Subj: Concerned about saw palmetto
Date: 7/7/2005
I am glad that I went through your site about hair loss study of procerin and other hair loss remedies. I thank you guys for putting together such a wealth of information about hair loss. I am 25 years old (will turn 26 this August) I’ve lost about 80% of my hair since last 4 years. I have good hair line but my hair is sparce. Now I believe that Saw palmetto extract definitely has positive effect in reverse hair loss. But my question is, are they safe enough in the long run? does it effect my sexual life? If I use saw palmetto can I have children in future? Even if I have any side effects can they be reversed if I stop using the product?

These concerns are killing me now. How much is safe and recommended intake of saw palmetto extract for hair loss? I am concerned about 1500 mg of saw palmetto extract in procerin. Do you have any information on Hair Genesis products? I am considering between Hair Genesis and Procerin. I would really appreciate any feed back for my questions. I would update you guys with any +/- results for any treatments in future. I really appreciate Askdocweb for doing this. Thanks,

Shane

AskDocWeb: Saw palmetto is used (in combination with seven herbs – PC-SPES) to treat prostate cancer using up to 2000mg daily. The most common side effect is an upset stomach. The only side effect that we know of to watch out for is chest pains in a small number of cases. If that happens, discontinue use. The few that did have side effects report that they disappeared within weeks of discontinuing the saw palmetto.

In 2004, we took a quick look at Hair Genesis but got stopped after reading their guarantee. With so much double-talk and special conditions, it is doubtful that anyone ever gets a refund. Reading that guarantee convinced us that they don’t believe in their own product.

Update: We are adding pages to detail the drug/herb interactions so you can check the side effects of saw palmetto here.

Subj: RK19 for hair loss?
Date: 7/5/2005
Hello, I was wondering if you have heard anything about a new natural hairloss remedy called RK19?

Tyler

AskDocWeb: It looks like their claims do not comply with FDA regulations. And their “after” photos appear to have been “touched up” which makes it look like they are trying to deceive viewers.

Subj: Looking for NYC opinion
Date: 7/8/2005
I’ve been experiencing hair loss/thinning for quite some time now. I’ve been to two different dermatologist and was told that I have seborrhic dermatitis by one and end stage scarring alopecia by the other. I’m looking for a third doctor to give me a proper diagnosis of what is going on with my hair. I am 31 now and this has been going on since I was 26. I’m sceptical to try all these stuff/products that has been highlighted on this site. Any good dermatologist out there in NYC that I can try!

Subj: Procede-Hair
Date: 7/28/2005
Hello, I was considering purchasing a new product on the market called Procede-Hair and wanted to know your input. Thank you,

Fernando

AskDocWeb: Looks like this is a cosmetic product that improves the appearance of your hair. It does not help grow hair or prevent its loss.

In order to qualify for a refund you must send the company your receipt and three photographs of the top of your head; a before picture, another during the application and a third 60 days later.

Any info on RK19 Hair Growth? Thanks,

Tom

Subj: Difference between Procerin and Propecia
Date: 8/5/2005
Hi, just a quick question regarding hair loss treatment. I’ve been taking procerin for around a month (bit early to see any changes). I started as it stated no sexual side effects compared to prescription medications e.g. propecia. However if both work by inhibiting action of 5 alpha reductase i.e. preventing formation of Dihydrotestosterone, why does one cause sexual side effects and the other one not? Thanking you in advance,

Khalid

AskDocWeb: It has to do with the difference between the two. Propecia achieves its results by the use of a powerful chemical called finasteride, which is why it requires a prescription. By comparison, Procerin is a gentle combination of herbs and minerals. As an analogy, you could think of it as the difference between using force and encouragement to get something done. Both produce results but using force often produces unwanted side effects.

Subj: Great results
Date: 8/5/2005
I’m 24 years old and my hair has been thinning for the last few years. I’ve been using the Nioxin system for the last 3 months. So far I’ve had great results. I have no further hairloss and my hair has been regrowing in all thinning areas. I got results the first month. I’ve been doing some research and most of these products get the best results when used in conjunction with other products. In hopes of getting better and quicker results I just started taking procerin. Maybe this will boost hair growth even more for me. But nioxin is definitely worth the money.

Subj: Thymuskin
Date: 8/8/2005
I don’t see anything about Thymuskin shampoo and treatment on your website. It’s for hair loss. Do you know anything about it?

Heather

AskDocWeb: Thanks for pointing out another product for hair loss. We have added it to the list and welcome your feedback about it.

Subj: Questions about hair growth
Date: 8/8/2005
Do not know if you answer these types of questions, how long does hair take to grow back to full thickness? I have heard 3 months, but find that hard to believe, and if your scalp is inflamed, sore, will that effect how long it will take to grow back. Thanks for the amazing website, may your journey through life be a safe one.

James

AskDocWeb: This depends on the reason for the hair loss. If the hair loss was caused by chemotherapy, that is very different from ordinary hair loss. If your scalp is inflamed and sore, that will affect the way your hair grows, if it grows at all. In order for hair to get a full thickness, it may take a year and it doesn’t fill in the same for everyone.

Subj: Frequent orgasm and hair loss
Date: 8/13/2005
I am 24 years at age and have been having an orgasm ever since I know I can have one. My father has the family history of baldness in the crown but it seems as though everyone else in the family has a full head of hair. I was thinking it could be my frequent orgasm per day. I will like to be advised if I try this new product Advecia, will it regrow my hair thick because it is really thin at the top of my head. I’ve tried propecia but it robs me of my semen production and sex life. Yours respectfully,

Chris

AskDocWeb: There is no known connection between the number of orgasms and hair loss. If anything, the opposite would be true because sex increases blood circulation and good circulation is good for hair growth. We are still assessing the feedback about Advecia and would welcome your opinion about this product.

Subj: Follinex for hair loss?
Date: 8/18/2005
I am a nurse working with a cardiologist. A patient of ours is wanting to use follinex. She is on cardiac medications as well as coumadin. I have been unsuccessful at trying to get a complete list of ingredients in this medicine to have sufficient information if this is truly safe for her to take. Would you be able to get me a list of ingredients in follinex for the doctors review?

Kim

AskDocWeb: Sorry, it doesn’t look like it wouldn’t be worth the effort. While this product may not be a scam it has several of the indications of one. They expect you to buy something that was created by a so-called doctor who has no references, without knowing what’s in it or where it comes from. No thanks! And it is suspicious that the domain name for follinex sells advertising for totally unrelated products.

Update: The manufacturer is now publishing the
Follinex ingredients

Subj: Scalpmed?
Date: 8/16/2005
Do you know anything about Scalpmed?

Bob

AskDocWeb: A little, the important thing to know is that the active ingredient is minoxidil. We have no feedback good or bad about their product.

Subj: Kevis?
Date: 8/16/2005
Do you have any information on Kevis, would you recommend it?

Dion

AskDocWeb: Sorry, no information or feedback on Kevis.

Subj: Thymuskin
Date: 8/21/2005
I saw some reference to Thymuskin on your website from February of 2004. Do you know of anyone who has tried this product, and if so, what the results were?

Jane

AskDocWeb: Please see Thymuskin feedback here.

Subj: Sulfur
8/26/2005
I have been taking MSM an organic sulfur for about a year. It is a natural anti-inflamitory and is used for many other things, look it up. But it also makes your hair and fingernails grow, it takes about 3 months to start working. It worked for me I had thinning hair on top now I have new hair coming in everywhere.

PC

AskDocWeb: This sounds like you have been had. Sulfur is an element and by definition, none of the elements can be organic. Have you ever heard of organic helium, organic uranium, or organic copper? No, there is no such thing.

Subj: Kevis products?
9/1/2005
Have you done any studies or heard anything about Kevis products? Does it work at all or is it a waste of money?

Tom

AskDocWeb: No feedback to tell if it is a waste of money or not, but we want you to carefully read the guarantee of any new product you are considering.

Subj: Losing my hair?
Date: 9/4/2005
Hello, I am a 20 year old male and I recently started thinking I may be losing my hair. My father and his father don’t have any hair loss problems, but my mother’s father does. My problem is I am not sure if I am losing my hair or not. When I run gel though my hair (especially when I haven’t taken a shower) there are strands of hair that stick to my hand. Also, there are hairs on my bed. I am not sure if that is normal or not. I can see my scalp, but I am not sure if that is normal or not. The thing is, I don’t seem to have a receding hairline. I don’t know if I should start taking a preventive hair loss pill, but I really, really don’t want to go bald. It could be that I am just freaking out about nothing, but I am not sure. Please help! Thank you,

Alex

AskDocWeb: It’s normal to lose about a hundred or so hairs a day. If you and those around you don’t see any thinning then you may not have anything to worry about.

Subj: Hair loss product for the hairline
Date: 9/14/2005
What is the most effective treatment for thinning hair at the hairline and towards the front of the scalp?

AskDocWeb: Sorry to say there is nothing guaranteed to help grow hair at the hairline. The best we can recommend is a combination of Procerin and Rogaine.
