Please advise me of the best product I may use – having always had thin hair I got hair extensions – they became very matted and as a result most of my hair fell out where the matts were and even where the hair wasn’t matted the hair has thinned drastically. I now have very little hair left and bald spots and some patches with hardly any hair. In this situation, what is the best product to use? I have been taking standard over the counter hair vitamins, sea kelp and also silica, but an unwanted side effect is my hairline has started spreading into my forehead which I think is the result of the silica, do you agree? I think I will have to stop taking the silica. I really need a solution that will encourage most rapid hair growth and also restrengthen my hair follicles. Can you recommend? Thank-you.

AskDocWeb: You need to see a dermatologist to find out what is causing the hair loss before a “best product” can be decided. If you are past the reproductive age then Propecia may be an option, but a doctor will have to write a prescription for you. A general physical with a thyroid test may also be a good idea.

I bought rosemary and lavender plants and purchased the ginger at a market. Lavender is not necessary…the main ones are rosemary and ginger… Cut some rosemary and use the leaves only, dried is best. Lavender flowers, dried is best… and ginger with the skin peeled… use equal amounts of each and chop them up… place them in a pot and boil for 10 minutes and let cool and strain…and that’s it. Just massage the tonic into your scalp where you need it and let it dry and absorb for a while and wash off. You can use it in the shower as well just make sure your rub it in well and let sit long enough for it to absorb into your scalp… concentration is up to you… I’m just making it less concentrated since I shed last time…but I’m better now. I was wondering if these ingredients would really work for dandruff and hair regrowth. Thanks,
Dinger
AskDocWeb: We have seen no evidence that those herbs would work for hair regrowth. If anyone tries this be sure to share your results here.
Subj: Hair Stem Cell Therapy?
Date: 4/11/2008
I read very recently that Dr. Mercola who publishes an Internet health newsletter and television’s Dr. Phil have begun Hair Stem Cell Therapy. Dr. Mercola reports that he has a 90% chance of having a full head of hair within the next twelve months due to the therapy. Is there any further information regarding this?
Nick
AskDocWeb: We didn’t find anything more than rumors and a lot of hype. It appears that Dr. Mercola preaches about healthy diets and sells his products to support his claims.

Subj: Hairs are getting smaller in diameter
Date: 4/29/2008
I am a 60+ female with overall thinning. The hair is not falling, but the hairs are getting smaller in diameter. Do you know of anything you have reviewed that may help. I am using Minoxidil for 2 years now with no results.
Ann
AskDocWeb: When the diameter of the hair shaft starts shrinking, hair loss is not far behind. We suggest you get a physical and make sure your overall health is good. That would also rule out the possibility of a thyroid problem or other medical condition that might cause hair loss. You might also try a shampoo that fights hair loss such as Nisim Biofactors.

Subj: Pain in upper arms and left leg
Date: 5/15/2008
I have been using minoxidil. I believe it is helping my hair loss problem. However, suddenly, I have pain in my upper arms and left leg. Serious pain which prohibits freedom of movement. I am wondering if it could be a side effect. Ever hear of anyone else complaining of this problem? I take glucosamine and chrondroiton, co Q-10, Sam E, & famotidine. I dropped the famotidine a few days ago in favor of Biotin bile tablet and enzymes. Once weekly I take an estradial. The OTC drugs I have taken for years. The famotidine is fairly recent. About three months. I am female. 74. In great health and still working. The pain is really bothering me.
Joy
AskDocWeb: We have not heard of that happening because of minoxidil but any serious pain that prohibits your freedom of movement should be checked out by your physician.
Please note that there are health concerns about using glucosamine.

Sir, I suffering from hair loss from last year I’m 18, my father is also bald, I think its genetic so which medicine I should use?
Guru
AskDocWeb: We leave that up to your dermatologist after they have determined the cause of your hair loss. When you call one, ask if they specialize in hair loss or if they can refer you to a dermatologist that does specialize in hair loss.
Subj: Feeling tired and salt cravings
Date: 6/6/2008
I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 4 years ago. I have been taking levoxl ever since. My hair has not stopped falling out and I’m not sure what to do. I don’t know if the birth control I’m taking is contributing to the problem. I just started taking iron and primrose oil in the last month and still don’t know if that will be helpful. If you have any advice please let me know. Also in the last two weeks I have felt really tired and had weird salt cravings- any thoughts? I feel like I’m falling apart.
Mckenzie
AskDocWeb: It sounds like it may be time for a physical checkup.

AskDocWeb: The company that makes Zulvera is not answering emails – not a good sign. Please take a look at our page on scams, it will give you a few pointers about recognizing a scam.
Subj: Beauty 4 Ashes
Date: 7/11/2008
Hello, I am a 27 year old young adult man who was diagnosed with Germinoma Brain Cancer in 02′, recurred in 04′. I’ve been through chemotherapy, radiation, bone marrow transplant for the past 3 1/2 yrs. I’m partially bald on the top of my scalp due to extensive radiation of the brain. I was browsing online for hair re-growth systems and noticed on a forum someone talking about the “Beauty 4 Ashes (TM) A Double Portion Super Hair Growth System” product that it helped them get their hair back. I’m very curious to know if their “Super Hair Growth System” can actually perform miracles and help me re-grow my hair? I looked up the Beauty 4 Ashes website but I’m having difficulty locating it. The website and company revolves around a religious Christian devotion as it’s identity and purpose. I contacted the customer service to ask them certain products and their ingredients but they haven’t responded and don’t appear to be so helpful.
Justin
AskDocWeb: It is a bad sign when they don’t respond. Companies that don’t talk to possible customers typically don’t stay in business very long.
Subj: Zulvera scam
Date: 7/29/2008
Those asking for Zulvera, indeed its a scam. You can just do some tech research and you will the only site giving a positive review and the prodcut site are registered under the same domain servers in India…so for me, this is a clear scam.

Kenny
AskDocWeb: Sorry Kenny, we don’t have any information on that product.
Subj: Which is the better option?
Date: 7/30/2008
Hi, I am in need of some advice. I have a full head of hair which is thinning and receding. 5 weeks ago I started taking rogaine foam to enhance the thinning areas and to combat my receding hairline. However as I still have a full head of hair I have noticed more hair falling out than normal and this has persisted for the five weeks I have been taking it. I am worried about this and have read that it kills the old follicles and does not replace them with new ones at the receding hairline. Also as I have hair at the vertex, but thinning that the same is happening here to. Is this the case with rogaine 5% minoxidil foam? And should I stop using it. I also take finasteride 5mg half a tablet three times a week which I have been taking for a year and a half. I have done a little bit of research and came across provillus, can you please tell me if you can use this product along with finasteride 5mg? As I find using finasteride quite useful. Or which of the two is a better option? Many thanks,
Gary
AskDocWeb: We suggest you use only one hair loss product for the first three or four months to find out how it will affect you and see if any side effects show up. Side effects can occur anytime but they most often show up in the first three months.

Are there any products that you endorse for hair loss? Mine is getting very thin.
Diana
AskDocWeb: We recommend that you at least use a shampoo that fights hair loss like Nisim Biofactors. Nisim has been clinically proven 85.7% effective and is backed by a 100 day 100% money back guarantee. If you want something more active then get minoxidil from your local drugstore.
