Subj: Insurance companies don’t cover this medicine
Date: 6/6/2008
Last year my doctor had given me a prescription for meridia. It’s the only weight loss medication that he stated I’m can take, due to the fact I take coumandin and micardis. I only took it for two months because of the cost…approx 150.00. It’s a shame insurance companies don’t cover this medicine. Just needed to vent…thanks,

Maureen

I was wondering what milagram you should start off with Meridian? My goal is to lose 80 pounds, I am way over weight?

Maggie

AskDocWeb: That would depend on many things that could on be determined after you had a physical. In general, you would have to have a BMI over 30. You will have to contact your doctor first.

Subj: Don’t have the money
Date: 6/16/2008
I only have one pill left and don’t have the money to get anymore. I have been taking Meridia for 13 days and want to stop. Can I just quit? I am on 15 mg.

Nasir

AskDocWeb: You should get checked out by your doctor first, your blood pressure, etc. to make sure there hasn’t been any ill affects. There is also the possibility that your doctor may have free samples.

Subj: Ready to fall asleep and can’t open my eyes
Date: 6/19/2008
I am on my 3rd reductil tablet & since the 1st day I keep going through stages of getting sleepy & I can’t open my eyes. Then I snap out of it & shortly again I am ready to fall asleep. Is this normal on reductil? I read so many cases of people getting insomnia from taking reductil or struggle to sleep, so why am I having the opposite effect?

Mehila

AskDocWeb: It is not normal. In rare cases a drug may have the opposite of the intended affect, but you do not want to be having these side effects. Please consult with your physician.

Subj: This pill is amazing
Date: 6/22/2008
I took 10mg of Meridia a year ago and lost 20 pounds which I have managed to keep off. I cycled the pills, 3-4 days on and 2 days off which helped with the expense and still worked effectively. I am back on them now because my blood pressure has gone up and I need to loose more weight and WOW! How helpful is it since I’m relearning to eat a low sodium diet that I don’t have my normal carby food cravings! This pill is amazing, I only stopped due to expense but with high blood pressure we are making this expense a need now. I love it! Michelle

Subj: Absolutely loved the product
Date: 6/26/2008
I used meridia and even though everyone says that it should be taken for obese. I lost 15 pounds which I needed and only gained 10 of them back after 1 year due to no excersise and junk food. Except for dry mouth, which I experienced, I had no other side effects. Absolutely loved the product and would recommend to everyone!!!

Subj: Problems getting erection and lost my libido
Date: 7/1/2008
Hello, I lost something like 12 pounds taking meridia last year, now I’m 30 and healthy about 12 pounds overweight, due to a knee surgery. Last time I took meridia I had problems getting and erection and lost my libido completely is this normal? Thanks

Me

AskDocWeb: It is not unusual for Meridia to affect the sex drive or libido. It is one possible side affect.

Subj: Meridia helped me tremendously

Subj: I’m frustrated
Date: 7/7/2008
I have been taking Meridia for 4 weeks, just renewed the prescription this morning. Aside from the possible water weight from having my period I am not sure if Meridia is really working. At my doctors office I weighed in at 218 (I just had twins and we are trying to lose the excess pounds). She prescribed me Meridia but I waited 5 days to start it, it had to go through the insurance, My scale said I weighed 216, now well June 28 I weighed in at 210.6, so possibly a 7 pound loss, possibly a 6 pound loss, but today I weigh 213…I’m frustrated and not sure what to think, I gave myself a goal of 199 by Sept 1 when I have to go back to the doc’s, Do you think this is working?

Morgan

AskDocWeb: I hope you are aware that it is common for your weight to vary a little as you go through your cycle. It may or may not be working but it is not realistic to expect much to happen if you don’t change your eating habits and add more exercise to your daily activity.

Subj: Actively trying to get pregnant
Date: 7/8/2008
I am 34 yrs old and need to lose approx. 30lbs. Meridia has worked for me in the past, however I am actively trying to get pregnant. I’d like to take Meridia until I get pregnant then cease the medication. Is this ok, or should I refrain from taking it altogether?

Kristina

AskDocWeb: The information we have says that if you become pregnant, or plan on becoming pregnant, tell your doctor immediately.

Subj: Side effects of Meridia
Date: 7/23/2008
I started taking Meridia 10 days ago. The first few days I suffered from headaches. On the 5th day I started to itch. That went away after 2 days. Yesterday I started having muscle and joint pain. It was so bad that I couldn’t sleep. My knees, hands, wrists, and neck seem most affected. Could the muscle/joint pain be caused by the Meridia? I have also started itching again. Needless to say, I stopped taking the medication this morning in case it’s the cause. Has anyone else had symptoms like these?

Nancy

AskDocWeb: Yes, headaches, muscle and joint pain are common side effects. The itching is less common but still a side effect of Meridia.

Subj: Alot of canker sores
Date: 8/7/2008
I was on meridia (10mg) for 3 months, lost 30 lbs- felt great looked awesome—but, I had a open sore like a canker sore, on the inner labia- I am married and have had all std testing done- they couldnt find out what was wrong- I think it was because of the meridia, because I have never even heard of this happeing- I also had alot of canker sores in my mouth, they all went away when the medicine stopped.

Subj: Hungry all the time
Date: 8/8/2008
I have been on Meridia for 3 1/2 weeks. I have lost 9 lbs & I have changed my eating habits and I work out/ exercise alot…but it seems like lately I am hungry all the time. Should I up to 15mg???

Kris

AskDocWeb: If you are hungry all the time then your doctor may need to adjust your dosage.

Subj: Dry mouth and dizzy spells
Date: 8/24/2008
I have been taking Meridia for 2 months now and I love it! I have lost 20lbs and counting. The only side effects for me are dry mouth and a few dizzy spells if I turn my head too fast.

Subj: Meridia and pregnancy
Date: 9/3/2008
I’ve been taking Meridia from May, 10mg/day. yesterday, I discovered that I’m pregnant, and I’m in the 6th week of pregnancy. In the past 6 weeks, I’ve been on Meridia every day, I’m really worrying about the baby, what is the risk or side effect to my baby? People told me that the first 3 months of pregnancy is the time that grows the baby’s brian, so is this drug going to have some have some side effect to my baby and make him/her less smart? So worried. Thank you,

Cecilia

AskDocWeb: Meridia is in pregnancy category C. That means there is a possible risk but not a probable one. The likelihood of harm is small enough that some women are allowed to take the drug if it is essential to their health.

Subj: Eat sensibly
Date: 9/11/2008
I have been taking meridia only for 14 days and it seems to do the job. I now can eat one piece of chocolate and stop instead of eating the whole bar. I also am able to resist all the temptations and eat sensibly. I have lost 4 pounds so far, but have been able to do that in the past I need to get past that hurdle. Will update you in a few weeks to let you know if I got over the 5 pound hurdle.

Subj: Gas from dental procedure?
Date: 9/26/2008
I’m just starting to take Meridia. I have a dentist appointment next week. Will the gas from the dental procedure affect me in any way relating to the pill?

Lady

AskDocWeb: That is not likely as there is no warning concerning dental work with Meridia.

Subj: Wow!
Date: 10/8/2008
Started Meridia 4 weeks ago. Wow! I also started a heart healthy diet similar to weight watchers. The pounds are falling off. I am walking briskly 3 times a week for an hour. Calorie intake 1800 per day. I have dropped a total of 14 lbs! I am very optimistic and plan to lose 10 LBS per month. I even have a few glasses of wine on the weekend. Its expensive but since it works I will find other areas to cut back I’m sick of failing at weight loss. Try it.

Subj: Losing inches?
Date: 10/14/2008
I have been on meridia for 26 days. I have only lost lbs. I feel like I have lost inches maybe???. I started at 155lbs and one dau I am at 151 and others at 153. What should I do. This meds are so expensive, I don’t want to take them if they aren’t working!

Natalie

AskDocWeb: A tape measure will tell you if you are losing inches or not, go ahead and find out. If you are exercising like you should then you may be trading unhealthy fat for healthy muscle. That doesn’t show up on a scale but it is still good progress.

Subj: Cravings are now manageable
Date: 10/19/2008
I have been on Meridia for the past 7 days and have been pleased with the results. FYI I am taking no other medications and have limited my caffeine to once a day. My uncontrollable cravings are now manageable. I have to make myself eat all my food. I do get hungry but I can wait to eat and do not overeat. Before if I was really hungry I would pig out big time. Side effects: The first 2 days I felt a little jumpy but now the only side effect is a lack of sex drive. Not trying to be perverse but it takes longer now to become erect(sorry) but it also takes a heck of a lot longer to become un-erect…

Andy

Subj: My advice
Date: 10/24/2008
I have been taking Meridia for about 2 years now and started with 5mg and worked my way up to 15mg. Works great at first I lost about 50 pounds within the first few months then gained some of it back slowly. Now I am seeking alternative ways mainly because of the side effect of back pain. I have noticed some bizarre withdrawal symptoms such as feeling goose bumps when I use my back muscles. These symptoms have lasted for 2 weeks so far and is getting less and less, but very slowly. My advice is gradually quit as soon you stop losing weight, and exercise now that it is easier to do so with all that weight gone.

Kevin

Subj: 2nd time on Meridia
Date: 11/12/2008
This is my 2nd time on Meridia, I had to stop due to financial issues since most insurances do not cover it. First time I started I took 15mg and lost 50 pounds in 5 months I also excercised for 20 minutes a day 3 x a week. Now I am on 10 mg and on my 4th day. I do get a tingling scalp and sleepless nights. Kinda confused because with the 15mg I had no side effects.
