Subj: Bad experience with Meridia
Date: 6/21/2005
I also felt exactly that way but didn’t put two and two together, I thought I was going crazy. Dizzy and couldn’t walk straight and spacey. Let me warn you, if you feel “out of it” DO NOT drink alcohol! I had a bad experience and freaked out after drinking on meridia.

Subj: Asenlix
Date: 6/27/2005
I am thinking of ordering Asenlix and would like some information about side effects and exactly who should be using this diet pill. I need to loose 25-30 lbs to be at normal range for my build. Can you email me some information please? Thank you,

Monica

AskDocWeb: Sorry Monica, we post answers here on these pages but don’t have time for private emails.

Subj: Lower my cholesterol
Date: 6/27/2005
I have cholesterol reading off 6.2 my GP prescribed lipitor 10mg went down to 4.3 only problem my ck more than doubled had to be taken off lipitor I exercise regularly I’m about 20 pounds over my ideal weight I take celexa 10mg do you think meridia would help lower my cholesterol?

Mal

AskDocWeb: Maybe, losing weight by itself seems to lower cholesterol and so does exercise.

Subj: Drinking alcohol and Meridia
Date: 7/5/2005
I have been taking Meridia 10mg for about 6 days now. I have not been thinking about food 24/7 as I was before. I sometimes have felt as if I was having heart palpitations but not to any extreme. I was wondering if any of you experienced an allergic like reaction while drinking alcohol while using meridia. I was having a margarita the other night and that evening I was so sick so I am not sure if it was something I ate or if it was the medication reacting with the alcohol. Anyone with something similar?

Subj: Blood pressure and Meridia
Date: 7/6/2005
I have taken meridia for 4 months, blood pressure before was 120/70 then was 150/105 after 3 days off medicine is at 145/90 – How long will it take for my blood pressure to go back to normal and do I need to see a doctor now or wait?

Reese

AskDocWeb: Since your blood pressure seems to be going down you should be okay but, keep an eye on it. If it isn’t back to normal in after 14 days then yes, do see your physician.

Subj: Scared of taking Meridia
Date: 7/9/2005
My doctor prescribed Meridia for me but I am very scared to start taking it. Some of the articles I have read, talk about possible problems with the heart. Even though I have no problems, my mother had a heart attack at the age of 37 and many problems since then. I was wondering if that ups my chance of having problems on this pill? I’ve been trying to figure out if its better to be over weight or to go on Meridia and lose the weight. I’ve tried everything up to now to lose. Please help!

Jackie

AskDocWeb: If you have tried everything to lose weight then you probably need something extra to help. Meridia is one way to get that extra help. And it sounds like your doctor thinks that there is more danger in being overweight than there is in taking Meridia.
Another way to get extra help is to seek the advice of a Nutrition Consultant such as you find at your local hospital. She(or he) will put you on a plan that will work for you and decrease the chances of Meridia affecting your health.

Subj: Lost 40 pounds so far
Date: 7/25/2005
I have been taking meridia for 5 months now, and have had absolutely no side effects. I have lost 40 pounds so far and am continuing to lose. I do however go to the doctor every month to have my blood pressure taken and weight done. I have heard all about the side effects and instead of panicing, I am just making sure that my doctor is watching me very closely for any side effects.

Sarah

Subj: Meridia works but with side effects
Date: 7/27/2005
I have been taking Meridia for three weeks and today is the first day I feel weak and achey on it. For the most part it completely makes me not hungry and when I do eat, I notice I am so full with just a couple of bites. Side effects I have are dry mouth, energy, anxiousness, some irritable symptoms only when I have not eaten for the day. It makes you not want to eat, but when you don’t eat, you will feel the symptoms more. Before taking Meridia, I had cravings for alcohol and sugar in the evening, but now I don’t even want it; which is a great thing.

Subj: Meridia and irregular period
Date: 7/29/2005
I have been taking Reductil 15mg for approx. 6 weeks. They are fab with no side effects and I have lost 12lbs. Wasn’t much overweight, so am now 9’12”. However my periods which are always very regular is currently late. Do these tablets cause this? I am not pregnant as was sterilized 10 years ago.

Dawn

AskDocWeb: Yes, Meridia can cause problems with you mensis.

Subj: Great results with Meridia
Date: 7/30/2005
I have taken meridia in the past and have great results with it, but 3 children later I would like to try again. It is very expensive and I was wondering if it is truly safe to order it on line?

Kaye

AskDocWeb: Like most things, it is safe as long as you take reasonable precautions. If you order from a legitimate pharmacy you should be okay.

Subj: Meridia and pregnancy?
Date: 8/20/2005
I have been using meridia for 2 months now and have just learnt that I am pregnant. I will immediately stop taking the meds and estimate I am about 2 weeks pregnant. Could there possibly be any damage done?

Jenni

AskDocWeb: Meridia is rated in the “C” category of risk. That means you should check with your doctor before discontinuing it. Its risks may be low enough, and its benefits sufficiently high, to make its continued use the wisest course of action.

Subj: Lost 17 pounds
Date: 9/5/2005
I have been taking Meridia for 2 months and have lost 17 pounds. Right on target! I still have 60 to go. My concern is that I have been so agitated since I have been on this medication. Should I decrease to 5 mg? I had previously been taking Zoloft for PMS and depression. My MD thought that I could get away with the antidepressent effects of Meridia rather than taking both. But I am concerned with how angry/depressed/snappy I have been since starting the Meridia and discontinuing the Zoloft. Suggestions?

Mary

AskDocWeb: On the one hand, you may be able to reduce your dosage and still get good results so talk to your doctor about this. On the other hand, if you can increase your regular, daily physical activity you may be able to put that excess energy to work for you.

Subj: Increased anxiety
Date: 9/5/2005
I was prescribed Reductil by my DR after failing every effort to lose weight following second child. Worked well, but suffer anxiety and after family crisis had to go on Zoloft. Since then, wish to lose last 10 pounds of baby weight, but find that stopping Zoloft and starting Reductil increases anxiety. Anything I can take or do to allow me a couple of months on Reductil without being so stressed?

V

AskDocWeb: The best thing we can think of to help with anxiety is to increase your overall daily physical activity, dance, jog, walk, go bowling, play tennis, swim with kids, volunteer to help with children’s activities, school projects, Red Cross projects, the list is endless. The idea is to put your energy to good use so you can experience being tired in a satisfied way at the end of your day. This will do a great deal to reduce anxiety.

Subj: Meridia weight loss pill
Date: 9/11/2005
I started taking Meridia 14 days ago at a 10mg dose. I have had no adverse side effects and it has been incredibly helpful in curbing my appetite and cravings. I feel great! My frustration is that even though I have significantly reduced my caloric intake, as well as increased my physical activity, I have seen almost no movement on the scale (2 lbs.). Is my body in “starvation mode” and holding on to everything? What is a reasonable amount of time to see results?

Khinzy

AskDocWeb: You should have seen results by now. This drug may not be working for you as it does others. Sounds like it may be time to try another method.

Subj: Meridia, esophagitis and gastritis?
Date: 9/13/2005
I stopped Meridia abruptly about two weeks ago because I was having erratic blood pressure and heart rates. I was checked into the hospital during this time and all heart and lung tests came out normal. An endoscopy was done and lacerations in my esophagus (esophagitis) and stomach and small intestines (gastritis), were found. Is there any relation between Meridia and esophagitis and gastritis? Also, how long does meridia stay in your system? Thanks.

Shivaun

AskDocWeb: Meridia commonly causes acid indigestion. Gastritis is less common but still attributed to this drug.

Subj: Black stool
Date: 9/23/2005
Started taking Meridia last week. I now have black stool. I take Allergy pills, Effexor, Torisimide, celebrex, vytorin, potassium.
My first day, I had some beer, not usually a drinker. Threw up (nothing in my stomach, 5 days ago, drank a bottle of Pepto bismo, (know this can cause your stool to turn black, but this is almost 6 days later. Problems with medications mixing??? Hoping I do not have a bleeding ulcer, never had this before.

Jane

AskDocWeb: Well, drinking an entire bottle of Pepto didn’t help you. Make an appointment with your physician to discuss this problem and he may have you see a specialist if your problem doesn’t resolve itself.

Subj: Meridia and no sex drive
Date: 10/7/2005
My girlfriend started taking this pill about 4-5 weeks ago, she was 5ft, 110lbs so I don’t think she was even a candidate but somehow the doctor prescribed it. Lately she has been very distant complaining that she has no sex drive and is not even interested in sex anymore, could this be a side effect of the drug?

John

AskDocWeb: Yes, Meridia may affect her sex drive or libido. If her BMI (Body Mass Index) were over 30 then she would be a candidate for a weight loss medication. But with a BMI of 21, she is not even close, which makes this a drug abuse problem. You might try walking with her for 30 minutes, three times a week. This will do a lot to make her be pleasant to be with.
