Report on Garlic Side Effects and Usage

Natural health supplements sometimes have unexpected side effects or interactions with medication that can lead to adverse reactions that are sometimes life threatening. The following is a list of cautions that you should be aware of before using Garlic (Allium sativum). These are referred to as drug/herb interactions.

Warning 1 – Contraindications: Pregnancy and lactation.

Warning 2 – Anticoagulants: Garlic may increase bleeding when used concurrently with anticoagulants. Use caution when combining with ginkgo, ibuprofen, aspirin, and other NSAIDs.

Warning 3 – Antidiabetics: Because of the hypoglycemic effects of Garlic, the dosages of oral antidiabetics may need to be adjusted.

Warning 4 – Insulin: Because of the hypoglycemic effects of Garlic, insulin dosages may need to be adjusted.

Used as a natural health remedy: Garlic is used internally for the following benefits:

  • antibacterial
  • anticancer
  • antifungal
  • hyperlipidemia
  • anti-hypertension
  • antiinflammatory
  • hypoglycemic

Garlic makes a very effective home remedy for toothaches. When crushed or finely chopped or crushed, garlic produces two chemicals that form into Allicin, a compound known for its antibiotic properties and its ability to ward off pain.

Side Effects of Garlic

  1. GI disturbances
  2. garlic odor
  3. nausea
  4. diarrhea
  5. high doses may cause anemia

Other side effects may also occur when using garlic spices. (See form below) Garlic spice and supplements are available over-the-counter.

As with any herb, a serious allergic reaction is possible. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction. These may include a rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
