Subj: Blistering rash
Date: 7/8/2007
I took Meridia 15 mg for 4 days. On the 4th day I began cytomel as instructed 25mcg(1/2 tab) and have taken cytomel before. I had been out in the sun 3 days earlier and have a tan from being out in the sun. I was working cleaning in an air conditioned house with the fan on also. When I finished to take a shower I noticed a blistering rash(water filled blisters) on both shoulders with a few extending to my back. I took a cool shower and scrubbed my arms. The area peeled and looked as though I had a peeling sunburn. Since I am a RN and the doctor who prescribed this did not take after hour calls I went to urgent care. The doc didn’t think it looked like Stephen Johnson’s syndrome. Is there a blistering rash related to Meridia? Is there any contraindication with taking Meridia and Cytomel? Meridia really didn’t curb my hunger that much just barely. I have 100 lbs. to lose. I have lost weight before (before my last 2 children on phentermine but didn’t want to be hyped up all day on it) however I really need to lose weight and have been limited with exercise due to a stress fracture of my foot. Has anyone heard of this rash with Meridia? Shouldn’t a 15 mg dose after 4 days keep me not hungry at all?
Sue
AskDocWeb: Allergic skin reactions are rare with cytomel, but they do happen.
Subj: I need some help
Date: 7/16/2007
I’m 33, 5’4″ and weigh about 260. I’m freaking out because I have never been this heavy, and I need some help. I’m, of course, worried about trying Meridia because of what I have read with side effects. I have a family history of heart problems on my dad’s side of the family and I’m not active at all. My blood pressure is only slightly high, the bottom number is usually between 90-94 instead of in the 80s. I’m afraid to see my doctor because I don’t want her to put me on high blood pressure meds. I’d rather lose the weight and bring my BP down naturally. Is Meridia really as safe as some people claim it to be? I’m so afraid of heart valve damage like what they had with Phen-fen that I’m terrified of trying Meridia. How do I know that won’t be a side effect of that, too?
Deanne
AskDocWeb: You don’t, that is one of the ways that your doctor takes care of you. She is not likely to put you on Meridia at all if you have high blood pressure. And your doctor wouldn’t prescribe a blood pressure med unless you really need it.
Subj: More energy?
Date: 8/22/2007
Does Meridia give you energy the way phentermine does?
Nikki
AskDocWeb: Yes, some have reported having more energy.
Subj: Minor side effects
Date: 8/24/2007
I felt dizzy and sick for the first 5 days of taking Meridia, these symptoms went away. I felt an increase in energy and certainly felt full sooner. I took this medication only for a month to help boost my metabolism and energy until I could get going on my own. I may have lost a few pounds, but I only have 20 or so to lose so it may not work as quickly on me. My tendency is to not eat *enough* rather than too much. The other side effect I experienced is terrible acne! Very annoying, as I am getting married in a month. This stress, I don’t need. Just having stopped this drug five days ago, I have again felt dizzy and ill since. Overall I got what I needed out of the drug, with minor unfortunate side effects.

Subj: Meridia and pregnancy
Date: 8/26/2007
Hi, I was taking meridia when I didn’t know that I’m in pregnant What can happen with my baby?
Sylwia
AskDocWeb: No one can tell for certain. Drugs in pregnancy category C are known to have caused some babies harm, but still may be needed in certain cases. Not every child whose mother takes the drug will suffer damage.
Subj: Random drug pull
Date: 9/6/2007
I am currently taking meridia, but am on a random drug pull. Will this cause a problem?
Kingfatcharlie
AskDocWeb: Meridia is not on the list for causing a false positive. As long as you have a legitimate prescription for it you should be okay.
Subj: I’m in a panic
Date: 9/7/2007
I took Merdia 15mg for 8 months and loved it. I lost 35 pounds and felt great. I just found out I’m pregnant. I stopped taking it immediately after I found out but I’m in a panic now. My husband is unaware that there is a risk to what I was taking. Please let me know what I may be dealing with.
SG
AskDocWeb: Meridia is in pregnancy category C. That means there is a possible risk but not a probable one. The likelihood of harm is small enough that some women are allowed to take the drug if it is essential to their health.
Subj: Meridia makes it much more do-able
Date: 9/25/2007
I have been taking Meridia since April ’07. I was 259 at that point and started with 10 mg. After a couple of weeks I had to go to taking it every other day because my blood pressure went slightly up. It stabilized and I continued with exercise on my treadmill and followed a 1500-1800 cal diet with 15-30 grams of fat per day. A month ago I went to 5 mg every other day. I am now at 181. I have been able to stop taking nexium, xanax, soma and several other meds. I am in great shape! My measurements were bust 57, waist 51, hips 57. They are now 43, 39, 45! I am thrilled and have had no side effects other than that one bp increase early on. I will continue to wean off and have set a goal of 150 lbs. Diet and exercise are the key, but the Meridia makes it much more do-able!

Subj: I feel no difference
Date: 10/5/2007
Just started taking meridia five days ago, I feel no difference my Dr said you’d feel full for up to 12 hours, I’ve noticed no changed except the fact that I’ve gained three pounds. I’m not a big eater but I was on zoloft and gained 22 pounds and no matter how hard I exercise I can’t get rid of it. So I thought Id try meridia and so far I’m disappointed, should you feel something right away? I know the weight wont just fall off but I was expecting the hunger pains would go away and that I would fill full. Please let me know. Thanks,
Charmin
AskDocWeb: If it is not controlling your hunger pains then you should tell your doctor, your dosage may need to be adjusted.
Subj: Strongly recommend it
Date: 10/13/2007
When I starting using meridia I was weighing 180lbs, I used it for a couple of months and lost 20 lbs. The only side effect I had was dry mouth. I strongly recommend it! It is the safest pill out there to loose weight.
Alicia
Subj: No side effects
Date: 10/15/2007
I have taken Meridia for 2 months and have lost weight really with no side effects. I want to stop taking it but am afraid of gaining the weight back. I work out everyday and eat sensibly. Will I gain my weight back by just stopping or do I have to stop slowly.
Dee
AskDocWeb: That is a question for your doctor. Some people just stop and others feel better tapering off.
Subj: Meridia symptoms
Date: 10/15/2007
Last month my doctor started me on Meridia (10mg) and after one week, I experienced the following symptoms – loss of appetite, increased appetite irritable, sleepy, agitated, dry mouth, constipation and a rash on my arms, legs and stomach. I stopped taking them and when I went back to see her I gained 1 pound. She gave me a milder dose (5mg). The first 2 weeks were ok but as last Sunday, I started getting stomach pain and abdominal cramps, nausea, joint pain mostly in my legs, nervousness, dizziness and feeling depressed lately.
Suzanne
AskDocWeb: Be sure to tell your doctor about these symptoms.
Subj: Second time?
Date: 10/26/2007
I took Meridia for a year about three years ago and lost almost 50 pounds. It decreased my appetite and after I lost the first 10 pounds, I got so excited, I started going to water aerobics and the pounds came off even faster. I kept the weight off for almost a year, but when I got divorced I turned to food once again for comfort and regained about 35 pounds. I did experience some insomnia so I took it first thing in the morning. My blood pressure never increased and the most uncomfortable side effect was the occasional light-headed feeling. I’m going to start taking it again next week and I’m praying for the same results! This time, I’m committed to lasting outcomes. Has anyone had any unfavorable results after a second time?
Laura
AskDocWeb: If it stopped working the first time then trying it again is likely to be a waste of time, otherwise it might be worthwhile.
Subj: Meridia success story
Date: 11/11/2007
I have been taking Meridia since April 07, it is now November. I have gone from 259 to my current weight of 172. I have a goal of 150 in mind. I am under a doctor’s care and weigh in frequently. I also follow a careful diet of lean meats, whole grains, no bread, lots of veggies and fruits and only water to drink and I walk for an hour on my treadmill. I just love what has happened to me. I used to have GERD, I no longer have to take Nexium for it. I have a herniated disk, but I am out of pain and able to do much more than I ever was able to do while I was so heavy. I am 42 and the only side effect I experienced was a spike in BP, when that occurred my doctor had me take my 10 mg every other day and several months ago I went to the 5 gm pill every other day. I just love what this has done for me and I think that since I have made other long-term changes to my lifestyle, this loss is sustainable. I never want to go back to the fried, fast food, eat it all lifestyle.
