Natural health supplements sometimes have unexpected side effects or interactions with medication that can lead to adverse reactions that are sometimes life threatening. The following is a list of cautions that you should be aware of before using Grape Seed Extract (Vitis vinifera). These are referred to as drug/herb interactions.

Warning 1 – Contraindications: Until more is known about the affect of grape seed extract on women who are pregnant or breastfeeding its use is not recommended.

Warning 2 – Antihypertensive drugs: People with high blood pressure should discuss the use of Grape Seed Extract with their doctor before using this supplement.

Used as a natural health remedy: Grape seed extract may be effective in relieving the following symptoms and conditions:

  • atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)
  • osteoarthritis (See other herbs for inflammation)
  • chronic venous insufficiency (when veins have problems sending blood from the legs back to the heart)
  • diabetic retinopathy (an eye problem caused by diabetes)
  • hair loss (alopecia)
  • poor circulation
  • reducing swelling (edema) after an injury or surgery
  • vascular fragility (weakness in small blood vessels)
  • wound healing

Grape seed extract is prepared from the seed of grapes. It is available in capsule and tablet forms. Grape seed extract contains antioxidants, which help prevent cell damage caused by free radicals (molecules that can damage cell function).

Grape seed oil is used to keep skin moist and protect it from the harmful UV rays of the sun.

Side Effects of Grape Seed Extract

When taken by mouth, grape seed extract is generally well tolerated by most people. In clinical trials it has been used safely for up to 8 weeks. The known side effects of using Grape Seed Extract include the following:

  1. dizziness
  2. dry scalp
  3. headache
  4. high blood pressure
  5. hives
  6. indigestion
  7. itchy scalp
  8. nausea
