Subj: Best over-the-counter product for gas?
Date: 7/6/2008
What is the best over the counter gas relief product for Sugar alcohols? Does one prevent the bloating and gas more then the others?

Matthew

AskDocWeb: According to the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), the best med for gas based on their clinical knowledge and practical experience is Gas-X. It contains simethicone, an ingredient proven to stop explosive gas leaks fast. (The APhA consists of about 3,000 pharmacists.)

Subj: Prevent winds from forming
Date: 8/1/2008
Recently my stomach is churning out more air with constant burping. One can even hear the wind in the stomach. My diet has not changed except that I’ve moved from Singapore to Qatar 1 year ago. Appreciate your advice how to prevent winds from “forming” in my system. Thanks.

Caroline

AskDocWeb: Moving can sometimes be stressful and may contribute to the problem, especially if it results in swallowing a lot of air. So can eating too fast so you might want to slow down. And pay attention to the tilt or angle of your head when you swallow. If your head is tilted forward with your chin lowered when you swallow your food, air is trapped ahead of the food. If that happens each time you swallow then air can build up in your system. There is also the possibility of a medical condition developing so consider consulting with your health care provider to make sure everything is okay.

I have always had stomach problems since I was little. They have told me I was lactose intolerant…and this page became very useful to me. I found it’s just stress. Thanks so much,

Subj: Abdominal bloating
Date: 10/14/2008
I have noticed severe abdominal bloating after taking any form of calcium supplements. I’ve tried various kinds of calcium – I am menopausal and obviously need calcium for my bones. What can I do?

Linda

AskDocWeb: Have you tried taking the calcium supplement right before a meal? You might experiment with finding out how well you tolerate calcium-rich foods and foods that have been calcium fortified. For example calcium enriched orange juice works well for many people.

Subj: Intestinal problems
Date: 11/13/2008
Thank you for giving me the chance to voice my feeling, I have had intestinal problems ever since I was a child, I am now 53 years old and I am so tired of the poor quality of life that IBS has given me, no doctor has ever been able to point out what is wrong with me, IBS is such a general term and it really doesn’t help me. My worst symptoms are terrible bloating, it feels like I have tons of bricks in my stomach, the intestinal walls push toward the outside and it feels very hard, I can’t eat because it feels so heavy even though I am hungry, Kaiser is a terrible health insurance and doctors don’t want to take the time to find out what is wrong with me. I need help!

Lori

AskDocWeb: There are some things you can do to help yourself. You may have noticed that sometimes the symptoms are worse and sometimes better. If you keep a diary of what you eat you might find the foods that cause problems so that you can avoid them. Read more about IBS here.

Subj: Bloated Badly
Date: 4/24/2009
I recently developed some severe bloating. My stomach is swollen it almost looks like I’m pregnant. I increased my fiber supplement a little because I noticed when I do not have enough fiber I have pressure and severe pain in my abdomin, especially if I stand to long or wear hard or high shoes. What can I do to relieve the bloating created by (I guess) me over doing fiber supplements (mixable fiber, and psyllium husks)?

Bloated Badly

AskDocWeb: If feeling bloating happens every week or every day then it’s a chronic condition and you should check with your doctor to find out if it is something that requires medical attention. If there is no serious medical condition then read the Top 10 Reasons for Feeling Bloated or Gassy and Causes of Bloating for ideas on how you may be able to handle this problem on your own.

Subj: Alka Seltzer for gas
Date: 9/7/2010
when I struggle with gas, finally taking an alkaseltzer stops it. How come?

Carol
AskDocWeb: Alka Seltzer contains simethicone, which spreads silicone antifoams on the surface of aqueous(water based) liquids, forming a film of low surface tension and thus causing collapse of foam bubbles. It is believed that simethicone allows mucus-surrounded gas bubbles in the GI tract to coalesce and be expelled painlessly.

Subj: Bloating daily
Date: 1/24/2011
Wow, I learned so much from this site. Thank you. Now I will put it to the test. I have bloating daily for the past few month. I am hoping these tips will help.

Kate

AskDocWeb: Occasional bloating is one thing but if it continues a long time or recurs frequently it may indicate a problem that needs medical attention so see your doctor.

Subj: Getting older
Date: 4/14/2011
Thank you for the information. I needed to know this since I am getting older.

Joanna

AskDocWeb: Most people notice that they have more gas as they get older. That is just the natural consequence of aging. As we get older our digestive juices are not produced as efficiently. Our ability to break down lactose decreases, which causes more bloating. Lactose is the sugar in milk, cheese and ice cream that bacteria eat, which produces gas.

It happens everyday no matter what
Date: 2/8/2012
Thanks for this page. I will definitely try these out. I am currently in school and have had a very bad problem with gas during class. It seems like it happens everyday no matter what I eat. I think that it has a lot do with anxiety and a fear that I will pass gas because I never have this problem at home. I am never able to relax in school because I am constantly thinking about passing gas. Do you have any tips?

Andy

AskDocWeb: One thing you can do about it is to learn to pass the gas as quietly as possible. When you tense up trying to hold it in, that just makes it louder when the gas does come out.
