Subj: Hot all the time
Date: 6/23/2004
Started using Meridia 3 months ago in preparation for a breast reduction. Have lost 20 pounds and feel good. Only side effect seems to be that I am hot all of the time. I have three more months to go and look forward to losing at least 20 more pounds.

Subj: Awful experience
Date: 8/3/2004
I started using Meridia on June 16/04, 10 mg. I became nauseous, suffered a metallic taste in my mouth which masked any flavor, lost my appetite completely, had no energy, and developed constipation since I was eating hardly anything. I believe I lost a few pounds, but on July 30/04 stopped taking the pills. It has taken 5 days for the nausea to lessen; the metallic taste is still present. This was an awful experience.

Subj: Looking for similar problems with Meridia
Date: 12/6/2004
I am under the doctor at present as I have experienced increased pressure in my bladder area. It would appear that this medication is telling my brain that my bladder is full as well as my stomach. When I stop taking this medication it all goes back to normal, any similar problems to this would help me and my doctor to come to some diagnosis, Thanks.

Subj: Sexual side effects with Meridia
Date: 12/21/2004
I have been taking meridia for about 6 months and have lost about 30 pounds with literally no effort.. (10 mg/day) I have had 2 urinary tract infections and 1 or 2 yeast infections.. otherwise… no other problem that is listed on the site.. I do take 50 mg/day hctz, which is now effective since I lost weight… I do have one problem area that I’ve noticed since taking meridia.. I am having a difficult time achieving orgasm- both with intercourse and with masturbation- both of which are usually very effective- I am always capable of multiple orgasms.. also I’ve notice pretty severed vaginal dryness. I just had my annual gyne exam and everything is healthy. I also had my routine annual and everything is good there. About a month ago I didn’t refill my meridia prescription and went without for about 5 days. I noticed a giant resurgence of wetness, and orgasm..and HUNGER.. actually my husband noticed all the above first..:) any correlation?

Kelly

AskDocWeb: Yes, this product can cause sexual side affects.

subj: Buying from Mexico
date: 1/4/2005
i bought asenlix in mexico. They say it is the same as meridia. It comes in 30mg capsules. Does this mean 30mgs of this is the same as 30mgs of meridia. If so, this dosage seems high compared to your posts. Please help!

John

AskDocWeb: 30mgs in Mexico is the same as 30mgs in the United States BUT, their ingredients may be different and without a lab test on them there is no way to tell, be careful.

Subj: Meridia and pregnancy
Date: 1/7/2005
I am taking meridia. I had sex while I am ovulating. I have no idea if I am pregnant. Should I stop? What is the risk if I don’t?

Sheri

AskDocWeb: Meridia will not cause your child (if you are pregnant) to have any birth defects but it is not to be used while nursing. Since it sounds like you have not been using birth control, you might want to find an alternative way to lose weight. Also use a home pregnancy test. They are inexpensive and it is well worth it to know for sure.

Subj: I feel great
Date: 1/12/2005
Been on Meridia for almost 3 weeks. I feel great. I can control my eating and have options on what I eat now. Took Fentermine for 2 months and lost 17 lbs. I feel great.

Subj: Bleeding gums and Meridia?
Date: 2/20/2005
I started taking meridia about a month and a half ago. And just yesterday I went for a dental check up, just your routine cleaning. My gums will not stop bleeding. 2 days straight. I’m not sure if it’s cos of meridia, but I’ve never experienced bleeding like this before, the only thing that I know that I’ve taken was meridia. Has this happen to anyone else?? Please let me know.

Loriana

Subj: One week of Meridia
Date: 2/21/2005
Been on the 10mgs of Meridia for a week. No real side effects…but I don’t think I have lost any weight either. I figure it needs more time to work.

Kathy

AskDocWeb: Yes, it does need more time to work.

Subj: Hit a wall with Meridia
Date: 2/22/2005
I took Meridia 4 years ago – prescribed by a DR and found great success. Stopped when became too expensive. In Aug 04 I found the generic version on line, and have been taking since. I have lost 15 lbs August 04 – February, 05, and have stayed at this weight for 3 months. Have I hit a “wall” with my weight loss? Or if I stop taking it for a few weeks and begin again will it jump start the process?

Pam

AskDocWeb: Probably not. You would have a better chance getting past this if you increased your physical activity.

Subj: Combining Cyclosporine with Meridia
Date: 2/27/2005
I would like to know if there are any adverse reactions to taking cyclosporine 300 mg per day for psorisis and meridia 10 mg per day for weight loss at the same time. Thank you for your time.

Patti

AskDocWeb: There should not be a reaction to taking both medications at the same time.

Subj: Losing weight too fast
Date: 3/2/2005
I have been taken Meridia for 4 weeks now have lost 20 pounds. I was 213 and now down to 193. It is a lot of weight to lose that fast so I am raising my calorie intake to slow the weight lose down. The only two side effects that I have had is dry mouth and clothes not fitting any more. I know this drugs is not for everyone, but it is working wonders for me.

IS

AskDocWeb: You really need to talk to your doctor about this. By raising your calorie intake you are fighting the drug. Rather than doing that, ask your doctor about adjusting your dosage.

Subj: Rash on feet
Date: 4/3/2005
I’ve been using Meridia for almost a month now. At the end of the 3rd week, I developed a rash all over my toes, heel & sole of my feet. I’ve been to a dermatologist & podiatrist & they can’t seem to pinpoint exactly what’s causing this allergic reaction. I told both DR’s I’m taking Meridia, both expressed they didn’t feel it was related to Meridia. The rash is not all over my body but just on my feet. Could you please advise if this condition may be due to my taking of Meridia, and possibility even though I didn’t show symptoms until almost a month?

I’m afraid to ask my Dr, he might stop prescribing me this drug, I’ve lost over 10 lbs but want to lose more so I don’t want to stop, unless I find out it is the cause of my feet problems. Please advise. Thank you,

Maria

AskDocWeb: This doesn’t sound like it was caused by Meridia but more likely something else. Go ahead and see your doctor. It is surprising that the other doctors didn’t have an answer for you.

Subj: Stopped taking it
Date: 4/10/2005
I started taking 15mg Reductil (UK name for Meridia) 2 weeks ago. After 1 week my BP was 152/80 and after 2 it was 162/98. I asked my doctor if I should stop taking them and he said no and see him in 5 days time. That night my heart started to racing and I could not sleep. My BP was going up to 180/115. I started to get chest pains and went to A&E (Casualty/ER). They said my EKG was normal but agreed that my BP was very high. I have now stopped taking the medicine. Personally I feel it is a very dangerous medicine.

Toni

AskDocWeb Correct, especially for those who take it if they have hypertension and high blood pressure to begin with.

Subj: Zoloft and Meridia
Date: 4/13/2005
I am taking zoloft and just started taking Meridia. Is this O.K.? I have read about seritonin syndrome and am worried my dr. doesn’t know what he is doing. Is it o.k to take the 2 together?

Kiki

AskDocWeb : It depends on the dosage of each and your current medical condition. This is what you are paying your doctor to answer. You should discuss this concern with your doctor and if his answers don’t satisfy you then consider finding another doctor.

Seretonin is one of the main chemicals in your body that improves your mood. If you have too little or too much, you will have problems. Many foods (such as carbohydrates) produce seretonin. People who suffer from depression as a result of the lack of seretonin can get hooked on carbohydrate rich foods. Eating things like potato chips causes them to gain weight and of course that feeds their depression. It can become a vicious circle.

Serotonin syndrome can occur when the brain has too much serotonin and can’t cope with the excess. It is a very dangerous and a potentially fatal side effect of serotonergic enhancing drugs which can have both psychiatric and physical symptoms.

Serotonin syndrome most commonly develops when a patient receives two or more drugs that increase brain serotonin levels by different mechanisms. It may also develop after an overdose or therapeutic use of substances that increase serotonin activity in the brain. Any two serotonin uptake inhibitors taken together can cause problems. Unfortunately there is no test that confirms the diagnosis of serotonin syndrome.

Subj: Fear of fatal side effect
Date: 4/18/2005
I have been on Meridia for 3 & 1/2 months and lost 12 lbs. I am on the 15mg – I am 36yrs old and was getting mid 30’s acne and since I have been on this, it has disappeared and my ulcur Colitis is also no longer flaring up. This is great but I have had some side effects, still have constipation. I still do get cravings the week before my period but not as strong. I am feeling that I am not responding to the pill as well anymore but I feel good and I wonder what will happen to my acne and Colitis once I go off of the weight loss pill. Has anyone else gone through these changes? My fear is what if I get a fatal side effect that may seriously hurt me. Please respond.

Penny

AskDocWeb While on Meridia you should be having normal bowel movements. In the pamphlet that came with Meridia, it is only meant for short term use and in the 3 1/2 months that you’ve been on it you should have lost more than 12 lbs. Please discuss your problems with your physician who prescribed the Meridia.

Subj: Meridia and panic attacks
Date: 4/19/2005
I have a 30 pound weight gain from being on zoloft/paxil(panic attacks) and thyroid meds.(to reduce nodules). Have discontinued all since Nov-04, but still struggle with the weight. Meridia sounds like the help I need, but I was also hoping that because of its connection to the seratonin re-uptake, if this would also benefit me with regards to panic attacks.

Barbara

AskDocWeb Meridia will not help you with panic attacks, sorry.
