Subj: Mintop 2% or 5%?
Date: 11/28/2006
Hi, I wanted to know if mintop 2% would cause less irritation than the 5% lotion during winter months.
Ravi
AskDocWeb: Yes it would, as a general rule, the stronger the med the more side effects.
Subj: Scalpmed
Date: 11/29/2006
Hi! A good friend of mine has always asked me about the best hair care product. I am going back to the country and I would like to bring him the best solution for his thinning hair. I saw scalpmed in an infomercial, and they had very convincing testimonials. Would you recommend this? Have you done any research on this? What can we expect from the product. It seems that you have to get a regular supply of this product, and the costs seem prohibitive. Thanks for any info.
Herks
AskDocWeb: No, Scalpmed is not recommended.
Subj: Aldactone and monoxidil
Date: 12/5/2006
I am taking 1/2 an aldactone tablet to control female hair loss – androgenic thinning. I am also using monoxidil once a day 6%. I was going fine until this week- my hair was slowly coming back- it is thin in the area around the part in the middle of my head – no hair had fallen out at all for the past 3 months and I was happy. Now it is falling out again at the rate is was before and I am desperate to know what to do. Do I increase aldactone? Also my body temperature is very high at night- not a fever but uncomfortable, could aldactone cause this? I am 26 years old. Thanks,
Claire
AskDocWeb: Yes, Aldactone can cause a high body temperature, even a fever in some people. This should be reported to your doctor. As for the Minoxidil, people seem to build up a tolerance to it over time and it stops working. Increasing the Aldactone would not compensate for the loss in effectiveness of Minoxidil.
Warning Note: If you are taking Yasmin for birth control, make sure your doctor knows you are also taking Aldactone. The combination could cause a dangerous change in your potassium level.
Subj: Herbal hair shampoo
Date: 12/17/2006
Herbal hair shampoo is a blend of herbs that claim to regrow hair. Please look into this product and tell me what you find about the effectiveness.
Sherida
AskDocWeb: There are many herbal hair shampoos. Are you talking about Nature’s Gate herbal hair shampoo, Shyamla herbal hair shampoo, Lauat herbal hair shampoo, Nutrifolica herbal hair shampoo, Bionexia Herbal Hair Shampoo, Wild Herbal Hair Shampoo, or a home made herbal shampoo? Readers are invited to comment on any of these herbal shampoos.
Please note that there are some herbs that interact with medication.
Subj: Nioxin shampoo?
Date: 12/19/2006
My husband is currently using Nioxin shampoo for hair loss (although he has no problem with thinning hair, he just uses it because his barber tells him to). I have heard rumors that is can cause birth defects. We are preparing to start a family. Should he change shampoos until after we have completed our family?
Sherri
AskDocWeb: The strongest case against Nioxin comes from a coalition of several groups trying to get the cosmetics industry to stop using certain chemicals in everyday consumer products, including Nioxin, chemicals known or suspected of causing cancer, birth defects and other health problems. The groups include Friends of the Earth, Health Care Without Harm, the Environmental Working Group and the Breast Cancer Fund. When in doubt, it’s safer to error on the side of caution. The ingredients in Nioxin can be found here.
Subj: Taking Procerin and Scalpmed
Date: 12/20/2006
Hi, I was wondering if there would be any problems taking Procerin and Scalpmed together. I asked at the Scalpmed website and they recommended taking just their product but I thought I would ask here just to make sure. Thanks for the help.
Nick
AskDocWeb: Of course the Scalpmed people are going to tell you to use only their product, they want your money. That aside, our concern is that using two products together like that will make it impossible to know which one is working or, if a side effect occurs, to know which one is causing it.
Subj: Procerin and Nisim shampoo?
Date: 12/20/2006
I just have a question. How effective is procerin and nisim shampoo? And can I use them together?
Ed
AskDocWeb: Yes, you can use them together and that is our best recommendation.
Subj: Hair loss cures
Date: 12/22/2006
There’s a site called Combat Hair Loss on which a qualified doctor mentions Revivogen as one of only six hair loss cures. Procerin is another. The active ingredients of Revivogen parallel those of Procerin in terms of dealing with DHT, and other ingredients in the mix are claimed to promote new hair growth. Is Revivogen only as bad as you say because it is a topical medication and hence not as effective as Procerin which is both topical and ingested.
Alex
AskDocWeb: We caution you about taking the word of anyone that says there is a cure for hair loss. There are treatments for hair loss but there is no cure. You might be surprised if you read the disclaimer page on the Revivogen website. They disclaim fitness of their products for any particular purpose. They also say they have no liability for damages that result from using their products. What does that sound like to you?
Subj: Women’s Provillus
Date: 1/2/2007
My wife has a hair loss problem since having children and is currently using Rogaine for Women. The results are so-so. I heard about Women’s Provillus. Have you and if so what is your opinion. Thank you!
Jack
AskDocWeb: We’re still collecting feedback on Provillus. So far there hasn’t been enough user reviews to form any conclusions.
Subj: Finasteride dosage
Date: 1/4/2007
I am wondering if 0.25mg finasteride work just as well as 1mg finasteride. And besides that, will taking 0.25mg finasteride reduce the side effects? Hope to get an answer asap. I am currently on 1mg finasteride and have just started on it.
Nicholas
AskDocWeb: The lower dosage equates to a lower chance of getting the libido problems. There hasn’t been any research or feedback on just how effective that lower dosage is, maybe you could report back on your results.
Subj: Procerin with Melancor?
Date: 1/6/2007
Hello, Firstly thank you for such an informative website, which I have found very helpful. My hair has recently started to recede marginally in the temple area and my hairline has moved back about 1cm (at the worst point). I could pretend to myself that it isn’t happening or hope it does not get any worse. However, I’ve decided that it’s best to start on treatment now and hopefully arrest the problem early. Having read all you reviews of the various hairloss products I have now ordered three months supply of procerin tablets and one month supply of the serum. (I hope as I am only applying the serum to the hairline area that it will last longer than one month.) I am currently taking Melancor tablets in order to reduce the appearance of grey hair. These have had a (very marginal) beneficial effect (or maybe I want to believe they have had a marginal effect). Could you tell me if it safe to continue to take the Melancor when I start taking Procerin? As the website is called ‘AskDocWeb’ I presume you are a doctor? Or are you just an interested consumer? Thank you for any information you can give me.
Gerry
AskDocWeb: There are no known side effects of taking Procerin with Melancor but then we have yet to hear from anyone who has successfully used that product. When I called their toll free number, the woman who answered the phone (she sounded elderly) told me about her husband using it. I got the impression they are a “Mom and Pop” business run from their home. They went online April 1st of 2003 but haven’t updated their website for over two years.
This website was started after we found out the hard way that some drugs should not be on the market. We are concerned consumers who have been disillusioned and let down by the medical profession. Hopefully we can spare others some of the trauma that we went through.
