Eucalyptus oil poisoning
Date: 4/17/2016
Dr. Pls my 3yrs old son drank eucalyptus oil, can it in any way affect him, though he has been taken to hospital and is still medication, thanks
AUSTIN
AskDocWeb: If swallowed, eucalyptus oil can cause seizures as well as a number of other serious symptoms. Survival past 48 hours is usually a good sign that they will recover. If any damage to the kidneys has occurred, it may take several months to heal. Drowsiness may persist for several days.
In case of poisoning seek immediate medical help. Do NOT make the person throw up unless told to do so by poison control or a health care professional.

Marshmallow root?
Date: 7/27/2016
I have been taking marshmallow root for bladder issues, and was just wondering if for any reason it would show up on a drug test? I have read so much about it and everyone says it’s safe, I just want to make sure because I can’t afford to loose my job. Thanks
Melinda
AskDocWeb: Marshmallow root is not something that shows up on a drug test for drugs of abuse. However, the list of things that do is extensive.

How long does saw palmetto stay in the body?
Date: 11/8/2016
I took one dose of saw palmetto 300mg 2 days ago and I’ve had nasty side effects mixed with an MAO. Considering i took only one dose how long will it take before I can’t start taking my MAO again?
Jason
AskDocWeb: No reports in published literature were found that clearly identified the half-life of saw palmetto. However, since most sources say to stop using saw palmetto at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery, that should give you some indication as to how long it persists in the body.

Rosemary
Nicki
AskDocWeb: Rosemary is already on the list. Is there anything you would like to add?
Date: 1/6/2017
So I’m confused because different websites say different things, some say it can raise blood sugar and cause diabetes some say it helps prevent diabetes. Some say it raises cholesterol some say it lowers it, also roughly whats a good dose that wont effect my liver. I am curently taking two tea spoons/cups of of tea a day of the dried leaves and letting it soak in the boiled water for 5 minutes each time is that a safe amout? Also can gotu kola make you dehydrated? thanks for your time.
Ryan
AskDocWeb: Sorry Ryan, we are a little confused. When you start a sentence with the word “Also” that implies a possible change in subject. Because of this it is not clear what the subject is in the first part of your email. Is that about gotu kola or another herb?
Mullein in liquid form
Date: 1/17/2017
I have been told to take Mullein for my asthma, I took the recommended liquid dose in 2 oz of water and felt horrible within 20 mins. Felt like my heart was racing and skipping beats for over an hour then after felt super relaxed. It hasn’t done anything for my asthma, in fact I think I was coughing more. Are there any side effects to this herb in liquid form? I can’t find anything on it besides how great it is in tea form.
Karen
AskDocWeb: Did you make the liquid form yourself or buy it premade? If you bought it, what was the brand name and from whom did you buy it? It is important that in making the liquid form that the flowers are inspected so that no seed are used in making the liquid or tea. The seeds of contain rotenone, a toxic substance which may cause adverse side effects if it is ingested. According to reports at the PAN Pesticides Database, ingesting rotenone might induce convulsions, diarrhea, abdominal cramps or vomiting.
