Subj: Minoxidil with Proscar
Date: 10/27/2009
I have been using Minoxidil 6% for a year and have been on Proscar for 6 months. I cant really tell if its gotten better or worst. I’m loosing hair on one side on my head. Is this common and is there a different way of dealing with this?

Max

AskDocWeb: It may be that your hair loss is just showing up on one side first and will eventually progress to the other side. This is common with temple hair loss where one temple recedes or thins faster than the other temple. Or you could have “patchy” hair loss. The alternative ways of dealing with it are listed here.

Subj: Chinese medicine
Date: 11/20/2009
I had great success with another class of products, that being Chinese medicine. The theory behind it is really quite simple: the meridians that pass over the areas of thinning and balding are simply undernourished. Think of it this way: all food that goes in your mouth does not spread evenly throughout the body unless you are healthy both physically and emotionally. There are genetic and epigenetic influences that make the commonly involved meridians involved with hairloss more replete with nourishment in both a static and dynamic manner. Thymus gland and most any organ meats are more nutritionally dense (see Paul Pitchford’s book “Healing with Whole Foods” for prescriptive differences) and by placing this topically on the part of the “loop” that is undernourished you begin to bridge that gap while also just merely “filling the bucket”(I use these terms parenthetically to emphasize the folk-understanding of conceptual differences between how most people consider allopathicly[buckets/organs] as opposed to Chinese medicine concepts[loops/meridians] which are not as widely known).

The problem with such nourishing foods/herbs is that they are generally of a very Warming nature which dries the scalp causing that dandruff you hear everyone complaining about. Such Warming items can also be contraindicated in many types of illness and imbalance; many a time I would have anger/irritation/frustration brought on by using herbal shampoos if I was experiencing a bout of Stagnation / Heat / DampHeat / BloodDeficiency / YinDeficiency (feel free to look those up).

The growth rate of my hair literally tripled over a 4 month period I used herbal formulas that helped both my specific issue with hair loss as well other health issues. I mention this because you won’t get anywhere by circumventing a TCM practitioner and buying some hair growth catchall herbal formula from an online herb store. You’re best bet is getting your whole body in “alignment” by an acupuncturist/herbalist so that you can assimilate nutrients better, have smoother and more controlled emotions, better habits that engender these things, more realistic and self-aware relationships with all aspects in your life, and that the human body is an animal body with cognitive / emotional / intellectual “spiritual” aspects and that not all individuals are capable of everything they’ve been led to believe. There are limits that when passed will begin to effect both yourself and any offspring you may come to bear (and obviously all your relationships and the mental/social development of those offspring).

Those that this product didn’t work for probably have, in terms of Chinese medicine, a disproportionate congenital meridian & emotional weighting and/or lifestyle/habits/diet that they will have to come to terms with as placing them on one end of a spectrum that is ‘human specimen quality'(search out “constitution”; also, Giovanni Maciocia’s book on googlebooks “Diagnosis in Chinese Medicine”). I haven’t checked the price of this but it’s probably much more costly than the herbal fraction of an on-going Chinese medicine treatment therapy.

Subj: Minoval hair regrowth system
Date: 12/1/2009
After having my daughter 2 yrs ago, I noticed my hair kept shedding. My hair is healthy but I wanted it a little longer. Would you recommend minoval for me? When I decide to stop using it, will all hair out?

Kpierre

AskDocWeb: The Minoval hair regrowth system seems to be a new product. Looks like it is available on Amazon.com for a reasonable price but we couldn’t find enough information on it to decide one way or the other.

Subj: Does Follinex work?
Date: 12/14/2009
Yes but AskDocWeb, does Follinex work, and I found the ingredience on line, you said it might not be a scam, but DOES IT WORK! That’s all I want to know, please.

Lamarr

AskDocWeb: There are no reports from anyone that has had success with Follinex but 3 reports from those who say it had no effect on their hair loss.

Subj: Just started to bald
Date: 1/9/2010
Firstly…great website. Very helpful. Secondly, I just started to bald and I have searched the internet looking for a solution. I keep coming across provillus and nisim biofactors shampoo/extract. Claims are that both Provillus and Nisim biofactors can cause initial shedding but Provillus claim there are no side effects. So if I were to take Provillus would I experience any shedding? I also keep coming across Rogaine. Any opinions on this product would be helpful. Many thanks.

Daniel

AskDocWeb: Only a small percentage of users experience a period of increased shedding and there is no way to know if you will until you try the products. The active ingredient in Rogaine is minoxidil and there are currently 31 pages of
feedback about minoxidil.

Subj: Follicare?
Date: 2/5/2010
Do you have a review for the hairloss product called Follicare? They offer it without the addition of minoxidal if the person requests that it be excluded. It includes shampoo, a supplement and topical product (without the blood pressure product added).

Linda

AskDocWeb: We have not yet evaluated Follicare and so far there is no feedback from anyone who has tried it.

Subj: Zulvera Herbal Shampoo
Date: 3/8/2010
Please don’t waste your money on ZULVERA HERBAL SHAMPOO. I have been using it since November 09 and if anything the decline in hair loss has been increased. If you want an equivelent go to your nearest pound shop.

Subj: Undergoing chemotherapy
Date: 3/25/2010
MY mother is undergoing chemotherapy. Which product do you recommend for that type of hair loss? She is over 40. This website is great!

Christa
AskDocWeb: Unfortunately there is no product that can prevent hair loss during or after chemotherapy. There is some research that suggests minoxidil (Rogaine for Women) may speed up the regrowth of hair once treatment is completed. In the mean time, hats, scarves, and wigs are good alternatives. Most doctors will write a prescription for a wig if you ask. That way the cost may be covered by your health insurance.

Subj: Minoxodil drops
Date: 3/31/2010
Hi! I was checking out Provillus, and after reading all the user reviews I’ve decided not to buy any. What I found most effective was Minoxodil drops – 1ml morning and night placed directly on the scalp, Saw Palmetto tablets and other herbal supplements like China Meds that improve hair, skin and nails. I also have a laser helmet I bought from a hair loss studio which really helps the quality of my hair improve…also grows faster! So far so good…

Subj: Woman with tubes tied?
Date: 4/4/2010
Is it ok for a woman with tubes tied to take provillus and propecia at same time? I have androgenic alopecia with diffuse thinning and hair texture change to fuzz. Yet all my bloodwork is normal and I’ve had everything you can think of checked. Thanks.

Janicen
AskDocWeb: Even though we have not seen any clinical studies of Propecia involving women where that drug was effective in treating hair loss, you could ask your dermatologist about it. The “Provillus complete solution” for women, which includes minoxidil, may be a better choice.
