Natural health supplements sometimes have unexpected side effects or interactions with medication that can lead to adverse reactions that are sometimes life threatening. The following is a list of cautions that you should be aware of before using Karaya Gum. These are referred to as drug/herb interactions. Karaya Gum is a vegetable product produced as an exudate by trees of the genus Sterculia.

Warning 1 – Contraindications: Do not use any bulk-laxative, including karaya gum, if you have a bowel obstruction.

Warning 2 – Prescription medication: Karaya Gum decreases the absorption and effectiveness of all oral medicatins. Consult with your doctor before using karaya if you are taking prescription drugs.

Used as a natural health remedy: Karaya Gum is used internally for the following benefits and conditions:

  • Sphrodisiac to increase sexual desire (unproven)
  • Constipation relief (proven)

Side Effects of Karaya Gum

There are no known side effects of using Karaya Gum. Although karaya gum seems safe for most people, it can block the intestines if you do not drink enough fluid.

As with any herb, a serious allergic reaction is possible. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction. These may include a rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
