Subj: Desperate to lose weight
Date: 3/8/2007
My friend is currently taking meridia with great success. Naturally, I would like to take it also but I do take blood pressure medicine combined with diuretics. I also take medication to regulate my triglyceride level. Because of this, I probably am not a good candidate to take meridia. I am so desperate to lose weight I’ll try just about anything. Is there any other appetite suppressant that is relatively safe and I won’t have to worry about contraindication with the meds that I am now taking. Please help,
Jiya
AskDocWeb: Sorry that you are not a candidate for meridia. There isn’t a good appetite suppressant that you can take when you have hypertension. Your best bet may be to focus on life-style changes and exercise. Try a 20 or 30 minute walk three times a week and cut out carbonated beverages.
Subj: Lost 7 pounds
Date: 3/12/2007
I have been on Meridia about 3 weeks and have lost about 7 lbs. On some nights I sleep very soundly and quickly. On others hard time getting to sleep. My main question is, I have lower back pain which could be either a bladder infection or other. I have noticed I do urinate more on Meridia and maybe I am not drinking enough water and I am getting dehydrated which can cause the infection. I also noticed that if you take Bactrim (a sulfur drug) with Meridia you have to be careful of the interaction?
Brenda
AskDocWeb: It does sound like you are not drinking enough water. This drug could also be affecting your renal function. You might want to have a renal function test done to make sure.
Subj: Neurontin and Meridia
Date: 3/14/2007
I am taking a neurotin to help with Migraines and I am not sure if mixing the drugs are the cause but I have had alot of pressure in my head and mild to strong headaches unlike the normal migraines I am use to getting. The most thing I notice is this head pressure, neck and joint pain and dry mouth. I would like to keep taking it, it’s only been a week but I am a bit worried.
Melissa
AskDocWeb: If Neurontin doesn’t seem to be helping with your migraines then consult with your physician about changing your med and be sure to tell him that you are on Meridia.
Subj: We’ll see
Date: 3/14/2007
Today is my first day and I am kind of scared with all the hype about potential dangers. So far I don’t feel any different. We’ll see what happens tomorrow. My endocrinologists thinks it is suited for me since I do not have thyroid problems. I take 10mg. dosage.

Subj: Meridia and Chantix
Date: 3/16/2007
I will be starting meridia in a few days, I’m 33 years old, 5′ 8″ and weigh 210 lbs. My doctor is starting me at 5mg, from what I’ve read this seems low. I do realize that I don’t really “appear” to be 50 lbs. over weight (I wear a size 12 jeans), so I don’t know if that’s why he’s starting me at 5. I have a couple questions, way back when ephedrine was legal I had great results with it, to avoid my system getting used to it and thus not having the same results, I would cycle it, meaning I’d take it for 4 or 5 days, then take a few off. Occasionally I’d even take a week off. I never noticed a change in the effectiveness this way. Can I/should I do the same with meridia? 2nd question, I started taking Chantix 3 weeks ago, and haven’t had a cigarette for 2 weeks, have there been any documentation stating that Meridia and Chantix should not be taken together? Thanks!
Elaine
AskDocWeb: No drug-drug interactions have been identified with Meridia and Chantix.
Subj: Not liking Meridia
Date: 3/26/2007
I have been on Meridia for about a month now, 15mg dose and for the first few weeks I had an extremely hard time sleeping. Now I am noticing that I have flu like symptoms and in the past week I have thrown up 3 times. Not sure if the vomiting is a result of Meridia or not but not liking it. Also I noticed I have been very crampy for the past week too, like I am on my period and I’m not due for that for another week and a half. I have also been very thirsty and had a horrible taste in my mouth for the past couple of weeks.
Melissa
AskDocWeb: Sounds like your body just doesn’t want Meridia in your system. When you talk with your doctor about changing to an alternative, be sure to tell what symptoms you are having so that a better choice can be made for you.
Subj: Zoloft and Meridia?
Date: 3/30/2007
Started taking Meridia three weeks ago. Dry mouth and insomnia a slight problem. Also taking Zoloft. Could I discontinue Zoloft and increase Meridia? Scared about the “Seratonin Syndrome”.
Amy
AskDocWeb: You should not increase the Meridia until you discuss this with your doctor. Taking an anti-depressant with Meridia is NOT recommended.
Subj: Antidepressant?
Date: 4/21/2007
Has any one heard of using meridia as an antidepressant?
Tam
Subj: Abnormal period
Date: 4/26/2007
I used Meridia about a year ago for 3 months and lost 20 pounds. I felt really great but after stopping, I gained it all back (and then some) within 3 months, and my appetite was out of control. I decided I would try again this year for a few months, and then taper off the dose instead of stopping it cold turkey. This time however, I’m having issues with abnormal period. I didn’t know this was a side effect?
C.L.
AskDocWeb: Yes, it can affect your mensis.
Subj: Lost 48 pounds
Date: 4/26/2007
I started taking Meridia at the beginning of December 2006 and now almost 5 months later I have lost 48 pounds. I feel so much better. I have about 30 more to lose. I’m hoping that my eating and exercise habits have changed and I will not gain back any of my weight, however I am a little nervous about that. I was wondering though, why is Meridia so expensive? Hopefully after all the money, time and effort I have invested I will be able to stay in control of my weight.
Marie
AskDocWeb: It costs millions of dollars to develop, test and bring a drug to the marketplace. The drug companies want to get their investment back and also make a profit.
Subj: TIA
Date: 4/26/2007
Is it possible to get a TIA from Meridia?
Ev
AskDocWeb: People who have had a stroke or symptoms of a stroke should not take Meridia but we have not heard of it causing one.
TIA = transient ischemic attack
Subj: PMS
Date: 4/29/2007
Have you ever heard on Meridian being taken for PMS? I was hoping the increase in serotonin would help the mood swings and also help with the intense food cravings 2 weeks before my period. I can not take Prozac or similar drugs due to withdrawal side effects? Do you think it would be effective to take Meridia only during that 2 week period and not suffer withdrawal.
Shelly
AskDocWeb: That doesn’t sound very healthy for your body, I don’t suggest it.
Subj: Lost 37 pounds but
Date: 5/2/2007
Hello, back to the very top to the lady who asked about allergy reaction. For the past three days I have been sick and the first day I had bumps all over my face…that went away and yesterday and today my face is extrememly red, swollen and HOT. I am guessing this is the allergic reaction. I have been on the drug for 2 months now, and never had any side effects except for the most common one which is dry mouth and loss of appetite. I don’t know if I should go to emergency with my face…it feels horrible…should I stop taking these drugs or let this pass and continue. I have lost 37 pounds in 2 months now 🙂 very happy and I look good…I am standing at 153 pounds now…want to go down to 135
Marta
AskDocWeb: It sounds pretty serious, please consult your physician. And find some oral Benadryl too.
Subj: Meridia headaches
Date: 5/2/2007
I’ve been using meridia for nearly two months. It took over a month for my appetite to get under control. But for the past three weeks I’ve been having awful, and unusual headaches. They are not migraines, but at times are as bad as a migraine. They seem to move around, are often localized, and sometimes feel like a knife being shoved into my skull and brain. I don’t know if this is a side effect of Meridia or if it’s something else. Are these headaches typical of headaches that often come as a side effect of Meridia?
Pat
AskDocWeb: Yes it sounds like you are having a side effect, you’ll have to consult with your doctor about maybe changing to another type of weight loss tablet.
Subj: Ordered on line
Date: 5/3/2007
Lost 20lbs on reductil 2 years ago without any serious side effects. Recently started taking 15mg and had serious breathing problems with excessive yawning, trying to get a proper breath. Have stopped them for now, do I need to stop them altogether? Ordered them on line, could there be a link?
Cathy
AskDocWeb: Since you ordered them on line there is no way for us to know what you actually took. Please consult with your doctor.
Subj: Meridia for diabetic?
Date: 5/9/2007
I have been on Meridia, physician prescribed, for 8 days and have lost 7 pounds. It curves my appetite extremely well. I am a diabetic, and since starting the meridia I have been having abnormally high blood sugar readings. Anyone else experience this?
Terri
