Subj: Premenopausal woman
Date: 12/12/2007
I am a 53 year old premenopausal woman with a receding and thinning hairline for six or more years due to genetics. My dermatologist has recommended only Rogaine, which I have used for at least five years. I now read on this website that Rogaine is not effective for the hairline. My doctor says that once I am in menopause that I can try Propecia. I am not thrilled with taking a medication and prefer natural remedies but the key is I am willing to do what works. What is your recommendation for what I should do that would be most effective?
Kathy
AskDocWeb: Studies show that better results are achieved with a combination of hair loss treatments rather than just one treatment alone. The best hair growth treatment for you might include an internal treatment such as a multi-vitamin supplement combined with an external treatment such as a hair re-growth treatment shampoo (Nisim).
If you are taking any drugs that may be contributing to your hair loss, you might ask your doctor for alternatives (See Drugs that cause hair loss). Check your diet to make sure you are getting the nutrition that is required for healthy hair growth. Hair loss can occur if the diet is inadequate in the vitamin B6, biotin, inositol, folic acid and minerals like magnesium, sulfur and zinc. The B vitamins, especially B5 (Pantothenic acid and B3 (niacin), are especially important for hair growth. On the other hand, taking large doses of vitamin A (100,000 IU or more daily) for a long period of time can cause hair loss, but stopping does reverse this problem.
Subj: Losing hair quick

AskDocWeb: We suggest you visit a dermatologist to determine the cause of your hair loss before deciding what to do to get it back.

Subj: Raw unprocessed petroleum
Date: 12/19/2007
Hi, I’m 24 and for the past 4 years or so I’ve been experiencing thinning hair and alot of hair loss on the top of my scalp, not my hairline, I’ve heard that raw unprocessed petroleum would make your hair grow back. Would you happen to know if this is true? Where could I get something like this if it actually works? What would you suggest I use to at least make my hair thicker? Thanks for your help,
Leo
AskDocWeb: Raw unprocessed petroleum is a gooey liquid that contains hundreds of different types of hydrocarbons. With all the consumer protection laws we have, it is doubtful that you will find this on the market.
Subj: Scalp Med
Date: 12/21/2007
I see you have two “non-recommendations” for scalp med but you do not comment why. Could you please explain your findings? Thanks,
Brenda
AskDocWeb: Scalp Med, like Avacor, seems to be an expensive source of Minoxidil.
Subj: Biohairs
Date: 12/22/2007
Just wondering if anyone has used Biohairs and if so is it any good? Regards,
Ron
Subj: Pros and cons of injection
Date: 1/13/2008
My dermatologist recommend the injection on the scalp for my hair loss. What are the pros and cons. Also have you heard of Hair Sequence?
Rhonda
AskDocWeb: It is difficult to comment without knowing what your dermatologist would be injecting into your scalp. Your dermatologist is supposed to explain the pros and cons of any purposed treatment.
The Hair Sequence process custom blends your own hair with human hair. It is one of the more expensive processes with prices starting at $2,500.00.

Subj: Levothyroxine
Date: 2/10/2008
I am a female with underactive thyroid and I am taking 150mg of Levothyroxine which has caused severe hair loss. I am considering taking provillus as the reviews I have read seem to be pretty good. Would the provillus have any effect on the Levothyroxine. Kind regards.
Paula
AskDocWeb: We would be concerned about taking anything that affects hormone levels while on Levothyroxine and the saw palmetto in Provillus would do that. Please check with your doctor before taking any supplement.
Subj: Would it be wise?
Date: 2/10/2008
Hi there, thanks for the great site. I still have a lot of hair, but recently I’ve noticed that if my hair gets greasy, the parting on the top of my head is noticeably larger than before (almost looks a bald spot, using two mirrors, but not quite). When I stand under a bright light, I can see a fair amount of my scalp. I have been losing a lot of hairs in the bath and shower recently, and my hairline has ‘matured’ into the usual curved shape, I’m not sure I’d quite say it was receding. I also have a history of MPB in my family I don’t want to overreact, but would it be wise for me to start trying something like Procerin to try to prevent any hair loss? Is there any reason (other than financial ones) not to? Many thanks,
James
AskDocWeb: If you are being treated for any hormonal problems then check with your doctor first. Otherwise there is no reason to delay. Remember, the best results are achieved when hair loss is treated early.
Subj: Can’t grow decent facial hair
Date: 2/14/2008
My name is Jake, I am 21 years old, and I can’t grow decent facial hair… I have little on my face, neck and chin, but it’s all pretty thin and white. I was wondering if it might be safe to use rogaine or other minoxidil products on my face to try speed up my facial hair growth, and achieve a beard.
Jake
AskDocWeb: Yes, you could do that but once a beard starts growing it is likely to continue growing so be sure that is what you want.
Subj: Best product to restore hair
Date: 2/27/2008
I’m a young man losing my hair on top and I haven’t got the right shaped head to pull it off. Could you please tell me what would be the best product to restore my once lovely hair? Thanks,
Pete
AskDocWeb: That depends on the cause, when a young man has a problem with hair loss it can indicate a health problem. We suggest you first get a physical to rule out thyroid or other medical conditions that may need attention. If you are healthy then start with the simple solutions (and least expensive), make sure you are eating a balanced diet and use a shampoo that fights hair loss. Give it a few months and if the hair loss persists, then try Procerin (a supplement) and save Propecia (a prescription drug) for a last resort.
Subj: If you stop
Date: 3/1/2008
Hey if you stop taking this will it make it worst?
Danny
AskDocWeb: No, the hair loss will just go back to normal loss.

Subj: Laser combs?
Date: 3/5/2008
What are do you think of those laser combs? I am a 29 year old woman. Do you think it works for female pattern baldness?
MM
AskDocWeb: We still have doubts about laser combs. It is disturbing that some companies claim FDA approval but don’t tell you that the FDA approval is only in regards to safety and not effectiveness. Read more feedback. Hair Loss – 14 – 15 – 16 – Page 17 – 18 – 19 – 20 – Last page 40
