Subj: Pains in my leg muscles
Date: 3/16/2009
I had been taking lipitor for 8+ years. About 2 years after beginning lipitor use, I started having pains in my leg muscles. I received numerous x-rays etc and the result was always that there was not a problem. About 4-5 years after taking lipitor, I started having short-term memory problems. Also, the leg pains increased. The past years the muscle pain increased to the point that I could not put my full weight on my legs. Also, I had trouble sleeping because I could not rest my leg without pain. Also, my memory problems became so bad that I found it necessary to stop teaching at the local college. Finally, I experienced pain and memory problems every day until I decided to stop taking lipitor, even if it shortens my life. I will never take lipitor again and I will tell everyone that I know what lipitor has done to me.

Subj: Quit taking Lipitor and muscle pain is reducing
Date: 3/28/2009
I took lipitor for 8+ years and since that time, I have experienced headaches that do not fit migrane description. The headaches would occur about every 7-10 days and would last 10-12 hours. I tried many pain medicines with no relief. I have had numerous medical tests: MRI’s, x-rays, etc and the result was always the same – no answer to the cause of the headaches. Finally, the past 3-4 years I experienced severe muscle pain in my legs and shoulder. At times I could not walk. The result was that I had to quit my teaching job and still the pains continued. A 5 weeks ago, I quit taking lipitor and since then I have not had any 10-12 hr headaches and the muscle pain has been reducing. I am 75 and I think I am too young to lead a sedentary life. How much mobility can I expect to regain?
John
AskDocWeb: There is no way to know much mobility you will regain but even at 75 you can still hope for the best. The fact that your headaches and muscle pain are reducing is encouraging.
Subj: Bad muscle pain
Date: 3/30/2009
I have been taking Lipitor 10M for over a year. I am suffering very bad muscle pain, weakness in legs, twitching and leg spasams. This effects my sleep every night. If I get down on the floor I have a lot of difficulty getting up. I have to hold on to something to pull myself up. I am a 60 year old women. I walk a 1/2 mile or a mile at the most, every other day. I can’t do the walking every day, because my strength in my legs are weak. I have gained weight and my stomach is puffy all the time. I am ready to stop taking the Lipitor, to see if this medication is causing the problems.

Subj: Cholesterol
Date: 3/30/2009
Hello AskDocWeb: My cholestrol is 230-260 and my doctor put me on 40mg of lipitor…isn’t this pretty high? I haven’t felt well since I’ve been taking it. I feel like I have rocks in my stomach, get light-headed and just don’t feel good. I stopped taking it! Please give me you advice. Should I try crestor? Thanks & regards,
Elsie

Subj: Joint pain
Date: 4/21/2009
I am 50years old and have been taking Lipitor for ten years or more. Some years ago I started to get joint pain, which has progressively got worse over the last few years to a point now that I am in tears most of the time because of the pain and constantly taking pain killers. After doing lots of different tests my doctor could not find anything wrong with me. These days I find it hard to get out of bed in the morning or even walk without pain, my feet hurt constantly, and even typing this I am in pain. Could this be caused by Lipitor? And if so how do I find out?
Barbara
AskDocWeb: This sounds familiar, you might want to read through the comments posted by other Lipitor users here. Statins in general deplete the body of an enzyme necessary for muscle cell function.
Subj: Serious muscle cramp
Date: 4/25/2009
I have been taking lipitor but have serious muscle cramp, if I stop it, will my arteries get blocked.
Larson
AskDocWeb: Your arteries are already in danger of being blocked or you wouldn’t be taking Lipitor. Please talk to your doctor about the muscle cramps.
Subj: Do’s and don’ts
Date: 4/28/2009
My Dr put me on lipator and my cholesterol came down by my three month check up so the dr. told me to cut my pills in half. I stated to notice that I am tired more and that at night I have terrible pain in my knees. I read an add for Lipator and the do’s and don’ts and one of the don’t is Do Not Cut pills in half. My Dr. should have known this and I am really upset and worried about my next blood test and what it will show. After reading some of these comments, I am going to stop taking them. I am going to the health food store and getting thier advice on what to take.

Subj: Hurt so bad I want to die
Date: 4/28/2009
Started taking lipitor a couple moths ago. Muscle pain in legs started a couple weeks later. My last appointment with my Doctor I told him about this and thought lipitor was the problem. Pain has increased. Can’t walk, sit or stand. Pain is constant throbbing. Can’t sleep. Pain meds or lioderm pain patch has no effect. Nothing works. I hurt so bad I want to die. I can’t live this way. Stopped taking lipitor last night and finally got some sleep. Woke up this morning and still have pain but it’s not constant. It only hurts when I walk or stand. I can sit and lie down now. Today I am not in so much pain I want to die. Now I need to know how long or what I can do to recover?
Gayla
AskDocWeb: To our knowledge the drug company has yet to address this issue. If you wake up someday and notice that the pain has gone, come back to this page and tell others how long that took.
Subj: Loss of appetite and change in taste

Was taking Atorvastatin for a couple of weeks but noticed loss of appetite and change in taste. Everything I try and eat taste sweet and I can only tolerate 2 tins of soup each day. My doctors don’t know what to do. Please can you help. I stopped taking the tablets on 31.3.09 and I still can’t eat. I am so hungry. I am going to see an Oral specialist in 2 weeks but I am desperate to eat now. I really am desperate but nobody can help me. I am scared in case I am like this permanently.

Subj: Long term neck pain, and online RX?
Date: 5/6/2009
Hey, I have been having really bad neck pain for a long time, along with muscle tightness. I stopped taking lipitor for this reason. I’m still hurting. I have read that soma works well. To get a office visit with my MD cost about $100.00, I see where I can buy soma online for the same price. Are these US based online RX the real deal? Please advise.
Hurting
AskDocWeb: We looked at a couple of dozen online pharmacies but didn’t find any that we would trust. Some day you may be able to safely buy online but it doesn’t look good right now.
Subj: My legs are almost paralyzed
Date: 5/12/2009
For 2 years I am taking 10mg Lipitor a day, result my legs are almost paralysed, I am unable to walk more than 500 meters a day, previously I was walking more than 10km a day without problem, I have breathing problems and leg raches. I asked several time my doctor about possible side effects of Lipitor the answer was clear LIPITOR HAS NO SIDE EFFECTS. I think that several doctors must return to school or be radiated Lipitor is dangerous and sales must be discontinued.

Subj: Xenical and Lipitor together?
Date: 5/19/2009
Are there problems with taking Xenical and Lipitor at the same time?
Kevin
AskDocWeb: We didn’t find any problems with using Xenical with Lipitor but you should check with your doctor to find out if it is safe for you. If Lipitor is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either one may be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Lipitor with drugs that suppress the immune system, Erythromycin, Fenofibrate, Fluconazole, Gemfibrozil, Itraconazole, Ketoconazole, Niacin, Antacids, Clofibrate, Colestipol, Cyclosporine, Digoxin, or Oral contraceptives.
Subj: Sore eyes, blurred vision, gritty eyes, light sensitivity
Date: 5/22/2009
I have been taking Lipitor for three months. About eight weeks ago I started getting sore eyes, blurred vision, gritty eyes, light sensisity. (I have never had anything wrong with my eyes before). I went off Lipitor and they improved but I took one last night. They are blurry this morning. I am also on Thyroid Medicaton. Three days ago a blood vessel busted in my kidney. My TSH level has radically dropped, with a high FT4. My thyroid was behaving well for seven years until I started taking Lipitor. I have been to a lot of sites this morning and no, I’m not touching the stuff again. The makers, Phizer should be shot for putting such a lethal drug on the market. I pray all my symptoms will disappear and yours as well.

Subj: Insomnia and muscle weakness with pain
Date: 5/31/2009
Started taking Lipitor 20mg 3 yrs. ago for very high cholesterol, it has since been increased to 40mg then 80mg. Insomnia started after dosage increased to 40mg, only able to sleep 4hrs at a time, extremely fatigued while awake, unable to accomplish simple chores due to weakness. Started having chest pain, never had it before. Muscles in back and legs very painful whenever challenged, use to love walking at a fast pace, now unable to walk a block without a rest. Hands are sore all the time, unable to open jars or grip anything. Have had problems with knee, ankle and hip joints i.e.: swelling and pain after mild exercise. Use to have an excellent memory, now short term memory and word recall is terrible. My Dr. decided to add ezetrol, then started to have anxiety attacks and became depressed. My Dr. denies all possibility that my symptoms could be related to lipitor, but I know better now and have taken myself off both lipitor and ezetrol 2 months ago with much improvement, but still have a long way to go. Will the insomnia and muscle weakness/pain ever go away?

AskDocWeb: Some people have reported easing of their symptoms within days but unfortunately, others have reported that the effect on muscles remain long after the drug is out of the system.
Subj: Lipitor tingling in feet, hands, legs, arms and face
Date: 6/3/2009
I have been taking Lipitor for over a year and never had a reaction. About a month ago, I started having tingling in my feet, hands, legs, arms and face. I went to a neurologist and he took all sorts of blood work, MRI of the brain and nerve tests and everything came back negative. He suggested I get off Lipitor. Could the tingling be a reaction to Lipitor?
Natalie
AskDocWeb: According to a study published in the May 14, 2002 issue of Neurology, the scientific journal of the American Academy of Neurology, Lipitor and other statin drugs can increase the risk of developing peripheral neuropathy (tingling and numbness or burning pain). This can be especially troubling for diabetics because of their reduced muscle sensitivity.
Subj: Severe muscle pain
Date: 6/9/2009
I have been on litor 40 mg for about a month and have severe muscle pain and barely can walk after sitting awhile. I’m 54 yrs old and feeling tired and after reading your web page am getting off lipitor right away. Also neck pain thought I was exercising too much but again, after viewing all the problems with lipitor I am convinced this is all my severe muscle pain. Also have experienced memory problems. Thank you for your web page.
