Subj: Report that just came out
Date: 2/14/2008
I am trying to fine the report that just came out about memorie lose in women from taking liptor. Can you please tell me where I can go to fine this report? Thank you,

Carol

AskDocWeb: It sounds like you may be talking about the article in the Wall Street Journal titled, “Can a Drug That Helps Hearts Be Harmful to the Brain?” dated February 12, 2008. ( http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120277403869360595.html ) In that article a Dr Orli Etingin, vice chairman of medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital, described the effect of Lipitor on a woman in her 40s who was unable to concentrate or remember words. The tests they ran showed nothing wrong but when she stopped taking Lipitor, her symptoms disappeared. When she started taking Lipitor again, the concentration and memory problems came back.

Subj: Pains in my legs
Date: 2/19/2008
I have just suddenly started having pains in my legs and read this is a symptom/side effect of Lipitor. I have been on 10mg for a while…about 3 or more years. Should this be investigated? It is aching and pain…all of a sudden. Your comments w/be appreciated.

Lisa

AskDocWeb: As with all cholesterol lowering drugs, if you experience any muscle weakness or muscle pain you are to report it to your doctor as soon as possible.

Subj: Muscle cramping and leg pain
Date: 2/20/2008
I have become so debilitated in both lower calves and arms elbow down from 1.5yrs on 40mg lipitor I think this product is not what its cracked up to be how about quality of life, but of course the dr. Will state my labs are fine. I’m full of it but he’s not in my skin. I lived in this body and I know when these things started. I quit lipitor 4mos ago and still have muscle cramping and leg pain.

Subj: Leg pain, cramps and muscle aches
Date: 3/9/2008
I’ve been on Lipitor for 8 years and have gradually noticed leg pain, cramps and muscle aches and in the past two years they have become serious enough that my liestyle has changed. Some days I can hardly walk. I have told my heart doctor this and we tried lovistatin, which did not help the numbers. I went back on lipitor and have been much worse. I took myself off it 4 days ago. I am hoping and praying that any damage done to my legs and muscles will repair. I feel like I have aged 10 years in the past year and a half. I am 67 years of age and extremely active despite all of this but have to rest and get off my legs. they ache terribly while I am at rest. What other natural remedies can I take. I even had to stop exercising because I did not have the strength in my leg.

Saundra

AskDocWeb: The pains will likely subside, but it may take awhile. As for natural remedies, there have been good reports about Vasacor.

Subj: Mayo clinic diet
Date: 4/25/2008
Yes, I am looking for the Mayo clinic diet that you eat 2eggs and 2 pieces of beacon in the morning along with a 1/2 grapefruit. I forget the rest! HELP!!!

Vikki

AskDocWeb: Here is our opinion of the Mayo clinic diet. If you are taking Lipitor, remember to consult your doctor before increasing or decreasing the amount of grapefruit you eat.

Subj: Pain in upper leg
Date: 4/30/2008
I was put on 10 mg. of lipitor a day about 2 years ago. I reacted quite strongly to it (as measured by very low cholesterol levels) and Dr. lowered amount to 5mg. per day. In Jan of this year I began having intermittent pain in upper leg, like a toothache,, which then became almost constant. Dr. had be go off lipitor. Pain lessened over time, but still have it occasionally. Could pain still be from lipitor? Dr. now wants me to go on Niascan, and I am reluctant to do anything with still having pain in leg. Cholesterol is 201. Your responses to questions are very informative and seem to provide good advice.

Lucille

AskDocWeb: Since you are reluctant to go with drugs, we encourage you to learn more about the affect of diet and exercise on Cholesterol levels. Increasing your activity level is beneficial on many levels, and you can’t avoid meals like the “heart attack specials” unless you know what they are. Find out, it’s well worth your time to learn to take good care of your body.

Subj: Cholesterol dropped from 200 to 161
Date: 5/19/2008
I am a 58 year old woman and am on 40 mg of Lipitor. My colesterol has dropped from 200 to 161 in 1 month on Lipitor. My cardiologist wants to put me on 80mg so that the HDL/LDL ratio is even better and the cholesterol level is further reduced. The thinking is that by increasing the Lipitor it will decrease any build-up of cholesterol in the body. I am hesitant to do this based on the side effects that it can have. Presently I do not have any side effects.

Subj: Does Lipitor work?
Date: 5/20/2008
Is it true that Lipitor does not work against cholestral?

Ellece

AskDocWeb: No, that is false, Lipitor does reduce the amounts of LDL (bad) cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglycerides (another type of fat), and apolipoprotein B (a protein needed to make cholesterol) in your blood.

Subj: CoQ10 levels
Date: 6/8/2008
Is there a blood test to check your CoQ10 levels?

Elizabeth

AskDocWeb: Yes, a simple blood test can reveal your CoQ10 level. Normal values for CoQ10 are 0.8 to 1.5 nanograms per milliliter. Most labs will give both a normal range (for population as a whole), as well as therapeutic ranges (the CoQ10 levels thought to help treat disease). The recommended therapeutic level of CoQ10 is between 2.5 to 3.5 ng/ml.

Subj: Stopped lipitor per doctor’s orders
Date: 6/17/2008
Take Lipitor off the market. It is poison to your system. I hope to God I am able to go back to work. I stopped lipitor through my doctor’s orders 7 days ago. Each day got better, very slowly. I am still apprehensive about driving a car and standing at work as a bank teller. LIPITOR YOU ARE DESTROYING PEOPLE’S LIVES – GET OFF THE MARKET – INFORM THE DOCTORS WHAT REALLY CAN HAPPEN. I had such pressure in my head, I was mistreated with antibiotic and dizzyness medication because they said I had vertigo from an inter ear infection and sinitus. Three weeks later I could not stand or walk because I had no muscle feeling in my legs. GO AWAY LIPITOR YOU ARE BRUTAL.

Subj: Weakness in both shoulders and elbows
Date: 7/9/2008
I started on Lipitor 4 years ago, When you have a busy life style you tend to ignore yours bodies deterioration process, After reading the comments on this web page I realize I too have many of the side affects associated with lipitor. I have weakness in both shoulders and elbows, unscrewing a can top can be a challenge at times, I have periodic stomache pains and headaches, I am tired during the day and now often experience lack of concentration during office meetings, I also have numbness in my right foot(Toes) sometimes I have difficulty remembering the names of my close friends for example “I must contact Brian and ???” It takes me a couple of minutes after going through the alphabet to remember. My cousin from the UK has been taken off the Drug due to severe side affects, Today she imforms me there is a possibility the drug may be banned in the UK including Europe, Is this true? I have stopped taking the drug untill I see my doctor in 3 weeks, Is it safe to do so? Thank you,

Stuart

AskDocWeb: No, do not stop taking Lipitor without first talking to your doctor. We’ll have to wait and see what happens in Europe.

Subj: Sore legs and cramps
Date: 7/9/2008
I have been on Lipitor 40 mg for few years with no problems. However, for the past 3 months I have had severe muscle problems in both arms and back of thighs – upper legs. I also am waking up at night with sore legs and occasional charley horse on bottom of left foot. Could these be related to Lipitor side effects? If I stop taking Lipitor how long will it remain in my body? Thanks,

Jim

AskDocWeb: Others taking Lipitor have reported similar symptoms. Most of the Lipitor will be out of your system in just a couple of days but the effects may linger for awhile after that and there is no way to know how long they will persist.

Subj: After stopping lipitor pains in calves decreased
Date: 7/24/2008
I had been on Lipitor for about 3 years and was experiencing severe muscle pain in my calves when walking and climbing stairs…also experienced shortness of breath. I saw a vascular doctor who thought it must be PAD and did a cahterization and put in stents to allow for increased blood flow to the calf area. No improvement whatsoever after the procedure was done. Two weeks later, the doctor called and told me to discontinue the lipitor. After having an invasive procedure! Guess what 2 months after stopping the lipitor, the pains in my calves had decreased substantially. I have been off of lipitor now for almost 3 years and I still experience some calf pain, but nowhere near the excruciating pain that I once did. It just amazes me that we have become the guinea pigs for pharmaceutical companies because there are too many unknowns concerning all of these drugs that Dr.’s prescribe based on the information they received from a drug company sales reps. Sometimes I think we would be smarter buying drugs from drug pushers…at least they have experienced the side effects of some of these medications!

Subj: Feel extremely weak and tired
Date: 8/15/2008
High cholesterol runs in my family and I found out I had it at age 13. I am an track athlete and train 5 days a week so I have an athletic body and without medication my cholesterol is over 400 and eat healthy. I was put on lipitor for 2 years and it made me very unwell especially why exercising. I would feel extremely weak and have to lay down or I will pass out. Before lipitor I was fine, even before I found out my cholesterol was high I was doing well. Now I can no longer do track because even after I stop taking the medication I still feel extremely weak and tired weather am exercising or getting excited about a anything. My doctor is just concerned about lowering my cholesterol rather than looking at the side effects.

Subj: Lower back pain
Date: 8/17/2008
I started lipitor (10 mg.) 2 years ago. I had gotten so comfortable takng it, when my lower back started to hurt so bad that I could hardly get out of the chair, couldn’t lay in bed for the excruciating pain, I got online and starting looking. After reading all the testimonies, I realized it could be the lipitor. I stopped it, but 4 weeks later I still have the issue, although not quite as bad. It is slowly subsiding. I think it may be a long haul to recovery if in fact it ever gets better. I’m 55 but feel like I’m 80. Is there anything I can take to releive the dull pain in my lower back that is always there? I have seen a chiropractor who feels Lipitor should be removed from the market. Could I have kidney damage. I see my doctor in a month. Any ideas?

Roseann

AskDocWeb: Of course there are drugs you can take to relieve pain and your doctor will help you with that. Alternatively, in some cases physical therapy can do wonders for lower back pain. For us the most useful exercise was the tensing, holding, and release of the muscles involved with the pain. The length of time the muscles were held tight was gradually increased over time. As the strength of these muscles increased, the pain decreased. Read more feedback about Lipitor.
