have scripts for. The first day they called and asked if I had a script for valium I said yes. They said then everything is fine the next morning I awoke to another call saying I was positive for xanax. I took the phone to the pharmacist and he said they are both benzo’s and she told him the gc/ms test is very specific and tests for metabolites. I told them it is wrong and the employer had them send it to Quest diagnostics. I am wondering would could have caused this. Please help with an answer if you have one.
Cynthia
AskDocWeb: Sorry Cynthia, we don’t have an answer for this one.
Subj: Positive for benzo’s
Date: 8/6/2010
My urine tests keep showing positive for benzo’s, when I have not taken any. I am prescribed Celexa, Trazodone, Buspar, and Loratidine (generic Claritin). Can any of these show a false positive for benzo’s? I have found a few places saying trazodone could do this.
April
AskDocWeb: Just because someone on the Internet says something does not make it true. In order for a reference to be useful, as in a court of law, it needs to come from an authoritative or professional source. None of the medications you are taking are on the list.
Subj: False positive or false negative?
Date: 8/6/2010
My partner and I have been together for a year std free. Yet, 3 months ago my girlfriend and I took a break and she slept with someone. Last month we got back together, she got STD tested for everything and one of her test came back positive for Hsv 1. Since then she’s been tested 5 times by blood and swab and they’ve all come back negative for Hsv1.(keep in mind she got tested 1-2 months after that sexual incident.) My questions are 1. Is it more likely it was one false positive or 5 false negatives? 2. Are these results common? 3.She hasn’t had an outbreak. How do outbreaks outs start surfacing? 4.Should we keep gettin tested? Im so concerned, Any thoughts would be desperately appreciated.
Des
AskDocWeb: The answer to number one depends on several things, the type of test, the sensitivity, specificity and the population the test is used on. All tests have an error rate and both false negatives and false positives for HSV are possible. That is one of the reasons why the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that both virologic and serologic tests be used for diagnosing genital herpes. Getting both tests will eliminate the uncertainty. Outbreaks typically start with a tingling sensation before surfacing.
Subj: Angel dust?
Date: 8/7/2010
Hi there! I recently took a drug test for the department of children and families here in florida. The first time it came back diluted (I did not take anything to clean my urine) and the second time it came back positive for angel dust. I have never done angel dust in my life! What could cause a false positive for that?
Erica
AskDocWeb: Sorry Erica, there are no reports of false positives for angel dust.
Subj: Vyvanse
Date: 8/8/2010
Will Vyvanse show up as amphetamine on a hair follicle test?
Concerned
AskDocWeb: Most likely yes because Vyvanse is an amphetamine.
Subj: Cocaine readings
Date: 8/9/2010
For employment, my urine drug test came up positive for Cocaine & THC. Up until 9 months ago, I was a heavy marijuana user, but stopped completely back then. I have never used cocaine. I am on several depression/anxiety meds i.e. effexor, seroquel, clonazepam, nexium, and other or previous meds i.e. yasmin, tylenol extra strength for pain, lamictal. I am very overweight (250lbs). Would marijuana stay in my system after 9month? Would any of the above meds cause false cocaine readings. Thanks.
Signed Worried!
AskDocWeb: Marijuana has been detected in the body of heavy users up to 90 days after they quit. The extra strength Tylenol is a possibility so check the list.
Subj: Vyvanse
Date: 8/9/2010
Can vyvanse cause a false positive for THC or anything to deal with weed?
Ciege
AskDocWeb: No, Vyvanse will not cause a false positive for THC.
Subj: NO pain medications showed up in my system
Date: 8/9/2010
I recently was required to take a urine drug test by my doctor in order for her to prescribe me my pain meds that my pain doctor had previously prescribed. The drug test cost was $550. Today I was told that NO pain medications showed up in my system, even though I have taken 3.75mg hydrocodone, 3-4 times daily, for over 2 years. I have never, ever missed a day. How can this be? Now, both my pain doctor and my primary are refusing to prescribe the only medication that has ever kept my pain levels low enough for me to remain functional on a daily basis, and are refusing my requests to re-test. Help!
Anita
AskDocWeb: Sorry Anita, we have no explanation as to why your medication didn’t show up in your test.
Subj: Drugs test shows amphetamines
Date: 8/10/2010
My husband has just failed a drugs test showing amphetamines, he hasn’t taken any recreational drugs of any kind ever but he is on Simvastatin and ranitidine can these affect the test results. Please help.
Tracey
AskDocWeb: Simvastatin hasn’t cause any problems but according to the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services, Ranitidine sometimes shows up as a false positive for amphetamines.
Subj: Seraquel/Seraquek?
Date: 8/11/2010
Does seraquel cause false positive for benzodiazepine or elavil? Clients taking seraquel have tested positive for both of these other medications. Seraquek needs to be looked at more closely.
Dorothy
AskDocWeb: Thanks Dorothy, we will take a closer look at that. So far there are no reports to follow up on but we will be on the watch for them.
Subj: Positive for benzos
Date: 8/11/2010
I live in a halfway house. We are randomly screened with the dipstick style tests. When I first admitted I tested positive for benzos. As I was doing an inpatient stay prior to admission I was very disturbed. One of the counselors said it was because I was taking suboxone. Knowing from previous experience of dipsticks and suboxone I knew this not to be true…I didn’t argue. This past weekend I was screened again and the same thing showed up. NOW it’s has become an issue. I am flipping out about this. I understand people tell them all the time they didn’t use…. I take: Suboxone 16/4mg 1x/day Wellbutrin XR 300mg 1x/day Unisom 100-150mg 1x/night I’m almost certain its the unisom causing me to be positive for benzos…any help would be appreciated… Thanks,
Shawn
AskDocWeb: According to the University of Maryland Counseling Center, Unisom Nighttime Sleep Aid has shown up as a false positive for morphine on urine tests but they don’t mention benzos. In order to establish what is actually in your system, you may have to get a GC/MS confirmation test. If you are getting a false positive that confirmation test will show it.
