Herbs have been used for centuries to relieve the pain of inflammation. This articles explores the most effective herbs used for their anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties.

  1. Turmeric is strongest most effective herb for inflammation. It’s the main spice in curry. This is what gives the yellow color to table mustard. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties and is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent, meaning it is great for disinfecting cuts and burns. It is a very versatile herb used on many foods.   2. Ginger is a tasty addition to many foods, from meats and vegetables to drinks and desserts. It has been appreciated for centuries for its anti-inflammatory properties. Scientific research confirms this herb’s anti-inflammatory power. It’s an excellent herb to relieve migraines as well as other forms of pain.   3. Chamomile Flower If you are familiar with classic children’s tales, you may remember Peter Rabbit. When Peter was feeling ill, his mother gave him chamomile tea. As it turns out she knew what she was doing! Scientific studies demonstrate chamomile is an excellent anti-inflammatory and is well-known to help with stomach aches but it’s helpful with pain elsewhere too.   4. Fenugreek (which is Latin for “green hay”) is another excellent anti-inflammatory. Studies have even shown it can reduce high triglyceride blood levels! Some say it tastes similar to maple syrup. The greens and sprouts of Fenugreek go well in salads and the seeds provide excellent seasoning to a variety of meats, stews, and sauces.   5. Rosemary contains salicin which is a natural form of glycoside, which is the same source from which aspirin is made. It works by naturally relieving nerve and muscle tension, and is very good for chronic headaches. Research shows that Rosemary may even help prevent cancer and age-related skin damage! This herb can be found in most grocery stores and is easy to grow in a garden or pot at home. Rosemary is an excellent herb for flavoring salad dressings, meats, soups, stews, sauces and even tea.   6. Sage Sage helps relieve the inflammation that can cause achy muscles and also helps to keep your mind clear. Sage is in the mint family and is exceptionally fine for flavoring food.

  7. Boswellin is a tree that is found in Africa, Asia, India and the Middle East. The gum of the tree is used to treat arthritis due to its superior anti-inflammatory properties. This is known to relieve joint pain and has no side effects. This herb is available in tablet or capsule form and is taken three times a day to relieve the symptoms associated with arthritis.   8. Guggul (Commiphora wightii). The resin from the guggul tree has anti-inflammatory properties. These can be found in tablet form at most health stores. Warning: this herb can cause the blood to thin so it is not suitable for all arthritis sufferers.

Even a small amount of pain relief can make a major difference in your quality of life. The effect of herbs may be small but every little bit helps when it comes to pain relief. Herbs are delicious way to liven up your meals, but they’re also one of nature’s most potent weapons to stop and prevent pain.
