Subj: Scalp med and Minoxidil
Date: 10/17/2007
Hi there, I wanted to know if this product scalp med really works, and how effective it is. Also I wanted to know if you know of any topical solutions that have shown proven effective results. My last question is, how effective is generic minoxidil 5%, and does it have any sexual side effects if taken topically? Please get back to me at your earliest convenience, your response will be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Andrew
AskDocWeb: Scalp Med, like Avacor, seems to be an expensive source of Minoxidil. The only sexual side effect of topical Minoxidil, according to the Mayo Clinic, results from an overdose when too much is absorbed through the skin. The 2% Minoxidil has been shown to stimulate hair growth in about 3 out of 10 male patients and a slightly higher rate in females. The 5% solution has a slightly higher success rate.
Subj: Soy milk but still have hair loss
Date: 10/22/2007
Minoxidil is a product when used will grow peach fuss, but the moment it is not used the hair will still fall out. This is my testimonial. I read it from a professional author. Hair loss is a disease. DHT is what kills your hair roots. Just be thankful you are in good health and get a wig! I drink tons of Soy milk but still have hair loss.
Ken
AskDocWeb: You may want to get your thyroid checked out. Soy milk has been reported to cause hair loss by inhibiting the thyroid function.
Soy milk may cause other problems too. According to an article in Wise Traditions in Food, Farming and the Healing Arts, Spring 2004: “Researchers at the Department of Biological Sciences, Lehigh University in Bethleham, Pennsylvania fed male monkeys different amounts and types of protein over 15 months. The monkeys who received higher amounts of isoflavones from soy protein had higher rates of both aggressive and submissive behavior. In addition, the proportion of time spent by these monkeys in physical contact with other monkeys was reduced by 68 percent, time spent in proximity to other monkeys was reduced 50 percent and time spent alone was increased 30 percent. The unhappy group of monkeys receiving soy took in 125 mg soy isoflavones per day, the amount contained in 2 1/2 cups soy milk, a handful of soy nuts.”
Subj: Couvre and Procerin
Date: 10/22/2007
I currently use couvre, which is a product that darkens the scalp. I was wondering if the product would inhibit hair growth if I used the procerin pills? Would the hair still be able to penetrate and grow through the oil base of the couvre, or should I shave my hair off and use the pills and the serum? Thanks,
Rich
AskDocWeb: We’ve not heard of Couvre causing any problems with hair growth.

AskDocWeb: Nisim Biofactors
Subj: Re: Female Hair Loss
Date: 10/30/2007
I’m a 32 year old female. My hair has always been thin and falling out gradually since college. It is now starting to show. A doctor’s examination showed nothing abnormal about my hormone levels. The only thing that came up was a slight deficiency in zinc. Since then (about 6 months now), I’ve been taking zinc plus birth control pills. Also, for a couple of years I’ve been using Rogaine for women. Nothing is working, in fact, it seems to be getting worse. Please, do you have any advice?
Kate
AskDocWeb: According to the FDA, in the clinical trials, hair regrowth with Minoxidil has not been shown to last longer than 48 weeks so you might save some money by discontinuing that. If possible, it might be worthwhile to find a dermatologist that specializes in hair loss. In the mean time use a shampoo that supports hair growth.
Subj: Nisim combined with Advecia?
Date: 11/3/2007
Is it just as effective to use nisim in combination with advecia? I have been using both and hope one doesn’t counteract the other. I use the advecia pills and nisim shampoo and gel extract. Is this ok to do? Please let me know.
Nisim with advecia?
AskDocWeb: It sounds okay. Now give it some time to work and keep track of your results.
Subj: Zulvera
Date: 11/11/2007
Do you know anything about a shampoo called Zulvera? It was recommended on a web site that claimed to have scientifically studied hair loss products. I’d like to try it, but would like more information first. Thanks,
Lisa
AskDocWeb: Looks like they started their online business in July of 2006. Their business is located in India. Whatever you have heard about Zulvera should be reevaluated because the shampoo has changed. It appears that the ingredients changed and none of the original ingredients are used in their reformulated product. The company is not answering emails – not a good sign.
Subj: Ancient Indian hair recipe
Date: 11/12/2007
Ancient Indian hair recipe seems to work. It does take care of the dandruff and even helped my psoriasis, and leaves the hair looking very healthy – it is also growing fine type hair as the add states. I have been using it less than a month, so I will have to see if the fine hair growth turns into something more substantial.

Subj: Female hair loss
Date: 11/20/2007
Hi, I am a 37 year old female whom has recently discovered has hyperthyroidism approx. 5/6 weeks ago. I went to my physician as I felt hair thinning. I have since been taking 40mg a day 20mg twice a day of carbimazole, will my hair grow back?
Donna
AskDocWeb: You may want to talk with your doctor about an alternative as one of the side effects of Carbimazole is hair loss. Although less widely used, Propylthiouracil is an alternative medication. There may also be a different way of managing your over-active thyroid such as the use of radioactive iodine.
Subj: Is it okay?
Date: 11/24/2007
HI, Just wondering if it’s ok to use Provillus and Rogaine…or Provillus and Nism Biofactors.. pls let me know, thanks,
Kana
AskDocWeb: Yes, either combination is okay.
Subj: Mintop hair loss
Date: 11/29/2007
Sir, I am 28 years of age. I was experiencing hair loss since 24. I started using Mintop for 1-2 years. Had reasonably good results for hair loss. At least the hair loss was stopped. 3-4 months back I stopped applying it. Now, again hair loss started and this time very heavily. I am very worried coz I have lost all my frontal hairs and also top part is getting lessened and bald. Also my hair are getting very thin. What should I do. I want to have my hair back. Do you recommend me starting the mintop treatment again. Do you think it will help. Should I go for something like NISIM shampoo and extract. Do you think it will help. Please suggest me any alternative, which you feel most suitable for me. Please suggest me a suitable remedy to regrow hair on my head and thicken it. I am very worried about my hair and it has started affecting my work also.
Montey
AskDocWeb: The problem with any hair loss product is that you have to keep using it to keep the benefits. Once you stop, your hair loss begins again and continues. We do not recommend Mintop long-term because it has not been shown to be effective beyond 48 weeks. And yes, Nisim would likely help.
Subj: 3 months pregnant
Date: 12/1/2007
I am 3 months pregnant. I have been having severe hair loss since the last 7 months. I thought getting pregnant would correct this problem, so I never took any treatments as we were planning for a family. But even after being pregnant the hair loss is the same. I started using NISIM Shampoo since the last 2 weeks and noticed my hair loss has really stopped. Now my concern is, if NISIM Shampoo is safe to use during pregnancy…please help because I am so concerned.
Ameen
AskDocWeb: You can relax, there are NO harmful side effects and Nisim is safe to use during pregnancy.
Hair Loss News from Germany, University of Bonn, Institute of Human Genetics
Until recently, many scientists assumed that hair follicles were a non-renewable resource and once they stop working, it was thought that the scalp was doomed to gradual exposure but this may not be true.
For the past six years an international research team has been investigating the cause of a rare hereditary form of hair loss called Hypotrichosis simplex. The disease is inherited and affects both men and women. Sufferers typically begin to go bald during childhood and hair loss advances with age, especially around the scalp.
Scientists looking at this disease from the viewpoint of a genetic defect have discovered P2RY5, a gene responsible for this form of hair loss. Researchers have also identified an endogenous messenger that binds to the receptor in the hair follicle. The receptor prevents certain receptor structures from being correctly formed on the surface of hair follicle cells. Understanding this gene adds to our understanding of the hair growth process and opens up new paths to effective therapies.
As Professor Dr. Markus Nöthen, Chair of Genetic Medicine at Bonn University explains, “The defective receptor structure falls into the category of what are known as G-protein-coupled receptors.” This is good news, because, “they are particularly well suited as points of impact for drug treatments.” This shows the path to developing new active agents.
Dr. Ivar von Kügelgen from Bonn’s Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology says, “We can now search selectively for related substances that may be used in therapies for hair loss.” This is exciting because these new medicines will be able to benefit patients suffering from very different types of hair loss.
More details will appear in the March edition of “Nature Genetics”
