Subj: ED caused by Lexapro

I have erectile dysfunction from taking Lexapro. Lexapro has improved my life dramatically but ruined my libido. Do products like VigRx or Extagen help. What about using only Epimedium to improve things (and at what dose?)

Buster

AskDocWeb: Judging by the feedback, Both Extagen and VigRx have been used used successfully by at least a few for erectile dysfunction however, Extagen is no longer on the market.

Subj: Can Lexapro cause galactorrhea?
Date: 7/24/2007
I was wondering if you know of Lexapro causing ongoing Galactorrhea? My doctor tested my prolactin levels and I had a mammogram and ultrasound, all normal. But the galactorrhea continues. I take Lexapro 10mg once daily. Thank you.

L.

AskDocWeb: Galactorrhea is not listed as a side effect of Lexapro. Doing a little research turned up several women asking if there was a connection because they were taking the drug and started leaking milk. It may or may not turn out to be an unlisted side effect. Since galactorrhea falls into the endocrine category, you might want to get checked out by a hormone doctor, an endocrinologist.

For those wondering, galactorrhea (“gal-act-tor-ee-ah”) is a dysfunction where one or both breasts leak milk. Men can also have galactorrhea, but it is less common. In both sexes, the most common cause of galactorrhea is a prolactin-secreting tumor (prolactinoma) in the pituitary gland but galactorrhea has many other causes. Any condition that upsets the balance or production of hormones by the pituitary gland or sexual organs can stimulate the production of prolactin. Here are some of the other known causes:

  • Medicines
  • hormones
  • tranquilizers
  • antidepressants
  • Drugs that block the effects of dopamine
  • Drugs that deplete dopamine in the brain
  • blood pressure medicines

Drugs

  • alpha methyldopa
  • Butyrophenones
  • Cimetidine (Tagamet)
  • Codeine
  • Dopamine-depleting agents
  • Dopamine-receptor blockade
  • haloperidol (Haldol)
  • Heroin
  • Histamine-receptor blockade
  • Inhibition of dopamine release
  • Methyldopa (Aldomet)
  • Metoclopramide (Reglan)
  • Morphine
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Phenothiazines
  • reserpine
  • Reserpine (Serpasil)
  • Risperidone (Risperdal)
  • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors
  • Stimulation of lactotrophs
  • Sulpiride (outsie the USA)
  • Thioxanthenes
  • Tricyclic antidepressants
  • trifluoperazine (Stelazine)
  • Verapamil (Calan)
  • Street drugs like marijuana and opiates
  • Hormone imbalance
  • Tumors (usually benign)
  • Head injuries
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Pregnancy
  • Clothing that irritates the breasts

Herbs

  • scratchy wool shirts
  • bras that don’t fit well
  • Doing very frequent breast self-exams, like daily
  • Stimulation of the breast during sexual activity

Is lexapro a benzodiazapine?

Andrea

AskDocWeb: No.

Subj: Lexapro with Meridia?
Date: 4/3/2008
I have taken Meridia in the past and it has worked wonderfully. I have since started on lexapro and have started to gain weight, Can these two drugs be taken together?

KerriLynn

AskDocWeb: No, taking Lexapro (Escitalopram Oxalate) and Meridia (Sibutramine Hydrochloride) together may result in an increased risk of a serious syndrome that may cause high blood pressure, facial flushing, elevated body temperature, sudden muscle spasms, seizures, confusion, or changes in mental awareness. If you are using these medications together, your doctor may change the dose or how often you use one or both of these medications. Tell your doctor if you have muscle tremor, sudden muscle spasms, facial flushing, or feel confused. Do not stop using medication without talking to your doctor first.

Subj: Gaussian Noise Level dosage
Date: 1/3/2010
If 20mg Lexapro works for you, try a 40mg generic like Citalopram (Celexa). Designer drugs @ $5 a pill and generics @ 5¢ a pill share efficacy, but not price. I took Lexapro for a year and a half, switched to the above mentioned 5¢ generic, and have subsequently reduced my dosage by 3/4 – to 10mg (a Gaussian Noise Level dosage).

Chas

AskDocWeb: Sorry Chas, we were unable to find any reference for a Gaussian Noise Level dosage. The Gaussian Noise Level is a measure of the signal to noise ratio of sound. It has nothing to do with medication.

Sense of taste
Date: 7/18/2014
Have been on Lexapro for about 6 weeks now and it’s working great. The only thing I’ve noticed is that my sense of taste has really decreased. Everything tastes kind-of bland. I’m still eating (unfortunately) but nothing tastes good to me anymore. Is this a side-effect of Lexapro?

Karen

AskDocWeb: A change in your sense of taste is one of the possible side effects of Lexapro. See this list.

Leaking boobs?
Date: 9/26/2015
I am on ESCITALOPRAM, does this cause woman to have boob leaking?

crystal

AskDocWeb: It may for some patients, although how often this occurs has yet to be established. It’s called Galactorrhea, which is excessive or inappropriate production of milk.

Breast discharge?
Date: 12/30/2016
I’m taking lexapro, for 2 weeks now. had a baby 10 months ago, never breast feed, and the other night I leaked through my shirt. Is it the medicine?

Priscilla

AskDocWeb: Although less than one percent of those taking Lexapro have reported breast discharge, it is possible but uncommon.
