Subj: Mood enhancing qualities
Date: 10/26/2004
I have been going through a painful separation/divorce with my husband for the last 3 months and have of course been depressed, had mood swings, etc. My doctor put me on Meridia a week ago and I’ve noticed that I’m not as depressed, more even-keeled. I searched the Web and prescription label but didn’t see anything about mood enhancing qualities or anti-anxiety qualities. Is this my imagination or could Meridia be helping my depression/mood?
Penni
AskDocWeb: Although Meridia is a weight loss drug and not an anti-depressant, the stimulating affects may be experienced as excitement, restlessness, anxiety, or even agitation.
Subj: Meridia side effects
Date: 11/11/2005
I have used Meridia successfully a few years ago and have recently (due to a thyroid problem) have gone back to taking it. It has always been very effective for me in weight loss which of course resulted in more energy and feeling better. However, last night and this is the first time this ever happened, I completely flipped out over something rather miniscule. It scared the heck out of my family. Even after I screamed and carried on, I wondered to myself “where did that come from”. Is it possible that the Meridia could have caused that. I just want to be careful and obviously don’t want to put any aspect of my health at risk by continuing with this medication if I shouldn’t.
TINA
AskDocWeb: Yes, others have reported the same problem with Meridia, even depression and anxiety, which could lead to your anger.

I and am taking Nuerontin and Wellbutrin. Is Meridia an option for me?
Jacki
AskDocWeb: If you were just on Wellbutrin, you could, but we question the Neurontin. Discuss this with your physician, he knows your complete medical history.
Subj: Asenlix or Meridia?
Date: 11/30/2005
What is the difference between Asenlix and Meridia? Asenlix works great for me and I just heard of Meridia? Trying to decide if I should try it or stick to asenlix.
Krystal
AskDocWeb: Although Asenlix may be working for you it is not recommeded. It has been removed from the market in Europe and the USA because of the negative side effects.
Subj: Side effect or flu?
Date: 12/5/2005
After only 3 pills of 15 mg I felt like I had the flu. How do I know if this is a side effect or really the flu. If it is a side effect will it quit in time?
Anitta
AskDocWeb: Nausea is a common side effect of Meridia which could mimic flu symptoms.
Subj: Generic equivalent?
Date: 12/23/2005
My husband is taking meridia. I notice that many of the people leaving comments are taking a generic form which is no doubt cheaper. Where can we find a genuine cheaper generic equivalent on line? No doubt many scammers are out there offering a so-called “generic” equivalent.
Francesca
AskDocWeb: Too true, there are too many scammers online to make any recommendation here.
Subj: Reductil
Date: 12/30/2005
Hello, I have been taking 15mg of reductil now for about three months but the effects of it seem to have worn off is it possible for the dosage to be increased. I have had no problems with high blood pressure.
J
AskDocWeb: Increasing your dosage is something that you will need to discuss with your physician.
Subj: Loss only 5 pounds on Meridia
Date: 1/1/2006
I started taking meridia about two months ago and am on weight watchers, but I’ve only lost about 5 pounds – what is the average weight loss? Does it take time for the medicine to work to its full effect?
Jen
AskDocWeb: Yes, it does take time but most people loose 4 or more pounds in the first 4 weeks. It sounds like you may have to do something in addition to taking the pills, like increase your physical activity. Try taking a daily 20 minute walk and stick with the weight watchers, it’s a good company.
Subj: Just started Meridia
Date: 1/7/2006
I just started taking Meridia 10mg, and so far I’m fine. I’m worried though, b/c everyone tells me I’ll immediately gain it back because it messes with your metabolism. I argue that if you continue healthy eating and activity, you should not gain it back. Will this drug mess up my metabolism when I stop taking it?
Shannon
AskDocWeb: If you continue healthy eating and a healthy level of activity you should be fine.
Subj: Eye bags
Date: 1/8/2006
Can eye bags go away after taking allergy medication?. I found out that my cat was making me have allergy reactions (itchy eyes/nose trouble breathing/fatigue and also noticed to have bags under my eyes).
Fernando
AskDocWeb: Pet dander is a common cause of eye bags. And yes, allergy medication will help reduce the bags beneath your eyes.
Subj: Weaning off Meridia
Date: 1/10/2006
Well, let’s see, I’ve been on Meridia for over a year now, and have lost 96 pounds (I’m 5’10 and large boned). I was started at 15 mg and remained on that dose until about 2 months ago, when I (on my own) started taking it every other day (I thought I’d wean start weaning myself off of it slowly). Well, now, at my request, I’m on 5mg (for the last week 1/2) and am continually nauseous. I had no instances of this at 15mg. Could the lowered dose be the cause of this? Should I go to 10mg daily instead? Also, could the lowered dose cause me to lose less weight, or stop all together? I do exercise, and practice portion control, but I have about 40 more to lose. The nausea, though, is the main issue at the moment…Thanks!
Stephanie
AskDocWeb: You should feel free to talk this over with your doctor. Explain what you want to accomplish and what you might do about the nausea.
Subj: Drug interactions?
Date: 1/20/2006
I am 40 years old and just started taking Meridia 10mg this week for excessive weight gain due to Hypothyroid which went untreated for 2 years. I have weighted 125lb all my adult life and when I turned 35 I begin to have unexplained weight gain. On average I gained about 25lbs every 6-8weeks with no change in appetite and I was completed drained physically to the point of hiring a housekeeper/nanny. I sought medical care immediately, I was terrified by the thought of having a terminal illness. Unfortunately, the only care available to me was an USAF Flight Doctor(not board certified)and he insisted I was eating too much and needed to exercise more. He ordered bloodwork and the results indicated a slight problem with the levels of my thyroid but not enough to be treated. I continued to seek medical care for the next 18 months. Then we moved to another state/military base where I immediately went to a new group of Military Doctors. Within 1 week of my new bloodwork being reviewed I was diagnosed with Hypothyroid and was give Synthyroid. I was also informed that the very first panel of bloodwork from 18 months ago clearly showed a thyroid problem, which should have been treated. The levels of the Synthroid have been increased 3 times over the past 2 years and I am still gaining weight. My next panel of bloodwork will be taken next week and I am assuming there will be another increase in my medication. To date, I have gained a total of 125lbs in 3 years. I also suffer from severe Fibromyalgia which is an other nightmare I will not go into at this time other than to list the medications I am currently taking for treatment. I take the following daily: 150mg of Ultram, Motrin 600mg, Flexeril 20mg and 50-100mg of Elavil(as needed at bedtime for chronic insomnia). Finally my question and concern, I currently take 1 capsule(not the recommended dose of 3 gel caps) of an over-the-counter energy supplement daily, VPX Redline powered by Evoburn & cAMP. I tried taking two gel caps and broke into a sweat and felt like I was going jump out of my skin. I feel fine taking just 1 capsule after breakfast, should I be concerned about taking the Meridia with the energy supplement? I had much more energy and could focus better when I was taking Phentermine but no weight-loss. I do hope this is enough information to address my drug interaction concerns. Thank you very much for your time and help.
Sincerely,
J
AskDocWeb: We question the wisdom of taking the OTC energy supplement at all since you are having a thyroid problem right now. It would be a good idea to tell your doctor about everything you are taking, including the VPX Redline (with which we are not familiar). There could be an interaction with your supplements and your meds. Talk to your doctor about the use of supplements with your thyroid medication. Meridia does cause anxiety, insomnia, and joint pain. And usually it’s a bad idea to mix stimulants with Meridia.
Subj: Getting results
Date: 1/31/2006
I am 45 years old and about 30 lbs over weight. Started Meridia two weeks ago, experiencing headaches and feel a bit dizzy, my blood pressure is controlled by meds ands so far has not gone up. I do not have an appetite nor crave and have lost 4 lbs, I am also exercising. I do experience sleep disturbances but feel I am settling into the drug better now…

Subj: Gained weight on Meridia
Date: 2/1/2006
I have been taking Meridia (10 mg) for almost 3 months. In the beginning I was also taking Zoloft, but have since stopped taking it. I’ve not lost any weight on Meridia, in fact I’ve gained weight on it. I am 5’6″ tall and weigh 145 lbs. I only want to lose 15ish lbs, what are your thoughts?
Lisa
AskDocWeb: If you gained weight while taking Meridia then it is obviously a waste of your time to continue. You have to understand that just taking a pill won’t make you lose weight. You have to change your eating habits and add exercise.
Subj: Meridia side effects
Date: 2/1/2006
I have been taking Meridia for about 2 months now and have noticed moodiness and depression. I have never had a depression problem in the past. I have not had a traumatic event or any real reason to be depressed. I have not lost any weight either – although I talked my doctor into prescribing it to me to control my appetite during the holidays. I’m not overweight but would like to lose about 10 pounds. I’m also taking Allegra and Nasonex on a daily basis. Could Merida be causing my depression and anxiety? Is there another diet pill that you would recommend to suppress my appetite?
Evelyn
AskDocWeb: Yes, about four percent of Meridia users have both depression and anxiety. We would not recommend any diet pill to just lose a couple of pounds.
Subj: Recommended
Date: 2/7/2006
I’ve been on Meridia for around three weeks now and have lost 5 pounds. I noticed the difference the first day, and so far so good. I was very apprehensive about trying it, but now I’m really glad I did. I have more energy and feel really good about myself. Another great thing is I’m not obsessed with food anymore; the urge to binge is gone. I have about 30 more pounds to go, and now I finally think I can do it. I’d recommend Meridia to anyone.
