Subj: Stay away from this stuff
Date: 8/26/2008
I took lipitor for 6 weeks started having all the muscle pains and 20 pounds of water gain. I no longer take this drug and would recommend others to eat healthy and do what you must to stay away from this stuff.

Subj: Severe eye pain
Date: 9/25/2008
I have been experiencing severe eye pain and take lipitor….I went to the eye specialist and he can see no reason for the pain…I also take plaquinal as I have rheumotoid athritis. I have been reading about lipitor and side effects and other friends have recently stopped taking lipitor…this drug maybe the cause of this eye pain I have…one eye is now constantly sore and feels bruised all the time…so as of today I am taking the drug no longer.

Subj: Drug interactions?
Date: 9/28/2008
I do take lipitor 80 mg and Zieta 10 mg. What kind of side affects will this have on me in regards to these two other drugs I take?

Harry

AskDocWeb: Assuming your “Zieta” is a misspelling of Zetia, there are no interactions listed between those three drugs, only the caution about the use of grapefruit juice with Lipitor. Using Lipitor and drinking grapefruit juice is not recommended.

Subj: It has cost me a lot of money
Date: 10/4/2008
After losing my husband of 46 years I was put on atacand, for hbp lipitor for high cholesterol caused by high stress levels due to situation. One month later I was in a&e chest pains, put down to pulled muscles, now two months later I have muscle pain tingling in my hands and feet, vision problems, lethargy, and have now been told it’s the lipitor. As you don’t like bothering doctors me personally put it down to everything but a prescribed drug without any information how severe the side are in such a short time and no guarantee you will get back to normal. I’m 63 and have never felt so ill. I’m normally healthy and it has cost me a lot of money for cardiologist, tests the medication to have no heart problems, but this epidemic of high cholesterol. Something needs to be done. Thank you for letting me sound off.

Subj: Muscle spasms
Date: 10/14/2008
I was taken Lipitor about 6 months ago. I started to get very bad shoulder pain. All the doctors I gone to see, no one has said stop taking the medication. So I stopped it on my own and felt alot better until 2 months ago I started to get muscle spasms or muscle jitters. Now I’m scared would that be from the lipitor or a new problem. Thanks,

Malina

AskDocWeb: If you’ve read through the reviews, you have some idea of what may happen but that doesn’t mean it is happening to you. There is no way to know what is causing your muscle spasms until you get checked out.

Subj: Severe pain and stiffness
Date: 10/23/2008
I have been on lipitor for approx. 5 yrs., no problems. I feel as healthy and strong as ever, work out at least 3 times a week, lifting weights, beleive I am strong for my age, 59. 2 weeks ago, I felt aching in all my bones, starting taking Advil and the aches went away, my Dr said it was a veris. Even hit the gym one day, then the muscle pain came, it has been unreal in my entire torso, neck and stiffness in the back. My dr. has pulled me from lipitor. My question, how long before I start seeing some relief from this severe pain and stiffness?

Jack

AskDocWeb: Of course it varies from one individual to the next and depends on the exact cause of the pain but some people report getting relief the day following discontinuing Lipitor and complete relief of side effects within two days. It appears that the best you can hope for is a few days.

Subj: Stomach pains, gas, and leg cramps
Date: 11/5/2008
I have been taking Lipitor since 10/2007. After 5 weeks on the drug, I started having awful stomach pains, excess gas, and awful leg cramps. The stomach problems came back about once a month until I had been on the drug for 1 year. I began having nausea most days, with the pains every few days. I can’t eat when I have these pains. I am bloated, have horrible gas and vomit occasionally. The leg cramps and pain continue and now muscle weakness has become a problem. My doctor didn’t want to listen. I stopped the med 2 days ago on my own. I can’t take it anymore.

Susan

AskDocWeb: If your doctor won’t listen then maybe it’s time to consult with another doctor for a second opinion.

Subj: Paying the price
Date: 11/9/2008
I’ve been on Lipitor about 3 months, my cholesterol was 261, I have to admit that it has taken it down to 155. My blood test are fine with no effects, however my muscles are paying the price. It started in my right shoulder and worked down to my calves and toes. My knees ached and my calves were stiff and swollen. I figured it was from the medication so I went off of it last week. My muscle stiffness is gone and the knees are not so tender. My Dr. wants me to go on Crestor, I’m not so sure I want to do that.

Subj: Leg pain in bones
Date: 11/19/2008
I have been taking Lipitor for a little over a year. Started having pain in my legs that felt like the pain was in my bones. Waited until last week to finally see an orthopedist who said it was the Lipitor causing the pain. My family doctor has taken me off of Lipitor to see how I will feel. My question is, how long does it take for Lipitor to be out of your system? Thank you,

Kim
AskDocWeb: Most of the Lipitor will be out of your system in just a couple of days but the effects may linger after that and there is no way to know how long that leg pain will persist.

Subj: Never again
Date: 11/24/2008
I had been on Lipitor for 3 years. What hell I have been through. Diarreah, irritable bowel, upper respiratory tract infections, no voice, asthma, 2 mini strokes, kidney stones, blood clot, upper respiratory again, no voice, breathing problems always, vomiting diarreah virus they think, colopased as no muscle control left in my body, chronic fatigue, memory loss, eyes dry, brain fog, thinks fibromyalga now as well, always ill. Sick of being sick, then my sister saw the side effects of this horrible drug I stopped it immenfdiately and want to try to get it off the market. I cannot raise my arms anymore, legs always aching and spasms of twitching with muslces I have no control over. I will never take it again.

Subj: Severe pain in muscles
Date: 12/10/2008
I stopped taking Lipitor 2 months ago and still suffer from “severe” pain in the muscles in my right arm…have tingles in my hands and wrists, sometimes numbness. What I want to know is: do the muscles ever repair themselves or will I have the pain forever and what type of doctor should I be seeing that deals with muscle problems? Thank you,

Colleen

AskDocWeb: Not enough if known about this side effect to predict how long it will last. The closest you might come to a doctor that specializes in muscle problems is one who deals with sports injuries.

Subj: It is a trick
Date: 12/23/2008
I have been taking lipitor for 5 weeks. My cholestrol was 215. I was told this was high and I should take this lipitor to lower my cholestrol. After three weeks, I started having chest pains. I went to the emergency room and took an EKG and an X-ray, but they did not find anything. I was given a motrin and sent home. However, I was told that it might be the medicine. I called a cardiologist and he took an EKG and saw nothing. I went home and started experiencing pains in the muscles in my arm, squeezing in my head, needle pricks in my head and chills. I went to my doctor several times during these ordeals. He ignored these symptoms. On December 18, I decided that I would not take the medicine one more day. The side effects were horrible. I actually thought that I was dying. I have been off lipitor for four days. Lipitor is a drug that no one should take. I am just grateful that I only stayed on the medicine for five weeks. I am telling all my friends that if lipitor is offered to them to run as fast as they can. It is a trick. I am now on a very good diet that the cardiologist suggested, lost a lot of weight and exercise everyday. I am now in charge of my health, not the doctor.

Subj: Muscles ache
Date: 12/24/2008
I have been on 40 mg of Lipitor for about 5 years. My muscles ache so badly that I can hardly get up and when I do I can hardly walk I am so sore. When I go to bed my arms and legs ache like a toothache. I went of lipitor for one month with no change. How long does it take to get them out of your system and what can be taken in their place. Thanks.

Jo

AskDocWeb: Most of the Lipitor will be out of your system in just a couple of days but the effects may linger after that. Unfortunately, the effect on muscles may last long after the drug is out of your system. Readers who have gone through this and recovered are encouraged to share with those who are still suffering.

Subj: DVT (deep-vein thrombosis)
Date: 1/6/2009
I am 73 yrs old, have been on Lipitor approx. 10 years. I recently developed DVT (deep-vein thrombosis) in my left leg, unable to determine what caused it. Taking coumadin currectly. This week I developed another pain in that same leg. Could this be related to taking 20M Lipitor?

Bernice

AskDocWeb: There have been reported of muscle pain and weakness in legs but DVT has not been linked to Lipitor.

Subj: Loss of muscle and weakness
Date: 1/8/2009
Have now been on Lipitor for about 2+ months with big reduction in LDH and overall cholesterol. At the same time I started this med, I started a low carb, low sugar diet for early Type 2 diabetes and stopped exercising because my husband needed care after surgery. I’ve lost almost 10 lbs, but unfortunately the loss is mostly muscle (indicated by my BMI) and my CPK is slightly elevated. I have never had muscle aching or pain. My dose has been reduced to 5 mg, but do you think I should discuss with my doc stopping it entirely or is weakness without pain not a side effect?

geni

AskDocWeb: Even if the weakness is not accompanied with pain it is still listed as a possible side effect. Please discuss the loss of muscle and weakness with your doctor.

Subj: Gas
Date: 1/15/2009
I had been taking Lipitor 10 mg for about a year then they upped me to crestor which my system could not tolerate at all. Then it was back to Lipitor 20mg and the way it started to affect me was in my stomach and liver area. I would gas up at night and if I was working hard I would start to get a real discomfort in my midsection and have to stop. Since I have quit this drug my problems have disappeared. I now take hemp hearts and I feel much better.

Subj: Drug allergy
Date: 1/19/2009
I had been taking Lipitor for about 5 months when I began to itch. What followed was my worst summer EVER as my doctor continued to dismiss my symptoms, and prescribe stronger and stronger anti-itch meds while telling me how difficult it was to get into a dermatologist. I was taking cold baths, buying lotions like Sarna, anything to get some relief, and was covered in black and blue bruises from scratching. I finally got into a dermatologist, who took a skin biopsy and said “It looks like a drug allergy.” Since the only other med change I had had was a change from Synthroid to a generic, he had me stop the Lipitor and go back to brand-name Synthroid. I don’t know which one was the problem, but I am glad to be off the Lipitor, even though my cholesterol is 235. Problem solved, although it took another 1.5 months for my system to clear and the itching to subside.
